How Many Working Girls Are There In The Uk?

75 posts in this topic

I have been a punter since the dark days when adverts first started appearing in the local-papers.

During this time the respect and gratitude I have for all wonderful the working-girls we have in the

UK has continued to grow.

This is the first of a number of related topics on which I seek the benefit of the combined experience of the Forumites with the aim of showing the beneficial effects of their work.

I will start each post with my answer to the question and my reasoning behind it.

Ths is just as a catalyst for further discussion.

This morning AW lists 22955 profiles. Of course not all of these are genuine, but 13350 have logged in this week. About 70% have at least some real feedback.

So I reckon there are around 12000 genuine profiles on there.

So now I have to guess how many local-paper and agency girls there are who dont use AW.

I am excluding "street-walkers" and other exploited girls. I am thinking of the kind of organised professional that any of us on here regularly books.

I am going to suggest that for every genuine AW profile there are three girls working some other way.

This means as a handy round figure, 50000 working girls that I might book today somewhere in the UK.

The number cannot be as low as 5000 nor as high as half a million. Maybe its 100000.

What do you all think?

If you think this is boring, trust me it leads to an amazing final conclusion so to speak.

but remember many girls dont work every day.  So of your estimate of 100,000, maybe half are not working today but may well be next thursday.

There are also agency girls. Most of our big cities have several agencies with any number of girls on their books. As has been said above not all girls work every day but it is reasonable to assume that any girl on an agency website does actually work. Just for example in the Tyne/Tees area there are perhaps 200-250 agency girls but there are no parlours there.

My guess is 100,000+

The Home Office "Paying the Price" consultation on prostitution in 2004 used the estimated number of 80,000, which itself was  taken from a 1999 survey/estimate.

we have to be careful about double counting.  girls may have an AW profile as well as appearing on agency or parlour websites.

but lets take the figure of 100,000 as the best PN guesstimate.

lets assume half of them work each day.

and each see 4 clients each

that means today there will be 200,000 punts

now assume punters punt on average once per month

that means there are 6 million punters. thats punters who are active now.  God knows how many retired ones there are.

Is that true or is there a massive hole in my logic?

I suspect that your numbers and logic are flawed but taking it a few flawed steps further;

200,000 punts * £60 (as an average price) = £12 million a day.

Say 50% of this business is on the black.

£6 million * 365 days = £2190 million a year.

Lost revenue to the Exchequer at say 25% tax rate = £547.5 million.

That pays for a few Doctors, nurses or another pointless war.

This is a light hearted post :)

just been down the high street looking for a Milletts. I feel I need a new Anorak.

But if we are going to go the distance on this, its likely to need no less than a Snorkel Parka, flask and sandwiches and a camping chair.

Quite possibly a calculator and a reporters jotter.

In this unregulated industry its virtually impossible to be sure how many WGs there really are in my view, and even harder to be sure how many punters there are as many keep it to themselves. I have read figures of 100,000 before but no idea how that figure was reached.

Bear in mind the 80-20 rule: roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes, thus 80% of anything will be consumed by 20% of the consumers, eg 80% of beer will be drunk by 20% of beer drinkers, 80% of books bought will be bought by 20% of readers, and so on.  So 80% of punts will be made by 20% of punters (approximately).

I suspect your average of 1 punt a month, while it will seem reasonable to many here, is probably too low as there will be a minority of punters punting considerably more often than that and skewing the average (even taking into account the punters who punt less often than once a month).

It's a little bit like the census, how accurate is that, especially given the number of hmm, illegal immigrants, which maybe correlates to the number of WGs?

And some people swap what they do, working for an agency, and doing some independent work as well. There is so little decent research tho, which of course means that those moralists who want to criminalize can claim whatever they want about numbers. An oft quoted stat is that street workers make up 8 to 20% of the total, but only street workers are ever researched.

You are also forgetting the beloved rule of 10 much used by activists. " only one in ten cases are ever reported......." so that means your 100, 000 figure must mean there are a million service providers out there. And we poor punters have so little time and money to sample them. Sigh.

Woman's Hour reported an estimated 50, 000 EE girls some years ago. At an average number of clients per year at £60 a popo, that would be 600 to 800 Million a year leaving our UK economy...

Only if they don't pay tax and NI :)

But there will be a few ££££'s for the VAT on the condoms :)

One thing I do know is HH and others like her should look at these figures and realise just how many of the voting population they are ostracising and also how much unpaid revenue (tax) could be available if they made it mainstream and LEGAL right across the board.

Agreed, but that would require such a change in mindset that I don't think the hypocrites in Westminster (many of whom have no doubt availed themselves of an escorts service), or the general public could cope with it.  "What, you mean these women aren't brutalised victims forced in to selling themselves and living a life of misery?.  They're doing it of their own free will? Then why have you and the Church and the rest of the Establishment been feeding us your moralistic crap for so many years?"

Don't blame the church for all of it.  I was a whore, my sister is a practising minister and accepts me (after a lot of soul searching) for who I am.  I have to say this *and I doubt it will go down well*.  But the problem is not with the whores.  It's with the men that visit them and try to pretend they don't.  When the day comes that you guys stand up and admit you need us, that will be the day we can hold our heads up high.

Sorry Holly but I'm worried you misread my post.  When I said "you" I was referring to Government.  The whole point I was making was that the problem is not with the "whores", it's with the rest of society, of which the church is but one part.  And if society as a whole accepted prostitution as a valid service then men wouldn't feel they have to pretend they don't make use of that service.  There'd no longer be any need for the hypocrisy
