Sex Attacks On Prostitutes In Manchester Police are investigating sexual assaults on four sex street workers in Manchester city centre - which are believed to be linked.

Four prostitutes have been sexually assaulted in the Fairfield Street area of Manchester city centre.

Each victim was attacked separately by a man between 8.30pm and 10.30pm on Tuesday.

Police have launched a probe into what they have described as "serious sexual assaults" on the sex street workers.

It is believed the attacks are linked.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the attacks - or who may have been a victim - to come forward.

They can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of serious sexual assault and is currently in police custody.

Poor women, I hope they are okay. What a grim place to have to work also. Wonder if its the same guy or a couple in cahoots to "get the WGs" x

From what I hear.there has only been one guy involved in the attacks, and he was detained last night, the four woman are getting help for what they went through, ( three were raped and a fourth sexually assaulted) the back of Piccadilly train station is quite a busy area, and is a well known red light area.

Maybe now police will look at some kind of safe area for these ladies to work from, im not saying these ladies were lucky, but it could have been quite worse for the victims.

like Chloe says its not a great area to work from, lets hope some good can come from this, M.A.S.H. can get some much needed awareness going, and raise the need for a safe working area for those street girls who need too work, and get the support they need.

Fairfield Street does look pretty grim from the photo but it is one of the busiest roads in and out of Manchester City Centre, just after the bridge you can see at the far end of road end the photo, is the cab rank for Piccadilly Railway Station and Fairfield Street turns into Whitworth Street which is busy with pubs, clubs and restaurants. The report does say it's the Fairfield Street area, it's the darker side streets off there that the street girls work and where they are most in danger, they need more protection and help there if anywhere. At one time the street girls were arrested on a regular basis and there was one day at the court on Minshull Street just round the corner that was known as 'prostitutes day', the girls would appear in court, be fined and then go off to earn the the money to pay the fines. A few years ago it seems that that GMP made there should be a couple of 'traditional' areas that were purely business during the day but closed in the evening and as long as the street girls stuck to them out of 'civilian' hours they would pretty much leave them alone. Sensible in a way as you're never going to end the scene, but in other ways risky as this latest case shows. If cities are to have RLDs they need to be safe for the women working there, (punters too). The main problem seems to be that our societies often hypocritical view of prostitution will continue to lead to crimes like these happening, I don't think there's an easy solution to the problem, but we need to do something as a culture otherwise things like this will happen again, sadly I'm afraid I don't have a magic bullet, but from what I've gathered Amsterdam doesn't seem to have the same number as we do. Attitudes towards sex over there seem to be a bit more sensible than ours, including sexual health and education. Hopefully GMP have got the right man and he will be be convicted and given a serious sentence, hopefully discouraging others of the same mind set. There will always be a drug addict desperate for cash, a few years ago I'd been to see my kids on Christmas Day morning then went to my then girlfriends for Christmas dinner, I cut through the back of Piccadilly on my way to her place and saw two women working the streets, heroin, crack cocaine etc don't allow for holidays :(

Very good post Mike, Its been known for many decades that street walkers are working there, and pimps sit around the taxi rank watching for clients, I arranged to meet an escort by the taxi rank, and a pimp offered her work, this was when we were walking to the station.

www.mash.org.uk/ do all they can to help and advise street workers, and its through action by them that we can start to work towards getting some safe areas where street girls can work in a safe enviroment, they cant all/or all want, to work in parlours, so at least we can make some of the areas safer.
