Protecting Punter Privacy

24 posts in this topic

I have a query and I would appreciate an informed view.

I usually require my initial enquiries to be made of the lady by email and I usually send my query through my 'punting' email address..Mostly, the ladies are happy enough to provide their nominated email address for this purpose but for some reason others will only provide an email/message type facility on their site , a sort of form or set of boxes which the punter can type into and the girl will then respond to the furnished punters email address in due course. I am nervous of this as I do not know what personal , if any, details the ladies sees when she sees my communication to her through this system. What does she actually see ? Are there any privacy risks for me ?

I think that it depends on the site. Some will add the IP address as well as the information that you provide, including your punting email address, nominated name and message.

I reported someone to HMRC for tax-evasion using the online reporting facility. I rang them to ascertain whether the default email address on my computer (ie my real name) would be revealed. They assured me that it wouldn't. Nevertheless I still did it using an internet cafe.

Any site can theoretically collect your IP address, ISP, very rough geographical location, your OS and browser.

That you did it at all says something about your own view of privacy and confidentiality. Remind me not to share a confidence with you.

It wasn't an escort or somebody who could expect privacy or confidentiality from me. It was a well-known villain with a criminal record who had acquired a lot of money from fraudulent activities, including cheating OAP's, registered charities and just about everybody else. I would do the same tomorrow. In fact I would do the same this afternoon.

I've also reported people for suspected money laundering, as is my duty.

If you don't want to share a confidence with me, then don't. I don't blame you. I wouldn't either, but it doesn't stop me sleeping at night.

Well, I don't recall seeing many Privacy Statements or policies on escort websites or any reference to the Data Protection Act... At best, you can probably hope that when the lady says something along the lines of she is very discrete and expects discretion from you, that she won't be flogging your email address or personal details to all and sundry ;)

The IP address can reveal the user's ISP and approximate geographical location, this could be as close as a few miles or it could be the other side of the country, depending on the network to the ISP nearest node. The details of the user cannot be determined, however they would be known to the ISP but can only be divulged to the authorities under some kind of warrant.

IP addresses can be either :

static, meaning you will always have the same one, typically on a company network, so if you were using a work computer, a Whois or similar lookup could reveal something like : "ABC Shipping Ltd, Newcastle on Tyne". The company's network administrator would be able to narrow this down to a single machine on the network.

or :

dynamic, drawn from a pool allocated to an ISP, meaning they change from time to time, typically if you restart your router, for example. This would not hide your identity, but you could log on today with IP address 123.456.789 and tomorrow with 123.555.888. A lookup would show that both IPs (these are fictitious) belong to ZZZ Telecom but may or may not be the same user.

I have been told, but have not verified, that if you use a 'dongle' this has a number allocated as a mobile phone number and that this number can be shown in an IP trace in message headers. If the dongle was registered to Jo Bloggs ...... there could be implications.

They can collect no real info on you. The biggest give away to your personal info is your email address and you said you use your own "punting" address so thats the biggest info giver taken care of. Other than that your next biggest info giver is your IP address as silverado said but even then no real info can be got from it as even location info can be anywhere in the country like mine 200 miles away from where i actually live. Nothing to worry about at all really.

If this is reason for some people to prefer using a punting email address over a form on a site you should also be aware that some e-mail providers include your IP address (which leads to your ISP/rough location) that you're on at the time of sending in your e-mail headers. This is not obviously displayed to the receiver but can be looked up if someone knows where to check. Gmail for instance includes this if you use IMAP (not through webmail) and I believe Yahoo even sends in when you use webmail.

If you're concerned about your IP address being traced (and with some ISPs, particularly those with a static IP or on cable you could be pinned down) use a VPN to connect to the Internet.

If you aren't doing anything wrong, why should you worry about being traced?

I have a contact form on my website, however I also provide my own email address for anyone who wishes to email me directly.

The biggest problem I find with the form is people not putting their correct email address in, using a fake email or phone number, or making typos. This is why I'm always reluctant to contact someone on a phone number they have typed as part of a booking form, or email in general. I'll always ask them since apart from it not being etiquette for me to chase clients, I have had incomplete numbers sent to me and in one case a number that didn't belong to the client -either because he'd typed a wrong digit or he was having a laugh at a mates expense.

I've also replied to typed in email addresses which bounced back as incorrect.

There has been one instance where I did pass on an IP address. This was after I recieved a very nasty email that was probably in response to thread on punternet, where the mods had already contacted me concerned for my safety. This co-incided with the horrid email and so the mods asked me for the IP to try and see if it was a poster from this forum.

Since IPs can't actually ID anyone unless someone like the police get involved, there would have been no harm done and I think the information I shared was warranted without putting anyone's actual personal status at risk.

This is getting ridiculous! But then again I guess it is not with kiss and tell slappers mind you they are not all prostitutes, think of Rebecca Loos.

I am sure that you are careful with who you chose to see and that they have good reputations and unless you are someone news worthy I am pretty sure you are safe!

Silverado how do you know that is what comes up from a rare escorts site, you moonlighing as a rent boy? :P

Exactly sometimes guys ask for reassurance their number doesn't go onto a database, or say they aren't prepared to ring from a non-withheld because they are married etc. We aren't interested in kiss and tell, we are interested in providing a good time and maintaining a good standard of living. A high proportion of clients have partners, and some might have important jobs shock horror!

What is interesting is that a lot of guys do trust us, whilst a few get paranoid. That few usually don't realise they simply aren't THAT important. I don't mean that callously but I do mean that generally. Those that worry usually don't realise how 'unimportant' they are. Away from the booking a WG generally doesn't gossip about her clients, and only would do so if you have commited some grievous offence.

mebbe a bigger risk is girls keeping punters details on unencrypted spreadsheets on laptops that may get lost.

Yeah but even then what is going to happen? If the person is honest will have a look to clues as to who's it is to return, if it was stolen will a thief go to the trouble of reading what is on there or just wipe it clean and sell it on, and what will they find?

Usually when you send an email, the originating senders (i.e. you) IP address is included in the header.

Using the header information from the email you can find out the location the email was sent from using This Site

Both email address and ip address lookups typically are very inaccurate because they will just refer to information from you ISP and there servers. I have had my email address tested on one of these email adress lookups, and it was over 50 miles off where I lived. It just pulled up the location of my ISPs email server location.

Using IP address lookup it is over 200 miles off my location. My work IP addresses are listed as coming from the US.

This information might be more accurate if you use your own domain name and use that for your own email address.

With the rise in Identity theft, any proper thief would try and go through the laptop and see what they could find. They might find the information they need to access a bank account, or find the information they need to take out a loan in the laptop owners name. Potentially far more lucrative than what they would make selling it on Ebay. Best defense with something like that is TrueCrypt or other disk encryption tool.

See they wouldn't bother with a list of first names(many of which will be false anyway) and numbers, they'd go in for the really valuable stuff. That's if they haven't wiped it and sold it on - most theives are not that sophisticated.

Are we on the same forum? Simply being there could be enough for someone to lose a job or a marriage.

Yes we are and yes I am aware of that - I meant by the WG herself. If the police wished to trace someone then they need a jolly good reason.
