Human trafficking exists in almost every country on earth. As many as 27 million people are estimated to live in modern slavery. Can this problem be stopped?

After watching the BBC debate in the link here I'm surprised that there's no distinction is being made between "human trafficking" and "slavery". These are two very different terms that sometimes come together and sometimes not. For ej: the thousands of mexican migrant workers who get smuggled through the dessert in Arizona. Those mexicans will pay 2,000 $ to a proffesional trafficker to have them smuggled into ranchs, factories or sketchy construction sites within the US. These guys KNOW what the deal is and how much they're going to get payed. Does that constitute trafficking? Yes. Is that slavery? No because they can leave whenever they want. I think the appropriate term BBC should be using for this debate is "slave trafficking".

The abolitionists and the rescue industry prefer to keep the issues muddled; an objective and open-minded approach to the complex realities of migrant lives will always undermine their simplistic views.

At least the BBC made an effort to inject some balance in the debate by inviting the indispensable Laura Agustin:
