Private Browsing...whats The Point When....

24 posts in this topic

...it saves your most used page so as soon as you type the first w of the www. up pops the ONE website URL you are using private browsing to hide!

Also even though I keep deleting all history and top sites even when using private browsing as soon as i put twitter in it comes up with my username and password in the boxes even though I have the remember me box unticked...unbelievable. Its almost as if private browsing is designed to help people catch out the people with something to hide. Be careful everyone as my website url popped up continuously until I had put google into the web browser about 10 times...utterly ridiculous.

I know it doesnt hide stuff on your hard drive but that doesnt matter...the bloody web browser coming up saying my escorting website does though...I am so annoyed!!

I would look again at your settings. I have my pc set up for private browsing and it does just that. I do check regularly that it's working but I do find that none of my history is retained and i don't have the address pop up as soon as I type in the first few letters. There will be plenty of people on here that have much more knowledge than me about the subject and i'm sure that they will bemore than willing to advise you. I don't use twitter so that may have a bearing on it.

Likewise.

I don't know what BleachBit does about Twitter.

Are you talking about a laptop/desktop or a smartphone?

Which browser do you use Chloe?

I SRWare Iron these days which is Google Chrome without the Google spying. Incognito mode is really good and no evidence whatsoever of where I've been.

Use TOR and run firefox from a USB stick rather than off your HD

We have a couple of parallel threads atm.

I used to run Firefox portable from a Truecrypt container, works a dream. Can be hidden on hard drive or on USB stick. As I'm not bothered about history or favourites I just use Incognito now. I might resurrect it soon just for fun.

No experience of TOR.

I see TOR was mentioned above a couple of times.

Perarhaps we should all familiarise ourselves with this software if the government gets the 'snoopers charter' it wants.

Try using Firefox - it has a feature in Tools>Options>Privacy>Location bar that you set to 'Suggest Nothing' that will cure your problem

I would guess all the other browsers will have a similar setting, someone might confirm that but if not change your browser.

I use BT internet and use the "in private" browsing facility and, as I said in post #3, have not (as yet) had a problem.

Google chrome is my browser and I flick to "incognito mode" for fun stuff. Leaves no trace and shuts down immediately if someone enters the room.

Google chrome invades your privacy though.

Check out SRWare Iron, it's Google Chrome but only the good bits.

For what it's worth:

I use Firefox with the NoScript, Adblock Plus, BetterPrivacy and Ghostery add ons.

After every session I use BleachBit to cleanse my system of temporary files etc.

They shall not pass! That's my motto. :)

If you were to go on to a forum such as Mozillazine you'd see that my arrangement is far from unusual. A lot of paranoid folks and a lot to be paranoid about. Not least Google, the shifty so and so's. :)

if you are google members make sure you sign out before naughty browsing cos they will log everything. and make sure you turn of data logging in your google account.

Indeed.

Use Ixquick or Startpage, Ixquick's Google Scraper. They don't log anything. :)

Im on a mac using Safari which has its own private browsing. I was making sure it was turned on every time, no history was being recorded as I checked that every time too but I notice now that the problem I stated above is now happening. Its a bit annoying and very worrying.

Seems to have happened to others:

If that link doesn't help I'm sure that there will loads of on line support for Mac users, official and unofficial. You can almost certainly find someone out there in cyberspace to help.

Chloe, the most likely explanation is that you once absent-mindedly typed in the site url when you weren't in private browsing mode.

okay seem to have found the problem, it saved in the bookmarks for some reason under bubbles, i typed bubbles into the browser quickly once when my son walked into the room, it was the first word that came into my head lol.

So in the bookmarks it just showed the word bubbles...when i clicked onto the bookmarks it came up with the word bubbles on the left and on the right my web address .mmmm a very strange happening but it seems to be sorted out now, thanks for the advice again guys. xx

lol

If it's of any help my procedure for those kind of situations is to keep a second browser window or tab open in the background, with your "bubbles" or unrelated page, ready to bring up by the 'Alt-F4' keystroke, or whatever keyboard shortcut closes your current tab. Just hope your computer isn't prone to freezing up!
