Advice - Giving Up Punting Etc

13 posts in this topic

Hi all,

I have found punting and related activities have become more than just a random play to now more like my hobby, in that i dont think of it when working, or away etc, but when i am free at home, its what i plan and work towards.

I am keen to stop/change it to less frequent and wanted some thoughts/tips/guidance

thank you

Ced

Ultimately it is down to your self-control, but you could try things like setting a maximum budget/frequency and then try to progressively reduce it. You could also seek to remove temptation by not having cash available to spend, or choose not to punt locally so that when you do it has to be a decision that requires some real effort. I don't know if any of these ideas will work for you, but good luck.

Vicar gives helpful advice here.

I'm afraid I am of no help whatsoever since I intend to continue punting until I am completely unable so to do for whatever reason - (death would be valid I reckon).

Cedric, I wish you well

Hi guys, first post here!!! I have not punted for a few months due to lack of money, I do think I was doing it a bit much to be honest, but now I cant do it due to having no money, I dont miss it like I thought I would. It was hard for the first few weeks, but after a bit I got used to not punting. I have had some great times in sheffield when I lived there, now I live close to derby, have been to various places in derby, and one in birmingham, great memories.

Well for starters I would stop looking at this forum, as its unlikely you will lose the urge if you continually read about other peoples experiences. B)

I was going to say the same. Also dont surf any punting related sites at all, the purple site, agency sites etc, go cold turkey. :)

As the Vicar says its all about self control ultimately.

You could always aim to reward your abstention with a major treat (new car, new 3d TV, holiday etc). Set up an abstention fund and every time you are tempted to punt, put the money in the fund instead. Once you have built up to the cost of your treat, indulge yourself.

Also, I second the advice to stay away from this site. All the "you should have seen the girl I shagged last night" stories are the last thing you need to hear when you are trying to give up.

Finally, take up a new cheaper, time intensive hobby.

I would agree that keeping busy, and consequently becoming time poorer (for punting) is a good way of removing the temptation. I don't entirely agree that reading this site is a bad thing; there have been times when I've been on here a lot (another addiction in itself :o ) yet happily resisted the urge to punt. The two don't necessarily go hand in hand, though if you want to give up completely then curtailing time on Pnet and other sites will probably be necessary.

I guess some of the answers lie with the OP, some have recommended watching porn instead, but I could see that working either way, it might satisfy a need, but it might also stimulate a desire. Only the OP can judge which approach will work for him.

I did hear that there were one or two vacancies at the local monastery ;)

I'd advise not just keeping busy, but also keeping yourself interested in other things.

I remember the critic William Empson claiming that mental arithmetic was a good alternative to masturbation. Our pricks are always there clamouring to be gratified, but their cries can sometimes be drowned out by gratifying other parts of ourselves as well.

^^^^ what the others have said

In my first year i went a bit mad shall we say so I deluded myself a couple of years ago by publicly saying i was "retiring" from this pastime.

Who was i kidding LOL

While i will only punt once or twice a year now i do find that finding other interests and keeping off boards like these do help with loosing the urge to see a WG.

It's been almost a year since my last not so great punt (my head just was not in it). Mind ypu after seeing Taya's latest photos i could be making a visit.

Sir puntsalot needs to change his monika I think - although I havn't tried to give up punting and have no desire too, I think the idea of putting the money to one side to buy something else is a good one. Worked for me with the smokes.
