Im Worried I May Have Syphilis

49 posts in this topic

Started a new thread as this one is more specific than the clinic one. Went for a test at the GUM clinic a few week back, and got a text this morning to contact them. The nurse i spoke to said everything came back negative (inc HIV), but the bloodtest for syphilis came back "inconclusive". She said they normally come back negative, but they can appear inconclusive at times. This is either due to human error (not sure what that means?), or not enough blood. Anyway she said the sample has been sent off to a bigger lab in Leeds where they can test it more thoroughly or something.

I have had no symptoms of an STI. I thought syphilis started with a small, painless sore or ulcer? I havent had anything like that, nor a rash. Can it be symptomless?

She told me i have nothing to worry about and she isnt concerned about it too much (always have covered sex with a WG, but unprotected oral which i told her), but when someone says that to you on the phone, you cant help but worry. May take 2 more week before i know for sure, but im worried like hell now. Just wanted to get it off my chest as its hard to talk to people i know about it for obvious reasons

So yea, anyone else had inconclusive results?

No directly comparable experience, but I feel for you.

Everything she's told you is reassuring, but of course you're anxious – and thus taking "inconclusive" way beyond face value. We've all done it.

All the signs are that you're fine, you have no obvious risks. OWO is more likely to pass gonorrhea (or HPV, we now learn) than syph; WGs are more likely to be clued up on sexual health than many another sex partner.

Try to hold on to the cold facts while you wait - after all there's nothing else you can do! ;) Chances are that all is well.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for that. How common is catching Syphilis via OWO?

I know technically im no worse off (i didnt know if i had to before the test, and i still dont now), but it seems its human nature to think the worse. The nurse did say she will check my notes daily to see when the results are back

Was going to have a punt on Friday but obviously i wont do that incase i have got something. Not fair on the girl

Just to add, i was on Penicillin for tonsillitis about 5 week ago. I asked if this could have effected the result, but she said no. However, according to the NHS website a Penicllin is used to treat the disease. So wonder if they would have cured it even if i did have it?

One question that they do seem to ask is have you taken antibiotics during the last four weeks. From what you say (antibiotics five weeks ago) that could have been within the four week period when they took the sample from you for analysis. That may be what is cauing the test to come back unclear, but that is only speculation. I would suggest getting back in touch, and ask if this info about taking antibiotics could be significant.

Good luck

They asked during the initial consulation when i last took antibiotics. I said i cant remember exactly but its around 4-5 week. She said thats fine. I then said on the phone today it was 4-5 week since i last had antibiotics and she said this wouldnt have effected the results.

Sorry, can't tell you. But, in general on a quick search, gonorrhea rates are about 30 times syphilis infections; chlamydia rate about 1000 times higher than syphilis (really!). It's highly unlikely that you got syphilis from OWO.

But there you go - you can't help worrying. Try to stick with the facts. See a film. Read a book. Great that you've got the nurse on your side, too.

Thanks. Just read up about it on nhs website, and seems it nothing much to worry about providing its caught in the early stages.

I doubt very much you'll have it.

Something similar happend to me a few years back...had a blood test, asked back as it was abnormal, scared shitless I had cancer or something. Turned out I was dehydrated on the day of the test and this had given rise to odd results. Considering it was the middle of Summer and the hottest day of the year, the quacks could have saved me a whole load of stress, if they had said in the letter that this was a possibility!

Yea bet that was awful for you. The guy taking my blood did say it looked very oxygenated and light in colour to say it was taken directly from the vein. Dunno why, neither did he. Who knows if this had an effect.

Just wish they hadnt have told me tho, and instead sent them off to be tested again without me knowing

I too have been told about taking antibiotics which can affect the results - on my first time at a GUM, I had to cancel the test literally just after I had arrived as I had no idea about this rule!

How long after your last encounter did you have the test done? There's supposed to be something like a 6 week period since your last exposure to give a conclusive result.

Assuming you mean sex, rather than last time i took antibiotics, about 4 days :D

I told them it was a few month tho just incase they said come back in a few week or something. Ive been seeing WG's regular for about a year anyway

I'm still waiting for the punchline.

The GUM clinic can/will tell you everything you need to know. Any so called experts here, are amateurs by comparison.

I've been having unprotected oral sex for over 30 years, and no diseases, my buddy has unprotected sex for similar time, no diseases, a 19yr old private, had sex first time, now has HIV - go figure.

Syphilis shows few symptoms on a women for a very long time which is why girls need to get regular checks. It is easy for a girl to get syphilis through owo and then pass it on through sex without her even realising. It would be very unlikely she would pass it on through owo though.

I had a BF that was shagging a WG who offered OWO, it was me who noticed the large spot on his dick the first sign of syphilis before either of them even knew they had it. I know they were pathetically having unprotected sex and that she had caught it through OWO and passed it onto him through BB. I was very lucky not to catch it and I don't know how I didn't but it was an unpleasant way to find out what is going on in your love life behind your back.

Unless you have a large white spot it is called a chancer on your dick I would not worry and as you only had OWO then I would say the chances are minimal, if you are having unprotected sex then just like him you deserve all you get. I would say the clinic have just messed up, probably lost your sample or something. I have blood tests all the time for thyroid problems and every few months they use the excuse we didn't take enough blood which according to my doctor means lost it somewhere.

Its called a calculated risk I believe, the risk is that the next person you see is infected - Russian roulette is a very similar game and at least if you lose that one death is painless and instant.

They havent lost it as the same sample has been sent off again to a different lab. Like i said i was on Penicllin a month before the test, maybe that caused problems who knows. Thanks for the info anyway. And no never had BB sex (WG or not) in my life

Syphillis is not the scourge it used to be.

I believe its pretty much treatable nowerdays anyway.

I have had exactly the same issues as you not once but twice my GUM sends it to Bristol. What it means is that the local lab can not test it but the other labs have more accurate equipment. Non conclusive can be due to many reasons. If you had caught syphilis in the last six months you would more than likely have known about it by now, spots on the skin, palms of the hands and feet etc.

It is treatable but like herpes it stays in your body and will always show in a blood test, and they will tell your GP like they do with HIV.

If you go down to the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons you can see their collection of pathological specimens, with skulls pockmarked with syphilis, bones deformed by it, and dicks with syphilitic sores in formalin. The retired surgeon conducting parties round said that when he was training in the 1960s they still had old men presenting as teaching patients with these deformed limbs.
