Prostitution: The Oldest Trade on National Geographic on Thursday

13 posts in this topic

Have you seen the documentary about prostitution on National Geographic last Thursday?

This documentary was all about the advantages and disadvantages of the oldest trade.

It features escorts and brothels in Australia, a man called Asta Philpot who is disabled went to a brothel in the Netherlands, prostitution in Bangladesh, street girls in the USA and Big Sister brothel in the Czech Republic.

What do you think about the documentary?

I've just finished watching it.

To be honest quite a balanced programme.

It seemed to highlight all points of view. Although that Australian shrink or whatever she was, was getting on my nerves.

It does seem that Australia is the way to go.

My heart broke when watching the Bangladesh segment.

The segment on the USA just left me confused. How can a country so is "supposed" to be "land of the free" inflict laws that punish and endanger their fellow citizens? By making laws on prostitution more tougher they are making the situation worse?

I watched it thought it was really good. What do you think about the parlour that videoed the rooms live, making punters sign a consent form first, this is so people to log on and watch over the internet :D

I watched a documentary at the start of the year about a parlour in Prague where the punters didn't even have to pay - or only paid a house fee - as long as they agreed for their session to be streamed over the net!!!

I just watched this and thought it was quite interesting, and it certainly was more balanced than a lot of media coverage the industry gets. At least it made a clear distinction between high end escorts and street workers, and also had some interesting interviews from both ends of the spectrum.

Having said that, I did feel that they played down the positives though. Whenever the narrator refereed to the positive comments from the high end Australian escort he used phrases along the lines of "some escorts claim they enjoy it"... but there was no such ambiguity when referring to the negative comments from others.

I saw the bit about Leeds-based disabled chap called Asta Philpot, who went to the Netherlands to see a prostitute.

He's one of the 6 million people have disabilities whether it is physical, learning or people with wheelchairs.

Surely the oldest profession must be the one that paid for the sex?

Interesting program, showed both good and bad sides of prostitution, not just the bad side that is usually shown.

Don't think the disabled lad needed to go to Holland though. Possibly just for the program, as there are plenty of places in the UK he could have went.

Sorry to bring this thread back to the top but I've only just seen the programme having recorded it on the repeat showing last Saturday.

I was impressed with this woman who seemed to favour decriminalisation.

She's the kind of outreach worker we need in this country.

I wasn't too pleased with Bindel's friend Sheila Jeffreys.

She was such an extreme radfem she even thought the disabled man who looked like he had virtually no use of his arms and legs was abusing the lady from Ria's in Amsterdam just by seeing her for a service.

Big Sister in Prague looked like an interesting concept.

Free sex for the punter in exchange for being filmed shagging the woman on a webcam, and the session going out live on an internet pay site. Not my bag as I like discretion, but good for any punter who wouldn't mind that sort of thing.
