Walking round Soho on Sat night I was really kind of amazed that the once thriving sexual atmosphere as all but since disappeared. I know they had a big clean up few years ago but its just lost that edge.

Oh I don't know, I think to a degree it still has a seedy sexual edge.

Ditto. Judging by the amount of gay bars full of people out on the prowl I'd say it's seediness is still alive and well :)

Oh god no! I didn't mean to imply that gay bars are seedy! Grr, misphrase. A few friends of mine like to hang out in then area solely to get a quick shag in the nearby vicinity, and from the stories they tell me they're not alone in their activities. There's a subculture of seediness which I myself have experienced :)

Sorry, I really did word that badly. Slap on the wrist for me.

I havent punted in Soho for years but do buy porn their on occassion and always find it seedy which i like. I came out of one shop and walked round the corner to see a guy shagging this oldish woman with another guy watching with the action happening literally on the pavement. I was in a hurry to get home to view my purchases so didnt hang about to watch. :)

Soho's reputation was in later years more based on its past than its present, not least because Westminster City Council tried cleaning it up a few years ago, and charging very high licence fees to those clubs & shops that it could not get rid of. Clip joints parting you from your money in exchange for very little are more likely to be encountered now.

Agreed, there are a mere handful of sexshops/adult book shops and it is very different to 20 or 30 years ago. The council licence fees were something like £12,000 upwards. Also, with so much porn and information about punting freely available on the web, there's not much need to have a specific red light district for punting when it's common in so many places. Unless of course you like your 15 minute walk ups, which is my idea of hell.

Interesting point. It is somewhat comforting that it is probably the free market & the rise of the sex industry in other areas/formats that is responsible for the changing face of Soho & not government intervention.

I agree that it still has a seedy edge, especially if we don't compare it too much to what it used to be like, which some of us might be too young to remember anyway.

For example there are the walkups, the shops, the remaining clip joints, and you can still be approached by a fake pro (scammer) on the street just as I was 25 years when I first went as a wide-eyed teenager! (I'd be curious to know if an approach on the street along the lines of 'looking for a girl, love' has EVER ended up in a sexual encounter!).

And then there is the newer element which is the Chinese massage places - surely more preferable to the excessive number of clip joints there used to be.

Just out of interest, when do people think was Soho at its seediest height? I first went in the mid-80s so can't compare to before then.

Tisbury Court must be the sleaziest alleyway in Soho. But even Tisbury Court is changing. It's still got the only remaining peep show in Soho but Soho Live Girls has closed down. Soho Live Girls was a clip joint and maybe the last one so now I think the only place where you will get 'clipped' is in the barber shop next door.

Glad to hear regarding the clipping, its only taken absolute decades including many years with CCTV to eradicate clip joints.

Sadly clipping on the street by filth still happens as two threads i have read on here this year showed. :)

Does anyone know/remember the Pink Geranium in Soho?

EDIT: No That's a restaurant in Cambridge, maybe it was The pink Flamingo.. it was a seedy place up some stairs. Had a put up bar in the corner, lots of dodgy characters about...

There's still a little frisson, though I wasn't around 30 years ago so I have nothing to compare it with. You have to remember towns and cities in general are becoming more homogenised and bland.

I embarked on my first adventure to Soho about 18 months ago in search of a super strong strap on harness with amazing out of this world attachments and to be honest I was a little disappointed. I had expected to be happily assaulted at every turn with sex shops and all kinds of in your face seedy sexual happenings

The first sex shop I found was ann summers which pretty much sealed the deal on my guttedness as it wasnt even as good as the one in MK!

I found it to be full of eateries although I did notice all the video shops and darkened entrances/locked doors with the promise of erotic cinema...mostly gay which is fine if you happen to be so. There was no one beckoning or trying to entice me into said darkened alley's or doorway's with the promise of naughty things to be discovered ( and probably avoided) within...and to attempt to corrupt me even further.

I did end up in DV8 though (fabulous shop) so it wasnt a wasted trip, I finally found a sex shop full of fascinating sexual weapons of mass pleasure in the end :D

I am guessing that it is possibly a place that comes alive at night B)

The Soho of my imagination just isnt there though so I left with that particular bubble having lost its shine. Perhaps if I had made that trip when a lot younger that beckoning finger would have appeared and the hidden world of seediness would have opened its door's B)

I will probably head that way when hungry though...xxx

I thought DV8 is a gay shop. Have you been to the peep show in Tisbury Court? I went there on Monday and there was a beautiful black woman in there, very dark skin and full breasts. There used to be many more peep shows in Soho. I went to them in the 80s. You could put a £5 note through a hole and the woman would use dildos or fingers.

I went to a few in the 80s, used to smell of spunk and have sticky spunk stained tissues on the floor, seedy but a laugh at the time. :)

DV8 is indeed a gay shop, and I loved every minute of it downstairs checking out all the HUUUGE dildo's and harness's. I did offer strap-on and anal play plus other mildly fetish service's when I was a wg hence my foray to soho in the first place in search of unusual toys and contraptions that would make my guy's go ...ooo wow lol, and of course, a new decent strap-on harness...if the gay guy's cant stock a good harness for some thing arse bound who on earth can....

No I didnt go to a peep show, wouldnt even have known where to look although it would be a giggle and an experience.x

This shop used to be owned by a gay man called Clayton Littlewood. It was a clothing shop then. He wrote a book about all the characters he knew in Soho. It's very interesting.

Soho was very different when I discovered it in the early to mid nineties. There were a lot more clip joints around, but also walk ups, seedy sex shops and peep shows as well - some of which where hand relief was on offer too. Maybe it was because I was young, but it all felt much more exciting and shocking than it is today. The clip joints needed to go, obviously, but it's a shame that so much of the seedier side has been closed down, especially as there's nowhere quite like it anywhere else in the country.
