Hiv Testing

3 posts in this topic

People who are concerned that they might have HIV will soon be able to find out whether or not they are infected in the comfort of their own homes, officials are to announce.

At present it is illegal in the UK to do a HIV test at home and read the result yourself - people can take a sample themselves, send it off for testing in a laboratory and receive the result at a later date.

But officials are planning to change the outdated laws so people can perform a simple saliva test at home which will quickly give the user a "negative" or a "positive indication" result.

Interesting article - "Illegal" means if you do it you can find yourself in the dock, and (if convicted) get a criminal record. Yahoo's top quality journalist evades, furtively, naming the Statute, or subordinate legislation that allegedly makes it criminal for a punter, sitting on his own sofa in front of his own TV, to stick a swab into his own mouth, and then watch for it to change colour!

I guess that it is NOT illegal for a punter to do his own test. It is, possibly, however, forbidden for the High Street chemist to sell the test kit over the counter. If a friend brings a kit back today from (probably) California, and gives it to a UK punter, the punter, using it commits IMHO no offence.

Equally what the journo does, correctly, say, but without sufficient amplification, is that such a screening test only gives "an indication".

If someone is worried, after a drunken bareback episode, he (she) needs to test negative every couple of weeks for at least three months, to be relatively sure he/she is safe.
