Perception

Someone sent me this beautiful poem today...

Perception by Giovanna Gonzalez

I look in the mirror and see the face I wake up to every morning.

I see the face that others see, but the girl that others don’t.

Some may think that girl is intolerable, and out-spoken.

Others may think she is kind, opinionated, and witty.

We all have a perception of others in our own minds.

They say “Don’t judge a book by it’s covers.”

I am a book that is waiting to be opened and discovered.

I hear good things and bad things.

She is annoying, she is stupid.

She is chill, she is pretty.

Rumors are the worst, but you learn to ignore.

Some say I am promiscuous, some say I am the opposite.

They see a light eyed, brown haired girl.

Curvy body and appealing features.

Laughing all the time and always smiling is who I am.

I am down to earth and very understandable.

Problems and drawbacks are the last thing in my list.

I try to be nice, and I try to be me.

It got me thinking. Have you ever perceived a board member to be one way and when you have met them, found them to be totally different, or are you perceptive and can see past a forum board persona and see the real person?

Are many forum members different in real life or do they usually mirror the person you believe them to be?

Have you ever avoided meeting someone because of the way you perceived them to be or the perception of others?

This question goes to both the ladies and the gentleman

Interesting question indeed....

Would I avoid meeting someone due to perception....not at all....I like variety in my life and that includes the ladies so it is hard for me to exclude anyone from a potential meeting...and I also like to make my own mind up despite what is said, written or discussed by others (these have no bearings on my decision unless this happens to be information classed as "useful" in these forums)....

Now, being a hypocrite I will have to say there are some I would definitely never wish to meet LOL

As for being different in real life, I think I'm pretty much the same but "others" maybe will give a better insight so hard for me to answer a question about the real hero...what he likes, what he thinks, what he does, what drives him, his goals, his passions, his life....

I have found both all the WGs and punters i have met to be very nice people even those i thought were somewhat abrasive on here and with one particular WG who hasnt posted on here for a long time but came across as a big headed bragger found her to be pleasant as well which is what i suspected hence deciding to punt with her.

I wouldnt wish to meet a very small number of posters due to their views which i assume they believe though.

I now wish to punt anonymously so wont be meeting anymore WGs that i know post on here, but i daresay i will meet a poster punter here or their at a party sometime or other.

The best, nay, the only, way to view one's character in reality, is to ask someone else.

But we don't always like the answer.

"Daddy used to tell me, everything comes down to what they say about you when you're not around", as the Drive-By Truckers put it.

The posters I've met (all of them ladies) have been pretty much like their posting personas, in fact I met one of them specifically because of how she came across in her posts. I don't think I've met any male posters from here, but you never know do you? ;)

I don't really have a preconceived notion of what anyone who posts here islike. If I see a post from a troll or someone who's blatantly out to offend I do get an image of a George Osbourne type in my head. When anyone talks about Galahad (is that's spelt right?) I think of Morgan Freeman in Bruce Almighty (though for some unknown reason in my imagination he smokes lots of weed?). Knowingly I've met two people who post on here every now and then - and I had absolutley no idea what they'd look like/act like, but they were both so polite, respectful and yummy smelling that I now have very high expectations of what Pnetters will be like. Though I do tend to go by names. AsgardsSon - strapping blond viking type. Lancelot - clearly on his PC whilst wearing suit of armour. You get the idea...

It's kind of like reading a book I suppose, in your minds eye you have an idea of what the person looks like, but when the film comes out you think 'ooh I wouldn't have pictured them like that'.

Before I started punting, my perception of W.G.s, prostitutes, escorts, was gleaned from the media, tv, newspapers and novels. Fiction is a word that could be used to describe all three.

Im pleased to say that reality has scotched all my preconceived perceptions of the lovely ladies.

I wonder how many have that perception of me.

i came into punting to get my rocks off conversation was never part of it when i started but as time has gone on i have actually spoken to some of them and they are actually really interesting people that i would get along with as friends in another life.

i never expected to get that kind of insight. i guess i just didnt expect to have stuff in common with WGs

Can only speak from myself, I'm very very different online. Some people care (and some an awful lot) about what people think of their online persona on boards and get something out of that and can be addicted to it. I don't care what people make of my online persona so don't bother to try to make friends online and just come to discuss things as honestly as poss to try to learn and hear others' points of view. I realised I moaned way to much recently (as some of you will've seen) and stuck in that rut so vowed to stop the moaning anywhere online and keep out of arguments.
