Secret Diary Of A Call Girl Is Back

36 posts in this topic

I see Secret Diary of a Call Girl is back soon on ITV2.

Watching the very glamourous advert, it got me thinking, does it give an over glamourised perspective on escorting?

I think about it in the context of;

1 - The sexism debate in football.

2 - The economic crisis and rising unemployment.

Is it too simplistic to believe the show does a) it does lead guys to objectify women more and consider perhaps seeing an escort more than that ordinarily would have and B) if a younger lady is struggling to find work (as the statistics show) and happens to see the show, would see consider escorting, without thinking of the downsides, because of the very glamourous style of the show?

I'm not saying what is right or wrong here, but I just wonder on people's view of this show?

I wouldn't say drawing more clients or workers to the industry is a 'bad' influence, nor is giving a more palatable view of the sex industry to the public. The show is not in the least bit realistic, and that's my only criticism of it. However, it's enjoyable fluff. I just wish the media would be a little more responsible, follow it up with more coverage of real sex workers and our views instead of a fictionalised version of one woman's short term experience with the industry.

That's never going to happen, no broadcaster would want to go on the line and dispel the myths.

Well, it's too soon to be sure, but I did an interview for a documentary last week, so assuming the other people they interview aren't all antis, it could be fairly well balanced :P I guess we'll find out for sure when it actually goes out on TV. I've got editorial control over my segmant so I'm certainly not going to be manipulated into saying anything stupid out of context, but I can't make any promises about the tone of the piece yet.

Public opinion is changing, it just takes time. Lots of time :P

Each series so far has had a knock on effect on the number of short term escorts that sign up for various sites.

Once they realise it is not as glamourous, (although sometimes it can be!) as the programme portrays they disappear into the woodwork.

I enjoy the programme and think that it has brought a certain level of understanding to the general populous that we are not all drug crazed street walkers a la Band of Gold etc.

Enjoy!

There can never be a fair and realistic TV show about escorts until someone invents a way to transmit the smell of old man's unwashed bum-crack in to the viewer's living room.

Do you say that with some evidence or is it just a gut reaction? I’ve not noticed such an effect on, say, Adultw*rk.

I agree with you entirely here. Whilst it may be a bit over-glamorised, Belle has not been a million miles away from some of the escorts I’ve chosen to see over the years. I think, as a programme, it must really drive the radfem lobby nuts! :)

Funnily enough watching the first series I learnt quite a lot (grew up in a small village and perhaps a bit of a sheltered upbringing, along with I feel the media's high handed and poor attitude to WGs which we have been fed for years gave me a poor understanding). And whilst it is a TV series and not real life it taught me, as Pandora has said, an understanding I did not previously have and I think was quite instrumental in me starting what has been so far a fabulous education. Being, small, single and unattractive I am lucky enough to have enjoyed wonderful liaisons with gorgeous women I would never have had the courage to talk to let alone anything else. So I will settle down this week to watch this series and perhaps some more education!!

Do you know the title of the documentary Krystal & when it is likely to be shown? I trust it will give a true picture of the escort scene. I think that many people think of escorts as horrible old bags with fags sticking out of the corner of their mouths (as shown in cartoons). All of us on this forum know that the reality is so very different from that. In my 20 or so years of punting I have met some really lovely Ladies (in every sense of the word). Sadly some of them have retired and of course it is not then possible (unfortunately) to keep in touch. With me it is not just the sex but the person herself that matters. I can never have sex with someone whom I did not like or get on wwith; perhaps I am in a minority in that respect.

I can very much understand the character Belle and it's how I would have envisaged an Escort to be. We can all play the part when we want to; the nice hotels/restaurant, best garb and after shave and well .... I like the lady who wrote it and I think if you're going to do something make sure you do it as best you can and take as many positives from each situation that you can. Contrast it all with the documentaries that show the girls hooked on drugs and/or pimped walking the streets, also the women in Thailand and the sex tourists and I know what I would prefer to watch/experience.

Is it a bad influence?

It'll be a bad influence on me when Gemma Chan makes her appearance... yum.

If only. Unfortunately they simply seem to have assimilated it into their rhetoric as a further stick to beat the sex industry with - roughly speaking, the argument goes, "there's a danger of impressionable young girls buying into the glamorous Belle de Jour/happy hooker myth, only to find that the grim reality is far different". I've seen that argument touted around a few times over the past year or so, and the emergence of the real Belle into the public eye doesn't seem to have dampened it.

Having said which, I thought Dr Magnanti's conduct when she went public was exemplary, and let's hope that's done a bit of good. And it may be that the programme itself has done a bit of good too, by showing the industry in a less negative light.

There can never be a fair and realistic TV (or newspaper story) about anything; its about entertainment and selling newspapers and advertising, not about truth and realism.

Yes, both. There are more people on that site, but more noticeably, there are always a truck load of newbies on SAAFE asking for information on how to get started. We refer them back to the main site info, (which gives them realistic advice), then they tend to drop away.

There is also a dramatic increase in timewasters and idiot requests when Belle comes out too... :(

For one who clearly lacks three-dimensional vision, I am surprised that you can tell the difference. You have much to look forward to in life, young man, if only you are lucky enough to tear the scales from your eyes before you are old and gray. Life doesn't end at 30, it merely gets better with each passing decade thereafter - if you let it. :D

I'm open minded and read differing opinions from which I form my own. I've never said I am the authority and final word on any subject, in fact it's you that seems to pooh pooh anybody that has an alternative opinion to yours. As time passes by there are many things we can no longer do that we enjoyed doing when we were younger. That's a natural consequence of age. Having sex with a woman old enough to be your grandaughter is very rare if you are not paying for it - that's life, reality and responsibility. People have cosmetic surgery/pay for sex and good luck to them if that keeps them happy - it wouldn't me. I don't want to be having sex with young girls when I am aged I want a companion and love, for richer for poorer etc etc. I don't want temptation to ever get the better of me again. I want to see the value of everything rather than the cost. I don't want to travel to SE Asia and have sex with young girls who are driven to it by abject poverty, neither do I want to have sex with a girl who walks the street feeding a drug habit or her pimp. That adds no value whatsoever to my life.

More importantly when is the new series on....I love this program :D

I haven't watched any of it. Seen glimpses but for me its a little patronising and I don't really need what I do in my secret time to be blown in the open domain. So I avoid watching it. All I know is that there are a fuck load of guys who visit escorts and that number is rising by the day. Do you ever sit on a train and look around and wonder how many are off to visit a WG or already have? You might see a guy walking out of a flat you are walking into to see an escort sometime but the fact remains you can't really put faces into your perceptions because its such a wide segment of men who see an escort.

i think the problem isnt the program itself but all those viewers that think everything on TV is real! Like Billie Piper says she gets nasty looks etc from people in her village that actually think she is a hooker.

But seeing her on programmes like Alan Carr chatty man joining him in taking the piss out of escorting and 'prostitutes' helps keep my views on it grounded somewhat (and stops me from wanting to watch it)

oh and apparently it's not even Billie's boobies - she has a tit stunt double. Boo! Hiss!

I think you'll find the truth Is not quite as you say, yes the bargirls come from the poorer rural NE, but things aren't as desperate as you might believe, If a thai girl wants to get a job she can earn £40 a week working In a shop, but just like ladies In this country, some prefer to earn a higher wage hooking.
