Punting pre-Punternet?

23 posts in this topic

First off, apologies if this has been asked before - i did a quick search and brought nothing, but i'd be amazed if this topic has not been aired already....

What was the punting world like before the internet and Punternet? At the start of my on-and-off punting career (ca. 1992-3) I either went to a RLD (first time was a BJ in Amsterdam by a v. pretty blonde Dutch student) or relied on phone booth cards.

I am aware there were (and still are) ads in local/free newspapers, corner store windows etc. - but where did punters find new WGs and WGs attract new punters outside of this, without the aid of the internet? Word of mouth? Did punters have some kind of "club"? It was also pre-mobile phones, so there must have been phone numbers and addresses scribbled on scraps of paper for punters to get to the ladies.

I'd love to hear from "seasoned" punters and ladies who have been around the scene before the 90s.

Ah, pre-internet. Wistful nostalgia. Usuals for spontaneous were Soho walk-ups, parlours and phone ads. Don't think ever used newspaper small ads. For agencies - usually higher class - Yellow Pages (anyone else remember when YP had escort ads?). There were also some contact mags that had wg listings.

Was a very early adopter of internet (1990) and as everyone knows that changed everything. Despite photoshopping and still existent problems of bait-and-switch, you're more likely to get what you see. Before, really was shooting in barrel, unless you saw an agency's books. Yes, agencies had a folder of pictures to peruse. How quaint.

Worked abroad in US a lot, and found the phone directory agencies usually very reliable. If anything, I think the internet changed things for the worse. I suspect the agencies/madams prided themselves on service and class. The internet opened up the market to all kinds of schemers and chancers.

The biggest single resource was The Sport. It had over a page of Escorts and Masage small ads. Very hit and miss; probably 50% dismal, 40% OK shag, and 10% brilliant.

One NE agency that advertised in Sport c1990 is still going and is among the best. A couple of the Escort agency ads started to include url about 1998 by 1999 I was totally internet hunting.

The Raymond mags also had small ads. Most seemed either dodgy or expensive (one phone no was had "college girl needs spanking" for over 10 years - must have finished the PhD by now!). But I also clocked a local Newcastle no in Men Only and found a reg who lasted about 5 years!

Nice info so far! I was also wondering about areas outside big cities - were parlours also to be found in other parts of the country and how did one get to find them? Presumably there wasn't a big sign above the door... I guess saunas were more plentiful too but without much knowledge could have been quite frustrating at times!

I meant to add this for the ladies to answer: has Punter supply increased dramatically since the Internet? Presumably most were regulars Back then?

Streetwalkers - everywhere in all the major cities and towns once you knew where to look - railway staions often.

My best was picking up a WG outside the main gates of Cheltenham Ladies College - but she was not a pupil nor a school mistress!

Punting as it is now called, years ago whoring, was much more fun before this site, it was exciting to visit a Massage Parlour and probably meet a really attractive next door type of girl who allowed you to play, followed by a good hand job and in some parlours a blow job. Oh happy days of innocence and fun. Today it is crude, overt and disappointing. Glad I am past all that, todays scene doesn't appeal.

I had my first punt around the same time as you - that was a Soho walk-up. Otherwise, yes, it was just a case of looking at the small ads in the local free papers. I was lucky to find a regular woman in Soho, as I didn't have internet myself until I moved a few years later.

The internet, in particular the World Sex Guide and then Punternet, made a huge difference. No idea how I'd have found some parlours and independents without it!

A strange post. You are passed all this crude punting malarky yet are a member on this board?

IF anything I would have thought things have changed for the better. WGs are more accessible and there is much more variety. With the internet you can pick and choose like you're in a sweet shop whereas before you don't know what the girl is like until you turn up. Surely being able to minimise the risk of a poor punt is a good thing?

I guess you enjoyed it more beforehand because you were younger and you don't like to move with the times.

coinz is punternet's little ray of sunshine. I always have a mental image of Marvin the Paranoid Android typing his posts :D. I am sure he has been around a lot longer than 33 posts though .

You know, no matter what the tech, we will always find a WG, or she will find us. I have been punting since mid 1960's and never had a problem finding lovely ladies.

There were always the walk-ups, but a lot more street girls in many different venues. I would never have one now, but I always found it so exciting approacking a woman in the street to ask if she was doing business.

Before Punternet, does anyone remember Deja Vue online? It was similar but nowhere near as good or organised as punternet.

I lived abroad at times and in one city girls worked out of cars, patrolling the streets. You hailed them like a cab and had a chat through the window and if a deal was done you would get in and go to her flat.

In Paris once (not so long ago) I found a place near a park (Vincennes???) where the girls work out of campervans. they had candles in the vans to save their batteries. I got a good service for 20 euros. I rocked.

But there always were publications and blokes like us always knew where to find the girls.

Those days were "interesting", abroad was easy as Maisons Privee abounded in most foreign cities, major street scene, and most large hotels had their resident bar girls.

In the UK it was mainly the street scene and large hotel bars for those not connected and sometimes the small ads in the back of top shelf mags.

In those days an enquiry to the concierge for "an extra blanket" normally achived the desired result but it was always "blind".

i understand what you mean coinz - and the wealth of information available these days has kind of spoilt the "exciting" aspect of seeking out and appreciating the services of a WG.

Au contraire, I prefer the ease of selection and connection nowadays and also the legality of it all.

My early punting career was guided by the large number of cards in phone boxes that were to be found in Central London - some of the boxes were practically plastered on all 4 sides from top to bottom with cards. They started as just a few words plus telephone number, and then graduated to b/w and then colour pics.

I'm not sure given the amount of info on the internet (and given I no longer work in London) whether or not the card phenomenon has persisted - but I would guess not.

I have to say I did strike gold a few times with the cards (an Aussie blonde off of Regent Street and Honey near London Bridge spring especially to mind from the early 1990s!) and I agree with another of the comments here about the wealth of info kind of spoiling the excitement and anticipation of heading into the unknown!

I think Coinz and those who agree with him about the good old days are repeating the mistakes of many older people before them and remembering the good things of the past but forgetting the bad.I make a point of not owning rose tinted spectacles.

Admittedly the excitement of not knowing what exactly was going to happen or even what the girl was like could be immense. I remember finding a girl called daisy at the thai sauna in Tottenham that was so beautiful I was amazed. When she proceeded to give me a wonderful session the elation was so powerful it hurt.

But this was rare. More often the women were uninterested or plain or poor providers of any sexual service. Deep kissing was unusual as was oral without. They knew that market forces were on their side as there was no effective advertising nor any way of comparing products.

When you found a good girl you stuck with them so you might as well have been in a relationship with them.

Since punternet in particular and the internet in general I believe punting has improved drastically. So much more choice, better looking women, much better service and a greater variety of services easily available.

I agree up to a point. Easy to be nostalgic and rose-tinted, but no hiding from fact that thrill of unknown was palpable. I think converse and downside to internet is that because seen photos builds up a huge and sometimes self-defeating expectation. I agree that when found someone good tended to see again, but that's same as post-internet. And ultimately could never be faithful, to partners or wgs. I think the real negative to the internet as mentioned before is that it's perhaps taken some of the high-class ethos out of market, and - ironically - because it makes available to everyone, it's made punting rather mundane rather than the furtive cloak-and-dagger affair it was previously. I wonder how many guys punt now who wouldn't have before the internet?

I don't view the pre-punternet era with rose-tinted spectacles - it was so difficult to find good punts. Cards in London phone boxes and small ads in the paper and the Sport were my main sources but were incredibly hit and miss - there was no real way to find out who was good and bad without trying them.

Things improved for me when I got a copy of the McCoys guide which before punternet was the only independent source of info. Far from perfect and it rapidly went out of date especially for indies, but it was a big step forward for me.

And personally I'm quite happy to do without the thrill of the unknown - never forget one occasion when the WG came to the door and I thought she must be the maid because she was about twice the age of the girl described on the phone, but no. I made my excuses and left.

All in all, for me there's no contest and punternet/the internet in general is the best thing that's happened to punting IMO.

PunterNet is a valuable source of information.

I doubt that I would have ever punted without it and missed out on a lot of fun.

Where else would you get advice from both Service Providers and experienced Service Users on increasing the success of a visit ?
