Browse Punternet From Cloud Wifi Hotspots - Why You Need A Vpn On Your Smartphone

6 posts in this topic

I was out today having a coffee in one of my regular haunts which now has Cloud WiFi access that I can use courtesy of my Sky subscription.

However, Cloud WiFi bars Punternet as Pornography but with a VPN (Virtual Private Network) you can circumvent this bar.

With my VPN off I could only see this:

Using my VPN client (note VPN at the top of the screen):

I use Hotspot Shield for my iPhone and an annual subscription is only £7.99.

There are many uses for VPN which I won't start to list here but for anyone who wants to check Punternet from a restricted WiFi hotspot such as Cloud WiFi it's invaluable.

Actually, it was yesterday not today.

If anyone is interested and thinks this is complicated - it's not. Just turn VPN on (or leave it on permanently), and use your regular browser (I use Mercury).

Using a VPN makes your phone or netbook much more secure when using Hotspots so it's good practice.

I wonder but I'm colour blind, sorry.

It's Adultwork IOS for iPhones, a very good web app it is too. You can peruse it on PC by adding /IOS after .com (I assume a link to AW would be pushing my luck).

Do you have to use Hotspot shield? Presumably that handles the protocol etc, like a an app I once had from Cisco?

So you just download the app to the iphone/ipad?

Would the £7.99 cover both devices?

And presumably with VPN, I can use it to log on to my bank when on an insecure wifi network, like on a train?

Ta.

You have an account code which will work for up to 5 devices on the same iTunes account. You also have a free trial before you need to pay.

This is a full blown VPN web tunnel so you have a different IP. Using Hotspot shield you will always appear to be in the USA, I also use this to log into my USA iTunes account for apps not available in the UK App Store.
