Good morning!

I'm currently conducting an MA dissertation looking at the experiences of male partners of female sex workers - my supervisor for this (and for my PhD) is Teela Sanders, who I'm sure will ring a bell via her books 'Sex Work: a Risky Business' and 'Paying for Pleasure: Men Who Buy Sex'.

I won't write too much on here, this is an initial call for interest. My research aims to examine the accounts given by male partners. I already have three participants, an additional three would be perfect. Rest assured this project will be subject to rigorous scrutiny - no need to worry about sensationalist tangents and misrepresentation.

Many thanks for reading,

Scarlet

Interesting. So you are not interested in punters, but Partners of WG's.

Hi Bazzerbill,

Yes that's right. There's already been a fair amount of research now looking at clients (Teela dedicated a whole book to it) and there's a plethora of literature directly with sex workers. My plan is to shift research to other areas of sex workers lives, personal relationships being an important one. As more and more women enter the sex industry, it follows that there will be an increase in 'periphery' people - partners, children, friends, industry organisers. I'm specifically looking at partners and their accounts in order to illustrate the male voice and perspective of being involved with a sex professional. This has only been hinted at and briefly touched upon so far and invariably is told through the female perspective (eg sex workers lamenting relationship joys and troubles).

The problem is, to access the male partners, I have to go through the female sex workers (unless anyone out there knows something I don't!) and this appears to be a fairly major hurdle.

Thanks for replying, perhaps more people will see this post now! :)

Mike52 on here has openly stated that he has been in this situation. Why don't you PM him.

Just wondering why we get so many students posting here about research into prostitution, is it now seen as an easy option? find a forum and get the info posted to you, have you thought about getting out into the real world and visit in person?

JKay,

I expect Punternet is used as a recruitment method primarily as it's the longest standing site around. With respect, it is absolutely NOt an easy option, merely a tool for recruiting participants who then get the choice of how they are interviewed. Particularly for this topic, how else would I get hold of male partners of female sex workers? 'Getting out there' suggests there is a place I can go to, where I can find my participants. I personally think that place is online, not out in the 'physical' world.

Regards,

S

Well you could try to email direct through ladies websites, PN is a great prostitution tool for punters and WG's but not a great place to find partners of WG's unless there WG's allow them to sample the opposition!

Why the sudden upsurge in students researching prostituion, is it for the shock factor?

Of all the students that have asked us for help, many made promises to come back and show us the end result, some of us show an interest even if its just out of politness but as yet they just harvested the info and are never to be seen again, I'm not just a punter, I'm interested in how our academics view and judge us.

With respect JKay, I don't think anyone would respond well to an email arriving in their inbox from someone wanting to talk to our partners (if we have one).

I think it makes much more sense to do it through PN, where any WGs who have partners who may be willing to participate can contact Scarlett via pm.

I've taken part in an academic study and the researcher concerned kept in touch and I was able to read the final Thesis, which had some interesting findings. Teela Saunders is very well respected in the industry and I would be confident that a student of hers could be relied upon to keep in touch if her interviewees wanted that.

Hi again JKay,

My plan was not to access partners directly through here (although that has happened, ironically). The point was to access the sex workers themselves who could then come forward and say they have a partner who may be interested.

Carpet bombing individual email addresses is extremely time consuming and often fruitless - for example how would I know if the women even had partners? There is likely to be suspicion, or just a lack of interest. When an escort is checking her emails, she is looking for bookings, not to help out a post grad researcher. I could email 200 women and not get any response, yet a post on here has yielded several different avenues now. I'm sure you can appreciate that, method wise, it's a no brainer.

I'm sorry you feel let down by past researchers. I'm surprised of any promises to 'come back and show you the result'. My dissertation will be 15,000 words, with another 40,000 words of transcripts and bumph alongside that no doubt. Researchers will be governed by whatever they put in the consent form, so if they stipulate to interviewees that the research will only be used in conferences, journals, etc (which is unlikely at Masters level) then the researcher has to respect that - we can't email it out to anyone who is simply interested. However, if you yourself have taken part in someone's research, you have absolutely every right to see the finished product.

Your comment about shock factor - prostitution has been researched really quite rampantly for some time now, it's just recently (last 15 years or so) that the focus has shifted from the street scene. This can only be a good thing surely, by acknowledging the many facets of prostitution? If you are interested in how academia is currently presenting sex work, I can point you in the direction of some very topical, recent texts. The changing nature of technology is mirrored by changing modes of prostitution, both of which now get covered. There really is an abundance of academic research out there to get your mitts on :)

S

Thanks Sarita, only just read your response. My own responses are moderated so take time to appear.

Yes Teela is very highly regarded and also very committed to sex work research (she recently received the Northern Lights top 50 award for research). Bridging the gap between academia and the 'real world' is not the easiest thing to do!

I can understand caution and scepticism, but I think the 'easy option' comment is a little unfair, in a dissertation the hard or easy option is really determined by the subject matter. Finding an effective methods of researching (or recruiting in this case) is really a basic skill developed at the under graduate level.

The OP was very open about the reason for the approach. Teela Sanders has reputation for taking an academically fair and independent approach to our community and the wider industry. The fact she is the supervisor is good sign. The email address is consistent with the correct establishment, but if you have concern of legitimacy Teela's email address is easily found on the University of Leeds website by goggling her name.

I don't fit the subject profile so I cannot help the OP, but do think this approach is one of the most legit we've ever had.

Quite happy to chat and answer questions, give opinions etc, they will fairly obviously be from my point of view, I did meet other partners of WGs, naturally we didn't all have the same viewpoints of our partners working lives.

Mike52, I've replied...

Thanks for all the support so far, I really appreciate it.

Am now in email contact with several people, many thanks for keeping this thread alive!

S :)

PS yes, if you wish to find out for yourself if I'm 'for real' - then Teela is easily google-able and can verify I'm above board!

I had the pleasure of a meeting and interview with SexWorkAcademic this afternoon. She seemed be intelligent and non judgemental, didn't even seem surprised that wasn't wearing a dirty Mac', (hot weather like this I leave it in my car boot). The questions she asked were interesting and I would say very relevant to the subject she is working on. If anyone else was thinking of contacting her I would heartily recomend it, she is genuine and seems very keen to learn from meetings.

Thanks for the 'review' Mike52 :)

I've now fully conducted and transcribed interviews with two board members. I'm very appreciative of all who have come forward so far and look forward to hopefully a couple of more exchanges with different people.

Thanks for the support so far,

S

FR's on interviews!

I got the copy of the interview back to day for review, quite impressive since we only met on Thursday afternoon and the nation seems to have been shut for the last few days.

Just a note to say a massive thank you to all of the people who have taken part and come forward to help me with this research, I really appreicate it. I've now recruited and interviewed the maximum number feasible for the scope of this project, which is fantastic.

Thanks once again!

S :-)

Scarlett will probably put it all together and run away shouting "They're all a bunch of wierdo freaks!", (if she has any sense) ;)

Yes of course, I promise I will hunt down this thread should the dissertation make it to a journal or suchlike! As it happens, an online journal has just invited me to submit an article regarding my first research dissertation (interview project with 2 sex workers), so if that makes it to the WWW, I will come back and link to that too :)

All interviewees provided fantastic, candid insights. Rest assured I will do these accounts justice as best I can (within such a limited word count). I also hope to return to this topic post PhD - it's become glaringly clear that there's a book's-worth of research addressing partners' experiences...
