It seems you have to have Ninja Systems Admin skills if you want it to do more than Apple provides out of the box.

Have a look through this forum - http://forum.xbmc.org/index.php. I use SeasOnPass (http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605-jailbreaking-101-seas0npass) and have access to thousands of movies, sports, porn channels etc.  I also have the full Sky package and generally watch stuff I already pay for. I think you still need an Apple 2nd Gen box (the newer 3rd Gen boxes had not been jailbroken the last time I checked) - but these are usually available on a popular auction website.  I found it quite easy to jailbreak, lots of step by step instructions on YouTube etc. If your a football fan, you can usually pick up a selection of Staurday 3pm games with English commentry as well.  If you get one, PM me and I'll send you some more links.

Have just downloaded to my PC and most if not all channels available. May have to download to laptop too and watch through TV. A bit more cumbersome than the Apple TV but will work while waiting for 3rd generation to be Jailbroken

Okay word of warning. If you jailbreak any apple product you automatically break your warranty and they wont touch your product with a bargepole even if its within the warranty date. Jailbreaking looks great, all that free stuff but sometimes what it does is a few months down the line...wreck your stuff. My son had his iphone jailbroken and 6 weeks later seized up and NOTHING would get it going again. Was as if all the software had been sucked out and there was a photo of his icon page left behind instead of actual icons. Several of his mates did their phones at the same time and my sons was not the only one to freeze up after a while. So...jailbreak if you want but you have been warned.

I've had my Apple TV jailbroken for about 8 months and its been fine, it was second hand anyway and already out of warrenty. I've just installed the stuff from http://www.xbmchub.com/ on my laptop and it looks exactly the same as what I see through Apple TV - I notice there is an IPAD version as well, so I may give that a go. Chloe rightly points out the risks involved, I know a few people who now use there Apple TV as a door stop as its good for nothing else.  My iPad is already Jailbroken and it needs to be to get this software installed. I work in IT and did lots of research before I attempted jailbreaking.

One of the reasons for Jailbreaking my iPad2 (WiFi only) is that you can install an App that can use a 3G connection from your iPhone, BlackBerry etc and turn your iPad into a 3G device without having to sign up to another monthly contract. It works over Bluetooth, and comes in really useful if you need to get on the internet when no WiFi is available.

I thought apple tv was great when I first got it. then I relished I could stream movies even easier on my Xbox. also I bought a few season passes for tv shows, such as nikita and person of interest. What apple TV has a habit of doing is making you wait for episodes to become available, I have now waited weeks for episodes of both those series but to no avail. This is widely documented on the comments and reviews on their sites. I might add I have since bit the bullet and downloaded them from a torrent site, so much for honesty! So if I jailbreak it and it goes tits up, it'll make a great paper weight but thanks for the warning Chloe. xxx

Taking the tech level down a peg, I recently made a rash purchase of a Roiku unit and when I tell you I recognised one film title and have watched that and my favourite of the programmes available is stuff on iPlayer You'll understand I'm not impressed.

I hadn't heard of apple tv till a day or two after buying it and as I use iTunes to digitise my vinyl and tape collections, perhaps that would have been a more natural next step?

So, feeling cutting-edge technology owes me something, can someone explain this: http://www.xbmchub.com/ please?

i haven't looked at it, and you may fairly say do that before bothering you all, but I don't know how safe in any respect it is for a dodo to mess about with.

Any shreds of wisdom appreciated.

And if you want to buy a Roiku (posh version) it is brilliant and I can only part with it at a premium price :(
