When They Ask That Dreaded Question At Gum Clinic

8 posts in this topic

I believe there was a thread on this subject but I think it was in a different sub-board. Basically I am going to go to the GUM clinic (as it has been long overdue) but I feel very apprehensive about admitting I am seeing escorts. The last time I went, I did not admit it and possibly led to me not being 'fully tested' if you know what I mean (all that extra stuff they do to test escorts and men who see them).

My concern is not one of shame but rather of the potential of getting a bollocking one day should the laws changing to criminalize all men who pay for sex in any venue. I really don't like the idea of them having a record of me having liaised with sex workers for this reason. Perhaps I am being paranoid but I just can't shake this feeling of distrust.

This quandary is driving me nuts but I need to make a decision. What do you guys think?

Just give the GUM a false name, they get it all the time, i never give my real name and make an address up that in fact doesnt exist but i know the full postcode for the road. So i might say 60 such and such a road but that road only goes up to 58 as i know. I have never had a problem.

In  my experience GUMs have heard it all before, and arent that bothered about having your real details, for example i have never yet been asked for ID, just a phone number.

Or say you go to swinger parties, surely that would bring on the same level of checks?

I want to get an STI check (never had one) but am hesitant after the last time I went to my GP about sex. I went about erectile dysfunction and initially the GP assumed I was in a relationship. I said I wasn't and made the mistake of saying I met women from the internet. That was when the interrogation started- questions I was asked include do I pay for sex, what websites do I look at, am I gay, do I look at porn, do I look at ch*ld porn (I kid you not, she really asked me this).

I answered "no" to the Q do I pay for sex (because I only pay for companionship) and her reply was "oh I just needed to ask to check noone is being exploited".

That has really put me off going to the GP about anything to do with sex.

Is there a doctor on the board? This is surely most unusual, isn't it? But is there a point where a doctor can break his confidentiality?

I would worry about the law regarding this as it is not illegal to see an escort at this moment in time. If the law does change you'll only get into trouble for anything you do after the change.

Also the clinic can't divulge your medical records.

@op

Your visit to a GUM clinic is confidential

That is out of order and seems to breach a Dr's Duty of Care

Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity.

  • Treat patients politely and considerately.
  • Respect patients' right to confidentiality.

There lack of respect for your dignity, based on  presumptions and prejudice about sexual activity (p2p,abuse,porn,gay=abuse),

A strong indication of a willingness to flout confidentiality.

If this was recent,  I would write to (or visit) the Dr and object to the behaviour and insist (politely) that your rights are respected and if she not suitable contrite complain to the GMC.
