A Million Pounds A Year

8 posts in this topic

A man made £5.7m from running brothels which he used to pay for a luxury lifestyle, a court heard.

Ian Barnett, 59, lived in a £500,000 house on Ingledene Avenue in Prestwich with his wife Michelle. He drove a Rolls Royce with a private registration valued at up to £40,000 and she drove a £20,000 X-type Jaguar.

Barnett ran brothels on Shudehill in the city centre, on Cheetham Hill Road, on Stockport Road in Levenshulme and also on Sinderland Road in Altrincham.

He was given a three-year jail sentence in 2008 after he admitted keeping a string of brothels, controlling prostitution and conspiracy to control brothels. Now out of prison having served half his sentence, Barnett, of St Annes Road, Prestwich, has been hauled back before the courts where prosecutors are trying to claw back his ill-gotten gains.

Representing himself, Barnett is contesting the application made under the Proceeds Of Crime Act at Manchester Crown Court.

Det Con John Turner, of the financial investigation unit of Greater Manchester Police, used 'job sheets' found at three of the four brothels to estimate how much each one brought in every month.

The job sheets showed, for instance, that clients would be charged £40 for an hour, with £25 going to the prostitute and the remainder to Barnett, the court heard.

Barnett's 'benefits', or the total sum paid over to the brothels, was worked out as £5,672,649 over six years. His wife, Michelle Barnett, 58, who was handed a suspended prison sentence in 2008 for money laundering in connection with her husband's racket, had her 'benefits' estimated at £560,768, the court heard.

Det Con Turner said that although the Ingledene Road property was registered to Michelle Barnett, it was the matrimonial home and had also been used as an office for the brothels business.

Asked about the registration of a car and property to Michelle Barnett, DC Turner added: "This is a tactic often employed by people to hide their own assets."

Staggering

He added: "Criminals often put their assets into other people's names. The person out of Mr and Mrs Barnett who earned the most money, I have deduced from my analysis, was Mr Barnett. It was a quite staggering amount of money coming into those brothels and it is my belief he has used that money to buy the assets and that the assets had been placed into Mrs Barnett's name to disguise them for convenience and for their own ends."

In court Barnett's previous conviction was mentioned from 2005 when he was given an eight month suspended prison sentence for living off immoral earnings.

In the latest court proceedings Barnett told the judge he had only pleaded guilty in 2008 because he was "ill on the day" and had an application to delay the hearing turned down. He argued his actual benefits was £21,000, the cash seized from him at the outset of the police investigation.

Giving evidence from the witness stand, Barnett repeatedly criticised the police investigation and insisted he had been a victim of an abuse of the judicial process.

He questioned Judge David Hernandez, saying: "You have been a judge for what?" A year?"

The Judge responded: "I have told you, that line of argument does not assist you."

The case continues.

Whatever he may think of the Judge (even a circuit judge) this is a tactic unlikely to help his case!

At those prices the places were probably stocked full of clients from opening to closing time, thats if they had a closing time.

the places were part of the "hotspots" chain in the manchester area, and as most punters in the NW know they were best left well alone.

shitholes is being kind to them !! i dont think they were ever full even if they were giving it away...
