I was watching a re-run of the late 70's early 80's (30 yr old) 'The Professionals' the other morning.

The polt included a portrayal obviously 'low end' drug addicted pimped prostitute, (incall btw lol) Doyle, posing as a client asked her 'how much darlin' ...£50 for half an hour dearie she replied. Which surpisingly is the same amount of a lot of second hour fees of independents available today. In fact some half hours are cheaper nowdays are they not.

I know its only fantasy TV but it must have been partly accurate in ts 'facts' Have prices really stayed that static since the late 7's early 80's ? or did some TV researcher make a massive faux pas.

The Billie Piper character "Belle" charges £350/hour. I would say that this is not a typical fee, even for a girl with the looks of ms Piper, £200 would still be high, £180 realistic, imo! So, I wouldn't read much into £50 for 1/2 hour 30 years ago.

I came to the conclusion some time ago that what ever you charge there are always those who will complain but they have the choice to spend their money as they see fit. Not clear why they feel the need to complain as each woman charges what she feels happy to sell her wares for and if she is happy with the business that level of charges bring, and not those who choose to complain.

Looks is only one aspect of how a WG sets her fees or the Establishment who offer work to her, location, local competition, services offered also play a part. What they believe they can get is of course the main point.

I had a regular who was to my mind stunning an opinion shared by many punters on here and by FR, her rate was £100-110 an hour, a view i have seen on here many times is the very most beautiful WGs charge more, thats simply not necessarily the case in my experience of punting at £350 an hour and at £80 an hour, there was no difference on looks, clearly proved to me over many years.

A number of factors have meant that prices have not gone up in line with general inflation. The large influx of women from new EU states, the internet, the mobile phone and a change in general attitude to prostitution. Only yesterday Helen Wood - ex escort - was on Newsnight.

I'd say that prices are much the same or marginally cheaper than 10+ years ago when I started punting....mind you that it pretty much in line with my own rate as an IT contractor

According to Smiths on another thread the real Belle was charged out by the agency at £300/hr

Yes, I was aware of that figure being quoted too, but it has no relavence to the point I was making!

A non-punter watching SDOAGC, might think that £350/hour was a typical figure to hire a high-class escort, at the present time....we all know, it's not! The £50 for half an hour in 1979 might be just as bogus!

I can't go back further than the mid '80s when in Brum, you could get a quality half hour with an independent for £20-£25.

Price for a punt 40 years ago, in Danube st,(famous adress), was 3 pounds. Prices have gone up with inflation, but service and standards of looks, has gone through the roof.

Not really on topic but there was another episode of the Professionals shown on ITV4 a few days ago (it is still available on ITV Player: the one dated 03 May) that had what seemed a surprisingly contemporary attitude to prostitution. CI5 hired a high-class call girl to trap an assassin. The lady was depicted as coming from a good background (it later turns out Cowley knew her father), being intelligent, educated and cultured, and having made a choice to go into that line of work, certainly not forced into it or driven by drugs. It was an impressively positive portrayal.

The problem for me as a lover of The Professionals and The Sweeney even more so is the diabolical editing ITV4 do, cutting out crucial dialogue and parts of scenes so they can fit the episode in the time slot. Even post watershed they hack these programmes to pieces, just as well i have them as they were made originally on DVD.

Dan thats exactly on topic.

The episode I saw involved the taping of a senior politician with said prostitute, the politician then being blackmailed by the KBG.

I'm not sure the researchers got it right with a drug addicted prostitute being able to command £50 per half hour in 1980

I suspect whoever was reponsible for that gem was in a canteen que and asked someone how much a prostitute charged, the answer coming from someone who had read int the NOTW that a high class girl has charged £50

Sounds a lot of money for a half hour when the avaerage wage in 1980 was 6k . ( a lot less for manual workers pretended by Doyle)

In '80 petrol cost 28p a litre a pint of beer was 35p a loaf of bread 33p and a pint of milk 17p. £50 for a half hour seems an outrageous amount for the type of girl protrayed.

Apparently the last time we had such a deep recession as now was in the second half of 1980 too.

I wondered why they ended so bluntly. Theyre quite comedic entertainment though I think with the Macho double act Bodie and Doyle work on suspects lol.

The Sweeny is a bit too serious for me but I do like spotting some of the cars I did my early courting in! *Sighs at the Cortina crusader experience ;)

I seem to remember that in the episode the girl charged Doyle £1 for a shot of whisky. She was a real clockwatcher as well - and her pimp was in the next room.

I can remember petrol at £1.20 a gallon in 1980 as I'd just bought a new motorbike that year.

Originally both programmes were 49-50 minutes each episode with the rest in their hour slot being ads, on ITV4 they are about 45-46 minutes each episode in an hour lot with more ads so 3-5 minutes is cut out completely. As The Sweeney had plenty of, swearing, violence and nudity, pre-watershed fair enough to cut that out but the whole programme and its storyline have so much missing.

The Sweeney being the very first outside the studio on location mainstream drama made it unique at the time and i absolutely loved it and still do 37 years after the pilot. An updated film version is on the cards with Ray Winstone who did his first ever acting role in it in the 70s which i am hoping will come to fruition. I have even been on Sweeney location tours with likeminded fans where some have E-type Jags, Granadas and other cars from the series which we use to drive to various locations mainly in West London where most of the location filming was done. I am a Sweeney anorak. :D

I would say that in 1977 you were talking about £8-10 for a working flat session, where it was one cum and you are out, if it went on for more than 20 minutes the maid would be knocking on the door.

They havent really changed at all...

If you look up some escorts sites in the interenet archive....

http://www.archive.org/

The rates pages still show about 120 an hour, 150 for london in 2002.

anyone remember scandal babes http://replay.web.archive.org/20020717121040/http://www.scandalbabes.co.uk/gallery.htm

My experience was that in the '90s the standard "Sport" advertised flat was £50-60. Not time defined, one cum & finish, and it was often an un-admitted tussle between my self control and her determination to get me off as quick as possible.

Within that format there were some great times to be had when you found someone who was in the mood to play and you suited each other; but very hit or miss.

Anyone remember Pamella Bordes from the late 80's? Ex Miss India, Pamella was then a stunning high class escort whose liaisons with various public figures kept the press very busy once word got out. She charged £500-£800 a night back then apparently. Here in 2011 an overnight with an equally stunning asian from Olina/Asiansupermodel etc will set you back £1000.

Using the inflation calculator below, £1000 today equates to £507 in 1989 meaning the price of this service hasn't changed drastically in real terms over the years.
