Threat To Anonymity From Facebook

16 posts in this topic

Maybe this has been discussed before, but I think it's worth bringing up and it's very much on topic.

I was playing with the facebook app on my phone, and clicked on "find friends". Now on the normal website it will suggest people who are friends with people you already know i.e. You're friends with dave and Alan and Michael and it recommends Simon since he's friends with all 3 as well.

BUT...on your smartphone it searches your phonebook....I just had mine recommend my Landlady...and bunnies of London. It doesn't matter if you've put bunnies' number as "John" - it just looks at the number. Now the REALLY worrying bit...I'm single so no one else uses my phone, so there's nothing to worry about is there?

Well the same problem exists in reverse...I ring up an agency or indy or whoever, and simply by adding my number to their phonebook they can get my real name...even though my number would not be visible to them as they're not friends with me on facebook...but they now know who I am. Combined with my unusual surname it wouldn't be too hard to track me down.

Safe to say I'll be removing my phone number from facebook shortly!!

That is why we quickly abandoned the idea of a House of Divine Facebook page.

It also relates email addresses. Obviously I use a different email address for work than my 'real' one, but even then FB sneakily reads your email contacts and suggests friends from your contact, I'm always getting random men I've shagged (from my pre escort, single, slutty days) popping up as 'someone you know'. I think it is yet another reason to keep real life and punting/escorting life totally separate and to be very careful with Facebook!

Nothing is ever completely secure in the world of electronic communication. When it comes to punting, separation of functionality (and identity) is the order of the day. As for Facebook, or any other social networking applications, Just Say No!

I had to let an escort know that her working number was linked to her personal Facebook because of this.

Yet another reason to have a PunterSim...

It sure is. A paid for in cash PAYG dedicated punting phone or sim is all i require, simple and anoynmous for my punting as i like it. :)

I only use Facebook to keep in touch with people and don't put anything too personal on there. I certainly wouldn't put my phone number or address on there.

At my Uni it is considered a funny game amongst the more technical minded to hack each others Facebook profiles and change details. It's called getting "Facebook Raped". A well known hacker site used to have "Facebook Friday" where every friday they'd hack accounts and post screen shots of what they'd done.

Unsecure is an understatement for Facebook.

Had a couple of scares with FB - and Im really really careful ! so you have to watch - in this game you end up with loads of email accounts - long story and all but Ill change an email and use a fresh one of contacting as people can and do search on telephone numbers and emails. I always always use number witheld and if the girl wont pick up then Ill use the hobby phone I keep a check by googleing that number every now and then and I keep a total separation on the hobby and real identity as much as I can.

You never ever know what is in the future and whos paths will cross. Bumped into a girl who used to work in a sauna in normal life and we both recognized each other but in the situation kept distance. Did however manage to have a quick natter while having a smoke... life gone past an all that. Did have a memory session thou a few weeks later but dangerous ground lol

Thirded. I'm amazed that people use their main/work phones for punting when Pay as you Go SIM cards are so cheap and anonymous.

Whatever you do online - you always leave a trail and social networking will be the undoing of many. Facebook is anathema to me. Protecting yourself is very important and I'm always surprised at just what some people choose to reveal about themselves online. I'm pretty good. If I do a vanity search it's buried pretty deeply and only in a work context as I keep 'my-real-self' distanced from any online activity. My worst nightmare would be the words: Remember me?

Imagine the words, "remember me?' accompanied by a picture of said person holding a child bearing a resemblance to your goodself.

Another reason why I'm glad I'm not on Facebook.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse...
