"Andrea did not deserve to be murdered..." - Det Ch Insp Adam Hibbert

Terrible that he feels that needs to be said - but he's right, given some of the press reactions to the Ipswich murders, for example.

It should also go without saying that anyone who is reading Punternet who has any information that could help the Police in this matter should not hesitate to either get in touch with the Police directly or via Crimestoppers http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/

I'm 100% in agreement with you Ghengis, I don't want to appear that I am hi-jacking or diverting this thread but wouldn't a 'crack down' as appears to be advocated at the moment make it less likely for punters with useful information to come forward?

Mike,

I do agree a crack down would make it less likely for punters to come forward.

However any punter with info on this, that uses a crack down as an excuse not to come forward, needs to closely examine their own conscience.

Let us all hope that the community acts maturely and sensibly and helps the police in whatever way possible.

It is such a shame that an extremely intelligent woman had to resort to taking men home, when she could have been in some form of alliance with other sex workers.

Last year, I was coming out of the Jury Inn Hotel in Brighton after a booking, and I saw another escort standing outside with a man, having a heated discussion. I went across to my car then heard her scream, I turned he had pushed her against the wall outside the hotel and was holding a knife to her, and she was calling him `Tel' and then trying to appease him. Within seconds, a car parked near them had its engine revved and the guy dragged her over to it and they sped off. This happened in seconds.

I never reported it, I KNOW I should have, but I just presumed the police would have no interest in a `domestic' between an escort and what was presumably her pimp.

I am not saying this is related to this tragic murder case, but it has made me think....

wow, that's in bad taste for a police officer.

NO ONE deserves to die, not a WG, not a Philosophy graduate, not a beggar. I'm stunned by what is implicit in Det. Ch. Insp. Hibbert's remark.

"Andrea Waddell, who had a masters degree but worked as a prostitute,"

Why the "but"?

A masters degree and working as an escort!

They make it sound as if most prostitutes are unfortunates with little or no education.

Its insulting to Andreas right to choose and insulting to every prostitute whos ever worked hard for her education.

Its shows more about Andreas personality and how wide her horizons were than it does about our shallow, narrowminded society which is force fed stereotypical bullshite by the press and politicians.

Sympathies.

His comment seems to have been removed, it's a real shame that they've allowed a bunch of other offensive comments to stand and allow the pig ignorant bigots to vote them up by hundreds of votes.

They wouldn't stand for people using the Nig*** word if the victim was black, or the Fag*** word if the victim was gay, or the idea that a rape victim deserved it because she went out at night in mini skirt.

What's seems odd is that if they want punters to come forward how likely is this with a graduation photo and not details of where/how she worked. Though on the other hand I suppose the Police want to create a positive impression with the media, a rock and hard places comes to mind.

I think you're being unfair on him, I think it's perceptive that he recognises the problem and has challenged it straight away. The fact is a lot of people will care less because she was a prostitute. You only have to look at some of the comments on the DM story suggesting she deserved it because she was just a prostitute.

Don't feel guilty about it, it is so common it has a name; the bystander syndrome. Most people would do the same because they assume others are better able to deal with the situation.

If you know about it in advance, you can know how to deal with similar situations. Engage with the situation, step forward, identify allies and explicitly engaged them in the situation, tell people you call the police/ambulance etc, you do this, you stop that. etc.

It really makes my blood boil the way some people think of WGs as subhuman.

Looking at the press coverage, I also feel very sorry for her family, they have a lot to deal with at present and the press seems hell bent on ensuring all the "facts" are available.

Twas ever so. Even the Beeb loves to run breathless follow-ups to salacious stories on BBC World. I watched it regularly while in Asia recently and found it even more offensive than Murdoch's Star News, the other 24-hour news channel where I was staying. Always with a bit of smirk and innuendo. They're more sober here in the mother country, where we pay a licence fee to support them.:o

The Daily mail really are scum.

Just the Daily Mail?

I think the press show us there are no restraints on how far they will go to stir up reinforce stereotypes in persuit of papers sold and advertising revenues gained.

Perhaps the most glaring example was the s*n newspaper after Hilsborough.

The press always hammer minorities without a voice for their own ends.

Absolutely ! Andrea's family have an enormous amount to deal with at the moment and papers like the Mail (and truth be told, us mugs who buy them) just feed off their misery. My heart goes out to them and I seriously hope that the police find the scum who are responsible.

Wouldn't it be wise now to end discussion since I thought anything to do with transexuals was off topic?

As I read the reports this lady had "gender realignment" which means that she is officially a woman. The key issue here is nothing to do with this; it is do with violence against working girls and the public perception of paid sex encounters.
