Pamela Stephenson Connolly vs Julie Bindel - Prostitution: sex, lies and exploitation

Its a shame that the majority of Grauniad responses were so typical of its readership even though, I suppose, that is to be expected.

Actually, I thought it looked as if Guardian readers have regressed. They had been making progress over the last few months.

Bindel is such a twat! She refers to what she says is "...his obvious belief that sex is a right - something that all men are automatically entitled to." I don't see that at all in the letter to which she refers:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/sep/11/sexual-healing-prostitution-brothels

I see a guy who's feeling "...afraid I'd be a failure as a husband" and asking for advice and help.

Bindel attempts to hijack this letter, and Stephenson Connolly's reply, to continue to trundle out her tedious insistence that all prostitution is evil and all men are to blame. The more I read of her pronouncements, the more I realise she lives in a fantasy world! What utter shite!

I agree with you whoreheartedly! This women is an abomination, I used to think I was a feminist but these days I'd rather say I was an equalist. She brings shame on the feminist cause with her man hating and separatist loony ideas.

Olivia-'whoreheartedly' I love it. I always say that I'm a humanist!

Bindel just doesn't realise that in her battering ram style of a one way street production, she just pushes her target audience further away. She insults our choice, and addresses us as if we have no choice in our lives. Not a great way to get me/us on her side.

A brilliant point imo.

Instead of compartmentalising everyone into their own special interest niche, at last a concept that is potentially open to everyone. Excellent.

She refers to what she says is "...his obvious belief that sex is a right - something that all men are automatically entitled to."

Ms Bindel generally works this into her assertions. It is a straw man she can then tear down and it saves her the trouble of actually debating what was said. Why the Guardian continues to pay her for this sloppy sort of jouralism and debate is a mystery, as is the question of why they took down links, posted by someone called Robbo, to a BBC article dissecting her more extrem views.

I guess that ms Bindel also regards men as direct rivals to her right to access to women's bodies

Indeed, so may lesbians are totally left wing in their views, I wonder why?

Has anyone suggested she's doing it wrong?

I.M.H.O. Ive always found 24crt Lesbians to be quite eclectic in their world views.

I had put it down to being different, and having experienced the often unwarrented negative reaction of society to any alternative way of making your way through life, Lesbians, like others who are maginalised, can more easily accepted differences around them.

Either that or the checked lumberjack shirts they all seen to wear make them feel like proper cradle to the grave Labout voting scewfix customers.

What annoys me most about Bindel is that she puts her name, and more importantly Uni status, to the shoddy 'research' cobbled together by Poppycock.

This gives it, to the untutored eye, a patina of credibility which is wholly undeserved because it is not subject to the usual academic controls over quality. Nor would it bear any such scrutiny as the academics who chose to rubbish it could confirm.

I'm not sure where this places her with her own University. As a presumably-tenured academic she is of course free to write whatever drivel the Grauniad chooses to print. However she has put her name, and Uni status, to a paper described as 'research' that does not expressly dissociate the Uni from it. When the piece is subsequently demolished by other academics, as happened in this case, would that imply that she has damaged her own Uni's good research reputation? Unis are famously tolerant of mavericks but I'm guessing that fellow faculty members might be embarrassed.

Quite simple really. Julie Bindel herself states that she has never made any claim to being an academic; in response to the academic critique of the "Big Brothel" report, preferring to describe herself as a journalist & campaigner.

The university research centre, of which she forms a part, was in reality, set up by Harriet Harman, with the sole purpose of providing "research" that would support her pre-existing stances on any given issue (one of its first such reports was produced with the aim of proving Ms Harman's belief that men were of no real use to a family & should make no contribution to the raising of children). Therefore Bindel's "research": which is never submitted to the normal peer review process & regularly criticised on the grounds of methodology & ethics, bias & for the misrepresenting its own findings, fits perfectly into the criteria for which Government funding was provided.

Hmmm - I knew about the Poppycock scam. I didn't realise that there was a similar one involving a research centre operating under the auspices of a university. So the process is as follows?

Harpy has a prejudice - directs taxpayer funds to a non-govt org with brief to produce right result - org produces propaganda, sorry 'research' - legislative process begins. Abuse of power and misuse of taxpayer funds in personal quest to ruin men's lives. Hateful beyond belief.

Also find it difficult to believe that a Uni would be so desperate or stoop so low. Devalues such name for real research as they may have.

But it does resolve the paradox of an academic putting her name to Poppycock propaganda, if she isn't one.

Known in the trade as "The Government".

Universities, like certain ladies, tend to have a price.....
