The following was sent to me by a viral hepatitis specialist nurse based in a hospital in the North of England:


Important sexual health advice – please read this

  • Practising safer sex i.e. using condoms for penetrative and oral sex can help prevent getting a sexually transmitted infection.
  • It is possible to have an infection and not have symptoms – local Genito-Urinary Medicine (sexual health) clinics offer free screening and treatment if needed. They also provide general support and advice, and offer free condoms.
  • Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver and can be passed on through unprotected sex and contact with blood of an infected person. There is a short course of vaccines available to prevent transmission. These are available free of charge at Genito-Urinary Medicine clinics for people at risk.
