Zinc Tablets

22 posts in this topic

I am a fifty-something guy. A few months ago my sex drive dropped almost to zero. I was about to go and see my doctor when I heard on a well known TV programme, for those of us who enjoy sex, that Zinc diet supplements could help. So as I could not quite pluck up courage to see the GP I thought I would give it a try.

Nothing improved for 2-3 weeks, but as I had bought 60 day's worth, I carried on. After about a month things began to improve and by the end of two months, I was back to normal or I think even better than my old self. I may have had some unknown temporary condition that went away by itself, or do zinc tablets really work? Has anyone else tried these? Do we have any medical experts on here who can comment?

Low zinc levels can be associated with lowered sex drive and/or taking extra zinc can assist with libido. I think it influences the production of the hormone testosterone. That said you might have just been going through a general lull anyway, difficult to tell. Just remember you aren't a machine, but a living organism which does fluctuate at times.

coincidentally I've had a sports chum strongly recommending zinc tablets a preventative for colds. He's also into some other scientifically unproven therapists, so I am sceptical.

I'm most definitely not a medical expert but a quick search on the wen revealed hundreds of "health food" type sites promoting zinc supplements as an excellent way to restore a flagging sex drive. Nothing on the major recognised mainstream health sites though.

Still, if it works for you, don't knock it !

Loads of foods for zinc if you dont want to buy specific tablets.

Oysters (obviously), beef, peanuts.....

Can help with sex drive and stop hairloss apparently (although the latter doesnt seem to be ringing true for me :( )

Careful thou as too much aparently can stop absorbtion of copper and iron.

Not sure about sex drive but Biotin tablets (vitamin H) will certainly help with hair loss.

I've read quite a few articles on the sexual health benefits of zinc. IIRC, amongst the benefits are a reduced risk of prostate problems and increased volume of semen when ejaculating. Supposedly a lot of male porn starts consume high doses of zinc.

As well as zinc, the following supplements are believed to aid libido, virility etc.

No doubt there are many others.

gingko biloba (thins the blood slightly)

ginseng

vitamin E

vitamin B

L-arginine

I don't think any of them have known contra-indications.

If you overdo the vitamin B your urine will turn bright yellow, but it's harmless otherwise.

Just stick to recommended dosages.

The most important thing, as the OP highlights, is to persevere.

Unlike viagra and its chums, none of them have an instant effect.

Every day for a month or two should make a noticeable improvement, however.

Not disputing what you say, but I can't say I've ever noticed this claim on the packet though.

Apart from the fact that zinc DOES have some side effects, I would prefer to know if someone is taking zinc. Why?...because it makes the man juice taste absolutely disgusting. It is truly vile !

It's a Trace Element that the body needs a certain amount of, same as the Electrolytes. I think it helps the liver somehow, not sure though.

Yes I know but anyone who knows anything about CIM knows that what you eat affects your taste. Zinc is for me, definitely the worst.

I thought that zinc was for quantity, not quality?

If I may just point out an added benefit of the consuption of large quantities of Zinc when coincidentally passed out of the body naturally, at the same time you experience a build up of static electricity from nylon / plastic lavatory seats, will in fact result in your rusty sheriffs badge becoming galvanised and therefore much more presentable at muti male attended parties. - I believe its difficult to tell which sex is admiring your assets in such situations.

Helen. Happy to help.

I believe zinc, as with many other minerals, impacts and is impacted by others you take. If you take large amounts of zinc, for example, I believe you can suffer deficiency in copper and iron.

I generally take a multi vitamin and mineral all in one per day and look to make the rest up via diet. Staying well hydrated appears key also.

Semen is particularly rich in zinc and so no doubt is high in concentration in the prostate. I think zinc is found in (or acts to bind) many proteins (enzymes) in our body, found throughout it.

It would seem an interesting area is zinc acts as an aromatase inhibitor, which stops testosterone being converted to estrogen.

Seriously Dave, many many things can effect your libido, and unfortunately a lot of them are metaphysical - that is to say symptoms of other hidden problems. Stress anxiety and depression can all be present without you (us) noticing them. Hormone levels can fluctuate wildy simply because of the enviroment and /or situation we experience. Losing or gaining weight, good news bad news, Even a slight infection anywhere including the common cold can play michevious gameswith our chemical selves. It could be a symptom of your advancing age, or just a blip in your chemical balance.

The good thing is that you wanted to be back on top of the game and here you are telling us that is exactly where you are - Better than ever,

Whether that was a lack of zinc or something else you probably will never know. Your recovery of your libido could be down to many things settling back into place after a reorganiation by your bits and bobs.

How did you lose so much Zinc that it needed replacing individually to return you to full working order? Seems unlikely doesnt it. I think a body that is fantstically complex and intricate, and a brain that is caused or denied emotions and desires by the actions of hormones made up of complex chemical compounds is far to complex a system to be mended with a pinch of this or that !

Whatever the reason you found your Mojo again its good news for you, and of course for your local escorts who will no doubt benefit just as much from your new found vigor.

Could have been the placebo effect?
