Louis Theroux On Prostitution

27 posts in this topic

Interesting comment from Louis Theroux in an article in this week's Radio Times (in the print edition only as far as I can see):-

Theroux reflects that when filming a legal Nevada brothel he witnessed tender, long-standing relationships between hookers and their clients. "It is strange to me that in the porn industry they look askance at prostitution, because I can see a much better case for the legalisation of prostitution than pornography. It seems a more humane profession."

Wasnt there a scene where the girl, as she lifted her skirt, and was commando, asked if this was what he was looking for?

Louis cool in my book, I would have filled my boots as well, all for the sake of good investigative journalism

I thought the programme on porn was good too. I'm surprised some people in the thread dislike him so much.

I think his faux naivete is a great way of getting people to open up to him and hoist themselves by their own petards, so to speak!

The ones he did on both the Neo-Nazis and Westboro church are great examples of this.

I like Louis, I find him very engaging.

I thought it was excellent program, but then I am very partial to LT. :-).

It was particularly interested when he re-visited guys which he met on his previous program 15 years ago "Weird Weekends on Porn" and hear how theirs outlook changed.

He of course who could not visit John Dough from previous program as he topped himself in 2006.(who was quite an acclaimed male porn star, according to AVN, and was one of the main performers in the cult porn film "Latex", as well as hundreds of others). He did visited his wife, (ex porn star also), who have not re-married since. I actually was surprised she agreed to this filming, and what she said was quite enlightening. (at least for me).

I love his style of interview, very naive in places, but he does to tend to get out something deep from people, which they never maybe admit, or know about themselves.

Yes, I agree.

It doesn't matter how obnoxious people are, he manages to appear as though he has no agenda, likes them and is interested in them and most people will open up with that sort of approach rather than a confrontational one.

As well as the porn industry I have a vague memory that LT also done a programme about prostitution/brothels in the US. Does anyone remember that or know wether he will be doing a revisit programme ?

thats a redundant phrase as it appears from many websites that many porn 'stars' work as escorts, and probably the most successful may earn

far more from selling their bodies than porn films, theres a you tube vid ive seen where Ava Devine says she went into porn in order

to charge more as a hooker !! our latest British porn angel, Gemma Massey is on photogirls at £1000 per hour !!!

Can't remember who but one porn actress when interviewed said she did porn so as to be able to attract more money in her career as an exotic dancer.

Yes, IIRC it was to the Crazy Horse brothel, and some of the girls were very insistent that he try their wares!

I saw the porn industry re-visted too, san pornando valley he called it lol. Tommy gun ahh I felt bad for the guy. The guy doing the Iron man couples porn looked like he wanted to deck Louis at one point when he said that surely what he churns out now is boring in comparison to the ass stretching type porn he used to produce.

Have to say though that sometimes I do think, you already know the answer to that question, you just want to watch someone squirm a bit. I dont think he is naive at all, I think he is a wind up merchant with a deadpan face/over serious deliberate expression..he never looks shocked lol. Bless x

He always comes over as rather intolerant to me. The faux naivete is wearing.

+1

And I think the proof of this is the ease with which he can get people to open up to him. Mind you, many of his guests are seriously nutty...

Couldn't quite put into words why I like LT's interviewing style, but Sarita has hit the nail on the head. Thought the doc on the porn industry was excellent. Had to laugh at the lighting guy and the sound guy on one of the porn sets, paying more attention to the menus on their mobile phones than the two people having sex just out of shot, and also at LT's 'courtship-in-reverse' comment about the two novice performers, having sex first and then getting flirty with each other afterwards.
