My local paper still had them the last time i looked although thats a few months ago now, it depends on the area but certainly many have stopped running them now. I recall it first being mentioned soon after i joined so late 2008. :)

We can still advertise on the paper but we cannot show our url, or have the opening and closing times and location at the same time. Which doesn't really make sense.

I would agree - recollect it being about 2-3 years ago

I'd have said about 4 - 5 years ago. They are creeping back into some papers now but are a good deal more discreet. Bring them all back if it keeps the circulation figures up.

About 2008. It was all purely voluntary. As I recall the Newsquest Group was one of the first to stop advertising. Lots of papers still continued advertising though.

Ireland made such advertising illegal in 1994.

Newsquest kept the girls ads, just moved them to chatlines, until approx 2.5 months ago pulled them all together

Johnstone Press banned personal ads in all of their newspapers 4 or 5 years ago under pressure from the then government. Unfortunately that's just about every local rag from Land's End to John O'Groats

Ah - you mean Johnston Press plc shares currently trading at 5p; £357 million in debt; having to approach their lenders in Jan 2012 for refinancing and advertising revenue down by 8%?

As I understand it, the Sheffield Star, who were taking in c £750,000 per annum in revenue from massage parlours/escort agencies/independents and the like before their ban actually have reappraised the situation and approached all previous advertisers asking them to readvertise (obviously nothing too explicit) - however it was too late and as I understood a posting made elsewhere the advertisers had found other places to advertise (Ad-Mag for example) and the Johnston's Press overtures were in vain.

Still in my local papers. Loads of them in fact. Sauna's are all in there as well. The law is a complete ass in this respect.

Not a legal problem, just political pressure. My local rag has always had loads, still does.

There are two local papers in my town. One banned these ads a couple of years back the other didn't. As a result the amount of ads in the other one saw a significant increase in ads. Although that amount has reduced a bit, it still carries about half a page worth each week.

There is no law. Harriet Harman and Vernon Coaker tried to put the frighteners on newspapers to stop publishing these ads.

When it's 3.00 am I'm feeling randy and I've run out of ideas the local rag has turned up a few lifesavers, and a few horrors.
