Washington Post article on 'trafficking'

8 posts in this topic

I posted this article on the General Information board but it really belongs here. It tells a cautionary tale about the furor over 'trafficking' that has taken place in the US during the past ten years (this article was written two years ago but you can change the names and dates and it almost precisely describes our current turmoil here in the UK). The same villains and villainesses, the same warped ideologies, the same craven distortion of facts and creation of false statistics. Will it ever cease? Now if only I can get this entire link to print out here:

I can't. but if you enter the link and replace the three dots with /content/article/2007/09/22AR2007 you should be able to read the article - it is long, but fascinating.

Thanks, Tiggy. And no worries, it's a working link.

Will read at my leisure.

Just like the UK, someone has latched onto a figure, manipulated it, multiplied it and got a figure which has set the benchmark for the perpetration of one of the biggest urban myths of modern times.

What's not helped is that trafficking is a real humanitarian issue which we all recognise, yet those who should know better have jumped on an emotional bandwagon and hijacked it for their own means, even if the message they were delivering was a downright lie.

Who's next to admit they've been banding around bogus figures? France, Germany? Australia?

I draw a very stong parallel here with the boy who cried wolf.

Will it ever cease?

Probably, alas, not. A read of Ringdal's Love for Sale - World History of Prostitution, Grove Press NY, 2004 (worth the £15 or so from Amazon) identified similar, and similalry exaggerated, moral panics about the White Slave Trade in the 1890s and 1930s.

Do not know about the situation in US but wherever the US army goes, woman trafficking goes with it in its worst form.

In Bosnia 10's of clubs were set up all over the country to serve SFOR. The girsl were from all the usual EE countries. Their passport would be taken off them on arrival and they were not allowed any outside contact for the duration of their stay.

As soon as SFOR moved out, the government declared the clubs illegal and shut them all down.

I believe the Romans were the first to coin the term 'camp followers'.

Tying in with the above, here's another fascinating piece from the US highlighting the many parallels between the current panic about "sex trafficking" and the very similar panic a century ago over "white slavery".
