Decriminalising Prostitution

10 posts in this topic

Here is food for thought, I bet if I ask every single punter who frequent this boards if they think this will be a good thing, I will get a resounding yes!

However....I was just talking to a mate in NZ who runs girls, Since decriminalisation the prices have gone UP not down as some would have thought, I was looking over my old parlour rates, where they used to 'hire' us out at $175 ph it is now $250ph, while an Indi was around the $120 mark they are now around $230, yes I know it was a decade since I was over there, but if I look at the pricing in the UK over the past decade it has decreased not increased.

Just makes you think huh, NZ suffered a double dip recession just like the rest of us. The only thing changed was decriminalisation.

Mebbe its the cost of complying with regulations thats pushed prices up.

Exactly. If you make something legal, you can regulate and therefore tax it.

According to an online currency converter $230 (NZ) = £119.30. What is the average wage in NZ and what is the cost of living?

The converter:

As you say, probably every punter here would support decriminalisation.

I would doubt that it would lead to price rises. Probably something else has caused the rise in NZ - its mainly supply and demand that affects the price. The large number of EE and Brazilan girls here has bumped up supply here, and kept prices level (falling slightly in real terms over the last few years). Maybe they do not find their way to NZ in any great number - or can't easily get a visa ?

Decriminalisation and legalisation aren't the same thing. And either way we're taxed already wherever we are and whatever the situation, including here :).

The population for New Zealand is 4,451,017 (Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand )

The population for London alone is 8,173,194 (Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London )

The population for the United Kingdom is 63,181,775 (Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom )

I am no expert but perhaps these figures explain why there are more Eastern European and Brazilian girls here.

This is a crude way of analysing the figures but, for what it is worth:

If we assume that the average UK salary is 30,875 GBP*

and that the average New Zealand salary is 72,227NZD**

and that 150GBP is an average rate for 1 hour with an escort in the UK

and that 230NZD is the equivalent for 1 hour with an escort in NZ

then 30,875GBP/150GBP = 205.83

and 72,227NZD/230NZD = 314.03

we can see that the average New Zealander, as well as living in a country with a sane and unspiteful attitude to punting gets more bang for his buck than we do.

I suggest every member of this forum emigrates to New Zealand where we will be free and in so doing deprive our own miserable killjoys of the tax revenue (direct and indirect) of 20,000+ citizens. :D :D

I wouldn't support the total decriminalisation of prostitution ie. the repeal of all prostitution related offences in the Sexual Offences Acts 1956 and 2003. That would include the offences relating to soliciting, controlling, trafficking etc. I know that this is advocated by some.

Personally I'd rather leave things as they are than go down the decriminalisation route. Legalisation/regulation of brothels would be problematic. The Home Office recommendations in the 2004/5 Consulation "Paying the Price" relating to the legalisation of mini -brothels seemed sensible. It was disappointing that Blair never followed it through.

It's not really very fair to compare UK and NZ. They are two very different countries. I would go so far as to say the NZ infrastructure is almost third world in  way.   It is is a charming country and very safe. I enjoy spending time there but you have to remember that almost 90% of the population lives in 3 or 4 of the major cities and the rest are spread out over the agricultural scene.

There are very few opportunities for immigrants since there is hardly any industry apart from tourism.

I don't think South Island will ever recover from the Christchurch earthquake; the city reconstruction hasn't even started yet.

I would say to anyone who enjoys the great outdoors "go to NZ and you will be enthralled".
