The Big Ten female athlete of the year award no longer is named for the Olympic track star from Wisconsin who later acknowledged working as a prostitute.

Suzy was outed by the Smoking Gun website as having worked as a $600 per hour escort in Las Vegas.

You can tweet a message of support and encouragement to her at @favorhamiton

This woman is a great athlete, but stigma and moral panic just can't cope with a woman running and having sex for money !

What has brought this all back into the news is that Suzy was stripped of her athlete of the year award this week.

I just think it so incredibly unfair that someone's sexual work can be used against them in such a callous way.

However I am so very pleased that Dr. Brooke Magnanti didn't lose her career when she was outed.

It is very strange how being outed as a sex worker impacts in different ways on those who are outed.

You can only be outed if you are in in the first place if that makes sense, by hiding what you do you are pretty much saying that your ashamed of what you do.  It's like everything else, if more women come out there loud and proud about who they are and what they do then the stigma attached would soon dwindle, of that I'm certain.

Oh in an idealistic world Holly yes!

I was never ashamed of what I did but when I was outed it lost me my job- so I think your statement is a little harsh. Other women have been hassled by social services when outed, lost homes if their landlords find out, lose friends, spoil relationships with others and so on.

I can't see many women risking the above (and other things I have missed)  purely to possibly pave a path for other women.

So, you use your real name on here do you seeing as you're so proud?

Can't say she floats my boat. If she opened the door, I would do a runner.

The problem is she would easily catch me !

Really Lydia.  I fostered and the social services were well aware of what I did before hand (although I didn't actually work whilst fostering).  It's not illegal and as long as you don't do it around the children or put them in danger its not a problem.  Other than the name change and looking back I wish I'd used my own, I was very much out there and never tried to hide it.  I was naive and thought that changing your name was the done thing to do.  My kids were fine and have grown up into nice non judgemental human being's so no problem there.

When I did fall foul of the problems mentioned in another thread they tried to out to me to the press, thing was, as I wasn't hiding anything or doing anything illegal the press weren't interested and actually went after those that openly bragged about doing it.. Kama..lol.

Over the years I have openly fought with the likes of HH and others 'and can prove it'.  I'm well aware that I seem you wind you up Lydia but I do wish you would find someone else to badger there are others that post on here besides me.

I have my ideals, you have yours.  If you and others want to hide what you are then that's your prerogative, but this is no different than the gay world and the TV world both of which are making great strides to be accepted by doing what Brooke, Laura and others are currently doing for this scene.  I stand by what I say, did my bit in my time but it's not my fight anymore it's yours.  I'm not a hooker anymore but I'll quite happily support those that need it.

Oh and just to make you happy....  My real name is Bonita which I used along with my surname in my many letters to HH quite openly.  Now wouldn't that have made a super working name?

Okay, I am out my family knows what I do, so do my regular friends, but I can really understand why some women don't want to be out, when that could mean losing the children, or a regular job or whatever.

If I am sacked from a regular job because they find out I do escorting on the side I have no comeback, if they sacked me for some other prejudicial consideration such as race or sexuality I could sue them.

While I am quite open about what I do, I do not use my real name because I visit various countries that would refuse me entry if it was know that I worked as a prostitute, and they still refuse you entry if you have stopped working.

I know several women who can't enter the USA because they have been grassed up to Homeland Security as WGs.

Don't get me wrong I can understand why women do hide it and am not attacking them for doing it, I've seen first hand the damage it does when someone is outed and that's dreadful, but they shouldn't have to hide who they are as if its something to be ashamed of.

Just pointing out that its so much easier to put your head above the parapet, get listened to, get more work ect when you are out and the more of us that are out the more likely the profession is going lose it's stigma.

(note to self, think before you post and get your wording the wrong way round so others don't misunderstand what you are trying to say or take offense).

When women become prostitutes they risk being outed. Occupational hazard as they say so I'm sure Suzy Hamilton will get over it.

NO !

Sorry Inna, but I cannot give my support to even the most athletic of girls ( for example our own wonderful "Golden Girl" Jessica Ennis--Hill, who  I am not suggesting for a moment would ever be WG  :( ) charging six hundred bucks an hour.

Too much, IMHO

Only if her pussy was lined with wet ermine fur, and even then, I would need to think twice  ;)

Same with punters, when they join in they risk being outed too. Better for everyone concerned if everyone not concerned kept their noses out of other peoples business.

They may be able to strip her olympic standing but its physically impossible to strip her personal achievement

I'm sorry but I have to come back to some of these points with regards to being outed.  The losing children thing if getting outed.  If Social Services deem it fit to remove a child from a woman that is working as a prostitute it will be because the woman is putting the child at risk by being a prostitute.  If that's the case then I'm sorry but she deserves it.  Social Services will not remove a child if they are being cared for properly and safe.  I've had loads of dealings with them over the years and know this to be true.  Do you really think as soon as certain girls found out I was fostering they didn't try with the anonymous emails to SS?  Of course they did, but as I was doing nothing illegal, wasn't doing it around the child and not putting her at risk they could do nothing.

With regards to not gaining access to America, rightly or wrongly any one of us that travels to America and doesn't declare on the Visa that we are or have been a prostitute, are breaking American law.  We have to abide by those laws whether we like it or not, so the simple answer is, don't go to America and if you want to then don't prostitute'.

I'm not saying that I think it's right that you are refused access but that's the way it is.  I can't give blood because of what I did and that's wrong too.

She hit the media as she is famous, I am sure if I was outed or any run of the mill prostitute it wouldn't hit the media.

I wasn't aware I badgered you any more than I would question ANYONE who I didn't agree with. I post what I feel regardless of who says something and don't seek you out to pick on! In fact I am sure we have agreed on plenty before.

All I was saying was that I felt the vibe of your post was a bit dismissive regarding the difficulties if being out in this industry in the current world we live in. Maybe I should have worded my response better so it didn't sound like a personal attack.

I agree that we *should* be able to be out and proud without repercussions  but  that's not the case and your posts come across (maybe you don't meant to) of 'well if I can do it everyone should' which I feel is unfair and far too simplistic.

Being "outed" is not fun!

I do think it is such a complex situation, working, not being ashamed, but fearing a backlash of sorts if your identity is known, may that be in regards to family, friends, work, education and so on.

A true swine threatened this last year, i was SO scared, not due to being ashamed, hey, I like fun, and like to be paid for it, but more so, the reactions of others, would they look at me in "same" light, then again, who is to say they look at me in "good" light now :D

I think my uni knew, they did not care as long as I made my installments on time, heck, many in HE are doing some kind of "erotic" work, may that be, lap dancing, domming, subbing, escorting, webcam, phone chat and so on.

My landlord knew but again, did not care as long as I was not in yer face and paid my rent.

As they say, money talks, and be discreet.

If a lady has children, I do think and feel that the stakes are higher, the lady concerned may not be ashamed/bothered, but children in the mix?

More thought possibly.

Of course it would, it would only be the local media though not the national or international media.

The point I was getting at was they can take an award away from her but never the fact that she won it in the first place.

Oh I dunno, I guess that depends on if they also pick up on the tone of your favourite forum. **Local man fervent advocate of misogynistic values sex forum** dont think your shit doesnt stink enough for some one to catch its whiff if they are desperate enough for a story.

Fortunatley for me I have no real job to be sacked from and Im not on the PTA nor do I run the local guides club so as far as WGs go Im pretty shock horror free plus I blur my entire face and have a different colour hair now..mmm forethought is a fab thing x

I remember reading an article a little while back that listed quite a few former pro athletes, former olympics stars/medal winners now working as escorts.

The article was more about how these people spend so much of their lives acheiving excellence, then when they are past competing age have hit big financial difficulties because they no longer have an income.Athletics seems to be a fickle game.

As for removing her award. Her achievments havent changed.American sensibilities always make me chuckle.Their puritanical values yet two of their biggest products are porn and pot
