Transporting Viagra Etc Through Uae

13 posts in this topic

Has anybody any experiences, please - positive or negative - of transporting Viagra (or Cialis or Levitra or generic equivalents of any of these) through the UAE, when in transit?

I gather they get rather upset about some drugs which are accepted elsewhere. I'm wondering whether these are likely to be a problem.

Thank you very much for your help.

I am not sure if this helps: a little over a year ago I bought at Abu Dhabi Duty Free shop in their pharmacy a generic Cialis (Snafi 20 mg, from Saudi Arabia I think) while in transit (!) from Asia to Europe, I did not enter the country. No problem there as nobody checked you when boarded the plane to Europe.

You specifically asked for "in transit". I don't know what the situation is when you enter the country, they may well get "upset" then but since they sell them at their own airport ... So imho you shouldn't have a problem.

Viagra and Cialis are prescribed medicines available on the NHS for treating ED following treatment for prostate cancer. (Prostate cancer sufferers can get these free of charge on prescription.). Somebody who has had prostate surgery could well have one of these drugs with them as part of their post op. recovery treatment and so would have a legit reason to take it with them.

I don't know, but if there are restrictions taking these drugs abroad, there may be some information about it from NHS direct. In any case they may be able to help, after all they won't know if you are taking them following prostate cancer surgery, or if you are buying them privately for sexual pleasure.

I went on holiday recently and had to avoid transiting through the middle east as some of the drugs I'm on are forbidden there, whether prescribed or not.

Had I been able to go there, I would have had to take a letter from my GP attesting that these were the drugs I was entitled to have. You have to do that for everything, even if you can buy the drug over the counter in the Middle East. It's not worth taking prescription drugs into that area without a prescription, the risk is too great as they take a very dim view of drugs.

Given that you can buy ED drugs pretty much everywhere, why bother to transport them?

Read years ago some guy got arrested with viagra. If you have a prescription carry it with you just in case. But you can buy viagra, cialis etc at all of the airport pharmacies in any event so why don't you just pick it up there?

I have a have a prescription and doctor's letter, and I've had no problem, so long as you proffer it first, and are willing to pay a $50 admin charge.

I am persuaded that there is a significant risk here that I don't need to take.

Thanks to all for your thoughts. This was a useful exercise.

The only medicines you should have problems with are opiates & possibly certain steroids. Most of the medicines you'd have problems with are on the Government's Controlled list & are generally locked in Pharmacy cabinets.

You can buy pretty much all medicines in the GCC, except those described above, but counterfeit pharmaceuticals are a bigger problem outside the EU. http://www.who.int/medicines/services/counterfeit/overview/en/

The Middle East is hardly the place to advise someone they 'should' be ok doing something.

The chances of getting caught are very low, however the penalty should you be caught is very high.

Forgive my ignorance.

It reads to me like one can buy these things in Dubai or in Dubai airport over the counter, but one cannot bring them into UAE having bought them elsewhere (but in UK they cannot be bought over the counter anyway).

Have I misunderstood?

You would be fine taking your own in. If in doubt, email the Embassy from a specially created account to check.

If you have a note from your doctor on headed paper (I.e you're entitled to them) and they're not on the banned list you can bring them in.
