Request For Help With A Research Project

18 posts in this topic

Hi,

I'm a final year student at Sheffield University and I'm doing some research into the lives of women working as escorts. I'd be really grateful if and ladies who use this site could help me out by filling in this quick questionnaire - it takes 2-3 minutes and is completely anonymous. Just click (or copy and paste into your browser) the link below.

There's more info about the survey on the first page of the questionnaire.

Thanks!

Jane

A couple of observations about the first page.

You have got 2012 as your completion date.

You say escorts are being randomly selected. Your methodology here of seeking self-selecting respondents is not 'random'.

Why don't you pop down to your local parlour and punt a few wg? they will probably show how to get through your degree as well.

you can only also get as far as the second page. For reasons entering the industry you just get a message saying you need to complete the page. I guess if you dont tick all the boxes you dont get through to round 3, no ones going to tick boxes that dont apply to them

There are some interesting questions on there.  Would love to see the outcome, but unless this survey is issued across the whole industry (street girls, Parlours and so on) I can't see how you will get a full balanced view of the industry as a whole.

It worked for me, it;s fairly simplistic, but I think to be expected at this level of education. Holly does have a good point, the difference between the types of escorts in the industry is huge!

Maybe whacking a questionaire up on a forum isnt the best way to get results.Don't get me wrong,i know it avoids leg work but it does leave your results open to contamination.I can pretty much guarentee youll get some fellas filling it in,if not for giggles then out of noseyness to see what all the sheets contain. You'd be better doing what someone else did whilst doing a similar survey and directly messaging the ladies themselves. It may take some time but your results would be better.

Also,as others have indicated, you will only get results from one part of the industry so if you wanted to do a comprehensive study,as someone said, you can't beat getting out there. For street level trade maybe pop to a known red light area,or one of the centres opened for the street walkers. When its been done before the researchers have actually managed to get some good results that way

Hi, thanks for all your comments.

Sorry about the typo on the first page, I have amended this. Regarding the comments about reaching indoor sex workers, as part of the study I will be using other ways of reaching women, for example by approaching them directly. This study is only looking at indoor workers rather than street workers.

I agree the questionnaire is a bit simplistic - the problem is more sophisticated questionnaires tend to get fewer responses. I really appreciate the comments that have been left and am taking them on board, so thanks again.

Jane

How do you authenticate the contributors in your survey ?

I am a punter. But there is nothing to stop me from filling in your survey. I can enter any rubbish I wish.

If this survey link is leaked to mumsnet, then you can expect all sorts of deliberately false contributions.

I recommend that you cancel this survey, start another link, and only individually contact ladies here with a request for contribution.

Just a quick observation on the age question. It is illegal for an under 18 year old to work as a sex worker yet the first age category is 16-21. That means if a 21 year old fills in your survey that means they "might be a 16 year old". I suggest having an extra category for "under 18" and then having the next category "18 - 21".

16 - 21

 22 - 39
40 - 55
55+

No, but two students from two different universities doing a final year project in a similar area is really not that surprising - there are a fair few students doing courses where the socail details of prostitution is a valid research area.

Good grief, another one? I think this industry and its ins and outs must be one of the most popular subjects at the moment

I was being a tad sarcastic. To be less pedantic,is it the lazy subject.Time was people went out and did the leg work with their research, not just whack it on a few forum and await the results to drop in their laps. Both questionaires are heavily flawed and they dont seem to care about wether they actually get any real results.

As I said in the other thread, we don't know what other methods they are using - the internet has changed how social research is carried out and for all we know they could be using other methods of data capture as well so suggesting it is the "lazy subject" really is a bit out of order.

As for the quality of survey, there will always be problems with them not meeting every responders requirements as you can only really deal with a finite number of possible answers while in reality there is an infinite number.  You have to draw the line at some point and choose a few, relatively broad but not completely applicable responses otherwise you spend an inordinate amount of time trying to equate different responses into a format that is presentable and meaningful.

Just to be pedantic - it is illegal to buy sex from an under 18 year old, but the service provider aged 16 and older is not committing an offence.

So, perhaps, the age categories are appropriate.
