Is It Possible To Divide Up Viagra Tablets?

31 posts in this topic

I'm sure someone out there knows the answer to this!

If, for example, you have a 100mg tablet then is it possible to halve or quarter it to make two 50mg doses or four 25mg doses?

Will the tablet fragments work as well as an actual 25mg or 50mg tablet?

And just how easy to break up are they anyway? :)

Yes - get a pill cutter for a pound or so from the pharmacy.

Yes it is very easy. I get the big blue 100 mg tablets and cut them in two, as 50 mg works fine for me.

A pair of scirrors works fine giving a clean cut with two equal halves. I find it best to cut them close to the fulcrum of the scissors so that the scissors bite in bit by bit. If you position the tablet near the tips then it is more prone to breaking in one fell swoop, with more force needed, and risking a less clean break. At least that's my theory. I keep the resultant bits + any small break-off pieces in a small clear plastic bag (easy to select a few bits to make up 50% of a tablet), or even return them to the original package if the cuts are very clean, as they mostly are.

At a pinch a small pen knife could also be used. As a field emergency.

Hope this helps,

Des.

That sounds like a good idea - thank you!

I had a hell of a job finding one a couple of weeks ago, visited 4 pharmacies with no luck but Tesco pharmacy had them in stock for £2.25. You could always order the Rolls Royce of pillcutters from here though for $59.00 (but that does include delivery  ):

Available for Cialis and Levitra too.

There are loads on eBay for a couple of quid delivered too.

Thanks, DG, do the Tesco Value cutters work OK with the hard tablets?

Yes , Yes and Yes Really ......and then No

I'm using Levitra ( Due to effects of Atenolol -Beta Blocker blood Pressure reduction treatment- reduce your BP .. its screws up your hydralics !! very effectively!!)

Levitra come in 5 10 and 20 mg tablet form ... ( and before you start thinking Aha .. A 100 Mgs Viagra must be "Better" !! You'd be wrong !! ...20 mg levitra tablet is equivialnt to a 100mgs Viagra tablet .....So a 5mgsLevitra is simlar to a 25mgs Viagra ) .. and they are a pig to break - they are coated in something .. a film I think ..

So, i use a pill cutter bought from the local Chemist and chop my 5mgs tablets up into half ...and am about to experiment with quarters ........in an endevour to reduce side effects.............. which for me is Red & I mean Red face !! and dehydration.

Works fine, Cut halves keep fine and don't deteriorate .......and halving the tablet ............gives you more bangs for your Buck ...............which I am heavily in favour of !!

Cheers, badger. Viagra tablets are film-coated as well, I think. I'm hoping I won't need a high dose to do the trick, which will hopefully minimise any side-effects.

Interesting! People who go to the pharmacy usually expect the NHS to pay for their drugs: I was in a vet's shop the other day, where all drugs are charged for ( + VAT) and the pill cutter was a US import, and priced at £4-50!

and can I add , don't think that by taking a double dose i.e. 2x 20mg will give you a double longer lasting erection for the rest of the week, that doesn't work. I have tried it, but you do seem to get double the side effects, well lasting longer. Personally ,I wouldn't bother cutting any up just take the full tablet.

But like all drugs ,the more you take the less effect. So don't worry you wont be walking on 3 legs.

Don't worry, my plan is to take as little as I need for the drug to have an effect while (hopefully) minimising the side-effects. The reason I'm interested in cutting pills is because there seems to be very little difference in price between 25mg and 100mg tablets, so quartering a 100mg pill should save quite a lot of money!

Noted.

Drinking at least half a pint of water with the tablet seems to be recommended too.

I have 20mg genuine Levitra but as I haven't punted with one yet I had a "solo run" with half a tablet. Planning to try a quarter soon ie 5mg. Anything smaller would perhaps be best crushed and divided like the druggies do on TV with a blade. Tesco do crushers too!

I only asked for 20mg tabs because I knew I was going to split them. I don't have problems flying solo but the Levitra adds something extra. I did flush badly and felt "chesty" then had a bad headache.

Mine cut quite easily but the film coating prevented a complete break. Also, even though the tab was perfectly positioned it wasn't divided equally so I had to carve a little bit off the large piece. I think a stanley knife or even a very sharp carving knife might do just as well if you have a good eye and steady hand. Will try next time.

I don't see how the $59 unit is worth it's money unless it really can do perfect faultless cuts. Don't forget duty and VAT if you decide to shell out though.

I'm not too sure that a Pharmacist would recommend cutting tablets in this way. There is no guarantee that each half, or quarter, would contain the same proportion of the active ingredient.

The druggie method works I've found. Wrap the equal amounts of powder in a cig rolling paper and then swallow it whole. The paper is digested quite quickly. (That's another druggie trick from those that do mushrooms  )

Alternatively use a jewellery scale that weighs down to .01gm to check the pieces are equal size after using a pill cutter. If not adjust accordingly.

Try peeling the blue film off V tablets before cutting - sometimes that works better. peel carefully with a sharp stanley knife.

$59 not worth it IMHO - a stanley knife and a steady hand works just as well if not better.

That's a good point, paul, after all the tablet's aren't solid blocks of Viagra. I've also just read that pills are sometimes film-coated to ensure they don't dissolve until after they've moved from the stomach to the intestines, so maybe cutting them would affect that.

are people having a laugh? 100mg viagra tablets are easily broken in half by hand - whether the result has 50/50mg or 45/55 or whatever is bloody irrelevant - the end result will be exactly the same

The Pharmacist at Lloyds said it was OK to split my Levitra, he just didn't have a splitter in stock. The mix for the tablets is a bulk mix and then compressed into thousands or millions of tablets. As such the whole mix has to be uniform to ensure each tablet is the correct dose. The idea of one half containing more active ingredient would require each tablet being measured and mixed individually. I had to adjust my Levitra because the split was badly off centre. Will just try a stanley blade next time.

Also, my mother was told by her GP to get a pill splitter for one of her prescription drugs as she was already taking the lowest manufactured dose and the GP wanted to reduce it.

I just bite a bit off. One 100mg tablet = 3 doses, sometimes with long gaps between. Never a problem.

I wonder what my other half would start thinking if she found these?:

I doubt her first thought would be Viagra or Levitra and I'm not a jeweler either!

With my trusty Swiss Army knife, I can get down to 1/8th with a certain degree of equality in size between the pieces, and consistancy of success.

I find 1/8th works for me, without the usual headache. If I feel my face going red, and stirring amidships after 15 minutes, I know that sufficient has been taken.

Are you Clark Kent? ;)

Seriously though, I know that some people seem to be able to bite chunks off the pills but I'd rather not risk my teeth.

:D

This is the one I use and have recommended to friends and family http://www.ebay.co.u...a#ht_2218wt_907 £1.19 plus 1.45 P&P.

I'll definitely give that one a try. They sell a lot of other "interesting" products: temporary fillings, UN-approved clinical waste bags, surgical markers - oh, my!

Thanks to everyone for all your comments and advice, I really appreciate it.
