Hpv...silent But Deadly? An Informed Mind Leads To A Health Body...

6 posts in this topic

A couple weeks Michael Douglas admitted that his throat cancer was caused by HPV from oral sex. This from a man who was treated for sex addiction but how many people in the street know what HPV is and why has this caused so much debate?

As with many viruses the majority turn out to be really common and mostly harmless. It’s the minority you have to worry about. There are more than 100 types of Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV. The majority of the known types of HPV cause no symptoms in most people .  Most  types of HPV cause common, harmless problems such as skin warts and verrucas.  Some 30-40 percent of HPV viruses are transmitted through sexual activity. In fact most sexually active adults will contract it during their lives even those who only have one sexual partner….yes that means you….all our saints are sinners.  In the genital area, HPV causes genital warts, number 2 in the all time favourite list of STIs in the UK. However, unfortunately, in a minority of cases HPV viruses can lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, throat and anus. In particular HPV 16 and 18 infections increase the odds of developing throat cancer. Hence Mr. Douglas conclusion as to his own illness.

Recently, HPV has also been linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, high-risk HPVs are present in 70% of cervical cancers, most anal cancers and some vaginal, vulvar, penile, and  throat cancers. The good news is that most high-risk HPV infections do NOT go on to cause cancer and will go away on their own within two years.

How do you contract HPV?

HPV is spread through skin contact, usually sex. It can also be spread though oral sex. The virus may be dormant from weeks to years meaning that you may not develop HPV immediately after contacting it. And for most  the virus will simply pass without causing any problems. According to the experts, the risk of contracting some oral cancers is raised by having oral sex with four or more people in your lifetime. Are you counting? Condoms provide some protection but, as they don’t cover all of the skin, HPV may still be passed on.

What are the symptoms of HPV?

Many people don’t have any symptoms and will be unaware that they have HPV but for  women HPV will be diagnosed through cervical screening.

What is the treatment for HPV?

Because of its link to cervical cancer the UK runs a HPV vaccination programme for girls aged 12–13. However the vaccines prevent but not treat existing infections. There is NO medical cure for HPV infections.  Cancer caused by HPV is treated in the normal way.

What is the preventive action for HPV?

The main message is to try and prevent HPV transmission through the use of condoms and by limiting your number of sexual partners.  If you have any worrying symptoms like persistent ulcers, pain, swelling or changes to your voice, see your doctor as soon as possible.

As for Mr. Douglas experts feel that his life long smoking and drinking may have contributed more to his throat cancer than HPV. Nevertheless the debate has made people realize that, as with all things in life safe practices, common sense and hygiene may not stop bad things happening but they certainly reduce the odds! If you are going to play Russian roulette then don’t do it with other people’s health.

We are all adults so we need to take responsibility for our own lives, our health and the choices we make especially where it affects other people. I am glad Mr. Douglas has spoken out and moved another taboo and relatively unknown health issue out into the public domain to increase awareness.

Stay health Chloe

Out of interest, are you going to post some words of support for a girl who has had the world drained out of her in recent days(I myself have cried for this girl, so so so so so devastated for this girl,no matter the sugar coating going on) on another forum you post on as ask this as without going in to detail, sexual health related!

And "no";-) :) you do not have another so called stalker on your hands, I pop there at times to keep afloat on dangerous men warnings, break or no break as well as a general look at some of the threads, read Ugly Mugs as well as member there, fabulous site UM is too, I go off on a tangent as per..sorry about that.

It is fantastic what you have relayed here for the masses, however it fees like it has been read from an article, almost word for word,something...lacking in humanness about the words here.

Most humans(not all) are pretty clued up to be fair and this does come across like a teacher lecturing to end of school(so 15-16,17) students who the teacher thinks have only got to "First base/light kissing" when many are already on to the last base"post coital snack"

And then:

"Yes that means you.. our saints and sinners",I imagine tongue in cheek, however no smiley face or other emo face to highlight this part is said in jest which makes me think this is not said in jest, and the part concerning, according to professionals in the know, after four partners, risk of some oral cancers may increase, and then to ask here, "are you counting", question is, "are you counting"?

How many lovely yummy cocks have many of us/you sucked/deep throated like Linda Love Lace gal(though what happened to her in truth was not as media make out,not cool at all!, another story for another day) and nibbled, not only for pay but also for personal time?

Licked the bulbous lollipop pre cum dripping candyfloss tasty head,well.. somewhat salty head if I am perfectly honest;-),this could be work or personal life.

It could read to some, hence lack of replies, which is odd, when even the most random/obscure ;)  threads here have at a couple of posts, as I was saying,it could read to some as a bit bossy,I have been bossy without meaning to be! before on here, on various threads which I am sure gets me the "no vote", however there I hope is a balance with light heart games.

To have simply no replies is quite rare, folks like commenting thoughts and opinions across the internet, even on threads created by folks they may not dig that much.

Some humor may help, the above is important to read, very important to read.

I could be wrong, often am.

Again, very informative post. :)

Me again, sorry I tried to edit, but time ran out.so quick!

Okay, it has hit me, your thread begins with a question, but then it leads on to "Informed mind and so on and so on",maybe the first part would have created a discussion.

Then throughout words, some questions, "do you know the signs, do you know the treatment",> instead of just that.

The reader is then treated to a step by step explanation about HPV, yup, so important, but why would any one answer, when all you asked was already answered..by yourself :D which makes me think, not only a theoretical question, but possibly was more so a chance to show folks here, where ever that you are clued up, are in the know, not sure, most likely wrong, apologies for any offence caused, just curious no replies here to be honest, and as to possible reasons why.

Hi

Sorry for the late reply. I stopped escorting over a over a year now.

The main reason I belive the post has no replies is because people like to hide from the truth. Its like mental Illness, alot of people will engage in a conversation cancer but one about mental illness most people will shy away.

Thank you for the comments, I will keep in mind for future reference.

I haven't been on in awhile, but I am starting a ribbon campaign. I am collecting information from individuals with PN and/or PNE, and will send the results to the HOPE board, as well as the leaders of the Pudendal Neuralgia Association.

I doubt it, they more likely read it then just had nothing to say. You pretty much covered it all so whats left to say?

Ill add this though, there is a nationwide scheme going on that has been for a while now for girls under a certain age to be inoculated against HPV
