I was just wondering how many punters/WGs have had the Hepatitis B vaccine and whether you would recommend it to other people starting punting?

Punter here. I've had the vaccine following some sound health advice from a working girl. It's a sensible precaution for any punter / wg imho.

If you've ever been checked up at a GUM clinic and told them about your misdeeds they should offer it to you for free straight away. Meant I didn't have to pay for it before travelling. Bonus! :D

More than just a sensible precaution, it's very important for your health, as well as that of other punters and WG's. If you want to indulge in this hobby, you should at least man up and take some responsibility.

As Kitty says, it's free, and those nice people at the Gum clinics have seen it all before. You need to get over your self consciousness and go and get it sorted. They won't be judgemental.

Think I'm right to say that this depends on the individual - I had the jabs when I first started working (think I needed a boost soon after if memory serves me right). Since then, when I visit the GUM, my blood is monitored to ensure the level of whatever it is they check for, is still OK.

Aye, I've had it. I got offered it free by the GUM clinic about 15 seconds after first mentioning the word "escort". Can't see why anyone would say no (and I am sure we all visit GUM clinics regularly eh ?).

Wikipedia is a bit vague on this. Modern thought seems that the vaccine provides protection for "at least 25 years". Health workers are still advised to get a booster every 5 years though. Perhaps you should ask at your next GUM visit. My vaccination was only 2.5 years ago.

Hep B theoretically needs boosting after 5 years (my anti-bodies are still strong so didn't require the booster).

(I expect that you will also have been vaccinated against Hep A... you need a booster within a six to twelve months to make the Hep A vaccine good for 10 years.)

FWIW, and as can be worked out from the above I've had Hep B (at the GU) and Hep A (by a GP before travelling to Africa last year).

Similar here had it before a gap year pre uni, some time ago and may need boosting now. If I remember right it cost me a bomb as well, perhaps I should have said I was taking up punting rather than volunteering abroad, strange pricing system ay. Still know for the booster

Made my arm swell like hell when I had it and the follow up booster about ten years ago. Have had one booster since and that one was fine.

Had the original vaccine seven years ago so I specifically asked them to check my level of the vaccine last time I went. My level of protection was now at intermediate rather than high so I had a booster to bring it back up.

I too have had it and it was offered to me once my doctor knew of my occupation.

Me too - I got it at the GUM clinic on my first appointment although there was another injection after a month and then a third six months later, I don't know if it's the same now? Mine took first time, but I know of plenty of people who had to have it again after it didn't work, so you need to make sure you get your immunity checked after.

I had mine when I first visited a GUM clinic for sex workers- it was 3 injections, followed by a test to check I had sufficient antibodies. The test said I hadn't made quite enough, so I had a fourth booster. Mine was free! (Thanks NHS). V x x

Yes, I had it done a few years ago and a recent check for immunity showed it was still OK, even though the GUM staff will say a booster is required every 5 years.
