Iceland Considers Banning All Pornography

20 posts in this topic

Looks like I won't be moving to Iceland anytime soon   -

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/iceland/9866949/Iceland-considers-pornography-ban.html

Interesting rationale - watching porn leads to violence.....the women who appear in it are being harmed and are having their civil rights violated.....etc.
If porn led to violence then the world, since the inception of the internet, would have resembled a Mad Max movie.

Iceland's broadband connections per capita are globally one of highest, even in unlikely event such a move passes every porn hound there will simply migrate onto TOR or equivalent.

Nordic countries seem to have a strange relationship with the realm of sexuality, back in 70s they were considered the zenith of liberalism eg Norway was first country to bring in legislation to fully legalize all form of 'consensual' porn (barring underage & animals). They subsequently brought in some restrictions.
Sweden had fully legal & regulated prostitution until relatively recently when they criminalized the purchase ( but not sale ) of sex...which has had some interesting unintended consequences (although it virtually eliminated street walking it drove seedier side of biz even further underground).

Feminism appears to be ahem.. more 'developed' in the Nordics than most countries..and while from one perspective the aims of such a ban may be considered laudable, in the modern world such a ban imho is a) not possible, B) censorship which won't fly/may backfire.

One of the people mentioned in the article has obviously had a downer on pornography for a long time:

(apologies to the gentleman who pointed out in another thread that Wikipedia can't always be believed)

Considering most porn comes from the internet I wonder how on earth they plan to ban it. Will they start putting filters and limiting google use "Chinese style"?

Please dont get conceited on this! They are indicating that if passed there wil bel sentences for downloaders of tegular porn. Its relatively easy for them to prevent ISPs from providing access. The supposed rational behind it is to protect kids. Which is a completely different matter entirely! When as seems very possible client criminalisation is introduced in Scotland and Ireland ISps will be prevented from allowing access to escort related sites such as Punternet and as another man hating measure the loons could very easily add a ban on regular porn siyes also as an aside! Also your right to anonymously buy a sim card/mobile phone will be at risk! The Price of Freedom Is Eternal Vigilance!

I have to admit I did not read the link, but what do we Swedes and the Dains got to do with Iceland banning porn? And why are we driving to Denmark???

No porn required in Iceland. When I was there it was a hyper promiscuous society. They need something to fill those long dark winter nights.

I think this comment is referring to the fact sex work is legal in Denmark but not Sweden. Porn is currently legal in both those countries.

Iceland seems to be on some kind of icy sliding slope regarding the sex industry. First they passed laws against sex work and lapdancing clubs, now they have their focus on internet porn using emotive language such as "protecting vulnerable women and children" to justify their proposals.

What I would like to know is there really a link between porn and sex related crime? Japan is an interesting country- its prostitution and porn industry is thriving and it produces tonnes of porn (much of it bizarre and violent) yet it has low crime and low rape. USA on the other hand has laws against prostitution and they tend to have prudish attitudes yet rape and violent crime there is sky-high.

There isn't, it's all about christian moralism...

Japan isn't immune to strange bouts of moralism, they had the bizarre law requiring people to blur out all genitalia in porn until recently. So many ruined Maria Ozawa videos, what a tragedy...

The Iceland proposal is absurd though. Not to mention utterly impossible to enforce, even if they are so careless about their freedoms that they would allow the state to set up a China/Iran style firewall.

That was prob partially my fault in conflating the Nordics as a 'unit' in OP. Swedes are driving in droves to DK (or taking a short ferry to Germany/Baltics) to circumvent the new laws on pros in that nation.

But imho, there is a valid interconnected point about attitudes towards sexulity in the Nordic countries, viz;

they started out as some of the most enlightened places but are drifting towards a full scale reversal as seen via the examples mentioned..broader question is WHY? (It's easy to blame feminism, but I suspect it's much more complicated than that.)

Yes that law really had me stumped. They allow stuff other countries would find shocking/horrific/repulsive yet they aren't allowed to show genitilia without pixellizing it. Talk about ironic.

But I didn't hear they had stopped that law?

After a quick google search I see no mention of the law being repealed... that's strange. I distinctly remember reading somewhere that it had, and at the same time noticing that Maria Ozawa videos were appearing online uncensored (which they have). I guess I was wrong. I wonder whether foreign porn has censorship added in when sold there?

I wonder whether Japanese guys get used to it and then find the uncensored stuff to be 'too much detail'.

I remember a lot of people complaining that blu-ray porn was 'too much' when it first came out. It was (and maybe is still) normal to hear people saying that seeing the imperfections on the pornstars made visible by HD made it worse.

If Iceland were to ban porn though, they would have another problem, which is actually defining when something becomes 'porn.'

I think you'll find the Jap porn you see online unpixeled Is the US version, the native films are still censored In Japan.

If the Icelanders have no porn to look at perhaps they will buckle down to work to try and repay some of the money they owe everyone. :)
