A Visit To The Sti (gum) Clinic

24 posts in this topic

As a diversion from our normal activities, a British colleague suggested we visit an civilian STI clinic.

Last time I did this, it was the "an umbrella in the urethra", and ws a horrible experience, the nurse was obviously a sufferer or syphilis or worse.

This was mostly painless - I commend the NHS and their confidentiality. It is mostly confidential in the US, but in certain jobs, you have to disclose use of certain drugs and antibiotics, and submit to random drug testing.

The visit.

They give you a unique random number

You are interviewed by clerical

Then you see the nurse, and maybe a doctor.

You can give a false name

They txt you the results.

They give away lots of drugs

I told them I might be in theater soon, and they gave me some drugs for later.

I had the full works test

5 stars

As expected I came up clean, after 7 days.

I can see potential abuse, someone visits regularly , get drugs and sells on ebay.

Total visit time 1 hour 30 mins.

You can also book an appointment slot.

antibiotics, canestan, morphine etc

You can buy canestan in Boots!

And have never heard of a GUM clinic giving out morphine willy nilly.

You wouldn't get ANY drugs WITHOUT a diagnosis! Yes, somebody could shake their Clap-riddled self around every GUM clinic in Blighty & sell the cheap, basic antibiotics on the Net, but the cost would outweigh any returns.

I have never been given any drugs as i havent ever caught anything, they shouldnt be giving anyone any without them actually requiring them as part of their treatment. If you know different i would advise informing the hospital or the health watchdog as thats valuable public funds being squandered.

If they issue drugs, you have to take them there and then. Current practices are injections for most as the diseases are becoming resistant to the tablet anti-biotics. Still get free condoms though.

Twice on visits to the GUM clinic on the advice of a WG who suggested it after she was diagnosed with chlamydia. Evidently it's quite diificult ot detct and con confirm in men, (going back 6 to 8 eight years), both times I was given a course of amoxicillin to take as a precaution on the spot before any results could have been attained.

The OP says he told them he might be in theater later so they gave him some drugs for later. Sounds incredible to me and Morphine is a controlled drug which a Doctor cant simply willy nilly hand over without the proper procedures beng followed which includes a full diagnosis. Not following these procedures is negligent and possibly criminal with such a drug following the misuse of drugs regulations.

Sorry, skimmed over that bit, I just am stunned that this would really happen in the NHS, does sound totally incredible (incredulous), and surely it is highly unlikely that a GUM clinic would have morphine on hand *what for)? Furthermore, lets say you were diagnosed with chlamydia or something that needed antibiotics, and you were given them, surely you would want to actually take them so that you get rid of your STD instead of selling them? Confused....

The OPs tested negative so didnt require any drugs, according to him they just gave some to him after he mentioned the theater, including Morphine i assume which he mentions in a subsequent post. His someone visits regularly gets drugs then sells on Ebay could never be guaranteed to happen, as some of us have said you dont just get given drugs without you medically needing them, its negligent to be given them without you having a diagnosis. Mike was given Amoxicillin somehow without a diagnosis which seems odd as well to me but its not Morphine which is a serious drug that can easily kill you if you misuse it and is controlled which means if they did have it at the GUM it would be locked away and simply shouldnt be given to anyone unless their medical need means they need it, forms must be filled out to account for such a drug. So the whole thing sounds very strange to me. :)

Amoxicillin seems to be a fairly 'covers most bases anti-biotic', the tests for Chlamydia on men are evidently normally inconclusive, I have this from a nurse at GUM clinics, and a friend who's a nurse specialising in teenage sexual health, (definintely not my age group). They give it to men who say they may have got Chlamdia because the GUM may probably never know whether they have it or not, so it's a belt and braces approach. As for getting Morphine I don't know why they would prescribe it for a STD, I must ask them for some, I got it when I had heart attack and subsequently with related problems, I can see why people become addicts.

Amoxicillin is a cheap, basic antibiotic. It'd cost more to post than buy.

Precisely what I meant, as opposed to confused. xxx

I have a feeling that the OPs experience wasn't with the NHS GUM clinic but possibly overseas. Re-read the original posting carefully - it just doesn't add up for a NHS clinic.

I don't believe a word of it. You will be given antibiotics if you have been in contact with somebody with a STD and usually you will have to take it in front of the staff but you certainly do not get it otherwise. As for Morphine being given out, what a load of rubbish to put it bluntly.

No self respecting doctor in their right mind would give away antibiotics without just cause. It is not done. If you take too many courses in a the span of a year you become immune to them to begin with.

As for morphine it is hard enough to get this drug when you are in agony let alone just dished out. I was given it last year but that was when I was an inpatient and it was dispensed at the regular time intervals and would not even bring it forward half hour earlier. As someone who has taken it over the years I can only assume that you write for Enid Blyton or Disney as coming from someone with medical conditions morphine or morphine based drugs for that matter are near on impossible to get on a prescription and are only dispensed to treat certain illnesses related with pains. Paracetamol is the favourite by the medical profession as many need to be taken with meals.

From visiting a GUM clinic last year I had to psuh to get vaccinations against certain STD's, I was given advice and offered contraception, which I delined.

Even clinics in Amsterdam do not operate in this manner!!

I can assure you that when I went to the GUM clinics at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, Hope Hospital in Salford and Burnley General Hospital I was given Amoxicillin when I told them that my partner had been found to have Chlamydia. They also tested me, however it took a week or two to get the results, eventually I was told I'd been found to be clear but that it was very difficult to be sure with Chlamydia in men that was the reason they precribed me the course of Amoxicillin at the time of testing.

Sorry Mike, I was not replying to you but to the OP :)

You just confirmed what I said that you will get antibiotics if you have been in contact with somebody with a STD.

Hi Pia we're broadly in agreement but they just gave me a course of them to take, I didn't have to take them in front of them, like you I can't see them handing out morphine so casually.

It certainly doesnt add up but he commends the NHS which i read as him saying it was them he went through rather than comparing them to a foreign country or a private clinic he doesnt name. The process he mentions is exactly the same as a NHS GUM as well. The Morphine listed though does make me think you could be right here however, i like others dont believe this would be just given out in the UK NHS or not.

They didn't give me any morphine, but quite a few types on antibiotics for just in case. , but they said could supply strong pain killers if required, and signed off by a doctor or I guess a corpsman.

So why did you say they gave you morphine in your earlier post?
