I Phone Tracking

14 posts in this topic

I'm yet to upgrade to an iPhone, still got my Blackberry.

My son yesterday showed me an App that allows him to track my ex-missus using the gps on her iPhone to an extent where we able to pin point her exact location!

I want an iPhone but this is a serious drawback for me and my punting hobby.

Can you turn it off or not allow your phone to be tracked?

Also, has anyone been caught out in this way?

I don't know much about this but I thought the person being tracked had to give permission. So your "ex-missus" would receive a message on her phone prompting her to allow or disallow a stated phone number (your son's) to track her.

So if you brought an iphone only people you gave permission to could track you - though maybe someone knows different...

However if your ex-missus left her iphone laying around the house and it didn't need a code to access it then he could easily set up the tracking without her knowing -

but it's simple to set up a 'passcode' so no one else can use your phone but again those in the "know" may know different...

I think you can do this on all smart phones (i.e androids as well) but again  I could be wrong.

The couple of tracking apps I've seen are as above and you have to respond to the text to allow the app to function.

Many also send a monthly text requiring you to re-confirm your acceptance.

Don't know about monthly, but you are right about acceptance - just need to accept the initial text and you can even listen to calls in/out and its virtually undetectable - scary!

iPhones and iPads have an app called Findmyiphone, which I think comes installed on the device. As far as I recall, you need to know the owner's Apple ID, which is an email address.

If internet connectivity (wifi or 3G) on the iPhone is turned off, it won't work (I think).

Yes but did you check if she was actually at that exact address. I have used several, no , many tracking apps on my iphone and my sons iphones and they almost always track to our home address or the last local area they were even if they are not there now, or our own street but 10 houses away. They are rubbish, if you can show me an app that is actaully accurate then please tell me the name as I want it lol x

p.s markw no it doesnt work if phone turned off which is why my sons iphone 5 is god knows were, he lost it when low on battery x

There is findmyiphone, however it needs your itunes username and password.  But the financial implications of giving these details away are almost as bad as giving someone your bank card and pin.

There is a second called find my friends.  You have to enable it and invite your friends to be able to find you, if you don't they can't.

You can also adjust the privacy settings when setting up the phone in lots of ways to protect your privacy.

Finally if you do get an iphone, get an app called bbcalc, it's a private contacts folder disguised as a calculator, very useful for keeping numbers you don't want others to see stored in.

Chloe you misread me slightly, I said I think it doesn't work if the 3G and mobile date connection on the phone is turned off.

And if you want an accurate position the Location Services (GPS) has to be on as well. The phone has to be powered on obviously.

As far as I know if you go to the privacy section in iphone settings & turn off your location services your phone cannot be tracked.

Chloe

Find my iPhone is very accurrate, if it was enabled, it will locate your phone ot within a few feet as long as there is a signal.  It also remembers the last known location.

On top of that, if you lose your phone, you can make it play a tune (as long as there is a charge)  and if your phone is stolen you can set a passcode remotely to prevent anyone using it, and even delete the entire contents of the phone remotely.

No tracking system is perfect, but the Apple attempt is very good.

You could just put the phone in airplane flight mode, whilst undertaking punts.

It effectively switches off all comms but enables you to use the phone functions, blame poor signal in a certain area
