In My Local Rag.....

18 posts in this topic

The daily local newspaper used to have a "personal services" section in the classified ads, this has been long gone now.

Does anyone know why some papers have stopped placing these ads?

Does your local paper still have these type of ads?

I have since noticed that the number of profiles on aw has increased significantly for the area too, any chance the 2 are linked?

Most of all the local papers in London still have the personal ads in them. Pre AW days they were the source of my punts, infact some of my best punts came from the local papers.

In about 2008 Harriet Harman and her cronies put pressure on various news groups to ban ads relating to prostitution claiming that they were linked to trafficking, and making veiled threats about looking at prosecuting them for money laundering. Some companies such as Johnston Press and Newsquest agreed to ban the ads; some didn't.

As well as now being affected by the recession, a big drop in advertising income, and a new government, in some areas the police would rather have the adverts because they prevent prostitution being driven underground.

My local paper stopped the ads but the last time I looked they were back.

The local rags where I live - in Huntingdonshire - have the personal services column - though I only see a few escort type ads there and they are probably just gals who are on aw anyway

Yes in my and my mates local papers still, and they were a source of me locating WGs for years pre-net along with various other sources.

Johnston Press own most of the small town rags in the whole of the UK so all the ad's disappeared together

List of titles here --->   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnston_Press

I think I read that the boss was pleased to announce that losses had reduced instead of increasing for the first time in many years.

Not that buoyant an industry obviously.

and some that do still feature adverts dont allow www addresses!

Think I'll stick with PN, AW and word of mouth - that last one conjures up some interesting thought!

manchester evening news has brought them back, metro free paper has them. i think that m.e.n is now owned by the mirror group (a labour supporting paper!) and metro owned by daily mail group!

the daily mail group refused to ban any personal ads in its papers, they were never going to listen to a labour govt unless it became law

They may have hiked their advertising rates up too high. An add for one day in coventry costs as much as an ad for a week in the milton keynes personal services.

I don't know why it would be an interesting thought??

I have had some great punts by talking to a friend that punts......I don't think he knows I punt tho but he does try to encourage me to visit some places, ive never let on to him that I have visited.

My local paper used to have a "lonely hearts" section but recently it's changed to pretty much "meet for sex" wording wise.

Few ads for local massage parlours  and various women providing serives as well.  Must have been a good dozen the other day.

Exchange and Mart always used to have a good personals section, but I've not bought it in years, so I don't know if it still does or not.
