Connard?

3 posts in this topic

"No one is quite sure what Melenchon really wants. Some say he is a bully and a narcissist, out to provoke.

Certainly he can come across as an ugly character.

He called me a "connard de journaliste" (a vulgar expression of abuse), merely for asking a question he did not like."

Can someone, whose French is more "courant" than mine, tell me how I should translate "connard" when the BBC's correspondent can't or won't?

"Con" I've always understood to fit where in English one would use "cunt", as a term of abuse, so, is "connard", en effet, the same, or what?

It's not as strong as calling someone a cunt. My preferred online dictionary/forum resource gives a whole selection of terms including asshole, jerk, bugger, dick, schmuck, fucker and "offensive stupid bastard". A couple of posters, comparing "connard" with "enculé", conclude that "connard = asshole; enculé = motherfucker".

Nice to know that French remains the language of love, isn't it?
