So Unnecessary! Get An Accountant And Pay Your Tax, Jeez!

Yes its not smart to try to diddle the taxman, they can catch up with a person at any time and back date whats owed to them. Of course she didnt HAVE to come to London to work as a WG as her defence implied, she chose to do that and become a WG, or if she didnt its not mentioned in mitigation in this link.

I have zero sympathy for tax cheats whoever they are.

Another case when tabloids rehashing an old news, without any updates to it. Slow day in the office.

It was discussed here when it was originally published:  http://www.punternet.com/forum/index.php/topic/25442-tax/?&pid=420614#entry420614

I am sure it was few other threads also, regarding this article.

It has been updated to now include the POCA decision, i couldnt see that mentioned in the link you give here.

So easy to keep things straight. Lots of accountants look after escorts' taxes, and the IR just wants our money, not judge our morals, as an accountant for what was then the Midland Bank Trust Company once explained to me, when I was a bit embarrassed about asking for help with my tax return. I understand illegal immigrants having to fly under the radar, but that's another story.

We get so many allowances, from accommodation to advertising, clothes, hairdressing, beauty treatments from bikini was to manicures, web design services, cleaning expenses, even flowers for the boudoir. If she had taken advice from an accountant, he would have told her she'd be on the "tax map" once the stamp duty on the property was registered, and once you own property you're a sitting duck. It's a business - pay tax on it, or you can never save into an ISA or pension, or buy a property.

As far as I understand it you can't claim for hair dressing, beauty treatments!

This is certainly old news but it does my heart good to be reminded that HMRC are, very seldom, on the ball.

I remember when it hit the press that the multi-millionaire Lord Levy was paying 5k a year in tax. I was totally disgusted at the time, since I was paying more than that

Its surprising how thick some intelligent people are, paying cash for property while pleading penury. No need to register as an escort, plenty of other freelance type of jobs, you can claim to do, make-up artist, nanny, hairdresser. For all the talk of the tax man coming after you, truth is they are far too busy, just give them a reasonable amount, , dont flaunt your wealth, its tip offs that start most investigations. Unless you have learning difficulties, you dont need an accountant.. Not after the first year anyway.

Whilst I agree she was a silly billy for not paying tax I do feel they have been too harsh with her. I reckon they're making an example of her, to demonstrate how heavy handed they can be. She doesn't deserve to go back to prison, she's not a danger to anyone. I declare, but don't list escort as my profession. Even though they say it's completely confidential I have doubts about how that can be guaranteed. I declare as something similar enough so I can justify certain bits and pieces on expenses. I had an investigation a few years ago, it was rumoured to be a tip off. Even though I'd done nothing wrong it still was a horrible experience that dragged on for 18 months.

You say that, but on the other hand, weren't people given custodial sentences during the London riots? Yes, special circumstances but one girl was sent down for literally being an 'opportunist' for stealing water. I considered that incredibly harsh at the time, but when I thought about it, it made sense. Those streets were law less and they were being made an example of, as much for the deterrence effect.

In this case, she has stolen 10' of 1000's of pounds from the taxman. Financial fraud on that scale indirectly effects everybody.

As has already been mentioned by one WG, there are plenty of ways any woman could employ an account, pay their taxes and still maintain a very high standard of living. I know some women who do this, but they are a tiny minority of the women I've punted, where this has been discussed. I would be better if the whole thing was legalised, including brothels, industry regulated with safeguards for women and taxes paid. I am sure there are many women who would not want that, however.

What is "display profession"? I did tried to google, but could not find anything relevant.

As far as I know an according to an excellent  http://www.taxrelief4escorts.co.uk/ site,  expenses which have a mixed personal as well as a business purpose are not allowable.

......you can’t claim for hairdressing, manicures, colonic irrigation or plastic surgery.

If anybody missed blog from Jolyon previously about this case, you can read it here, as it certainly more to the case, then sensationalist headlines. I personally believe that income was not from escorting, or she ever was an escort in the first place.

On three occasions somebody has come from the tax office and helped me.  The first was on leaving college I went to work in a garage and his affairs were in such a state I had to get the tax man out to help me sort it, which he did.  The second was when I worked within the entertainment industry, on this occasion by the time the taxman had finished *this was sitting in my living room* on paper I was only earning 39 pence an hour, on that occasion he had  large files on other artists we had worked with and was trying to get information about them which I wasn't happy about.  The third time was in my second year as an SP, that time I went to the tax office and went through everything and again I was asked questions about other girls I had worked with.  Don't assume the taxman doesn't know about you because they certainly seemed to know a fair bit about my affairs and those of my friends and work colleagues, and don't be frightened to ask them for help either because they will help.

Scary stuff... But like it's been said before, there are plenty of vice accountants out there so there is no need to be afraid of asking for help. Rather stay under the radar, pay what you need and be relaxed about it. Remember, they're closing in...

I know you meant: "nice" accountants. Freudian slip? ;-)

My apologies, Zhivago: Scrap it. I've read it wrong. Sorry.
