Perceptions Of The Industry

19 posts in this topic

It has been pointed out on this board that people have a poor understanding of the commercial sex industry.  Do you believe this poor understanding extends to sexual health and people with no contact with the industry believe STDs are rife.  The comedian Howard Russell said a joke on his show Good News about what businesses should really be called and he joked massage parlours should be called the next day itch.  Do believe this attitude towards the industry is typical when in reailty the industry has a good record when it comes to sexual health.

He was just getting a cheap laugh and his joke was weak.

This industry is an easy target for cheap jokes and lazy humour. We are unable to fight back since there will be almost no punter and very few SP's who are prepared to put their heads above the parapet.

We insiders are aware of the generally good record, but it will have to remain a secret to the general public, who will go along with the preconceptions fed to them by the press.

I think people contract STIs in pretty much the same way unwanted pregnancies come about - they get drunk and careless. Sex workers are mostly sober, simply because our lives may depend on us having our wits about us (and walking in stilettos is really, really hard when pissed  :) ).

Unfortunately, the public perception of us is that we're all abused, addicted and dysfuntional victims with no sense of control over our lives, and that our punters are freaks and weirdos who couldn't get laid without paying. We all know how massively far from the truth that is, but to disabuse people of those stereotypes we'd have to "out" ourselves.

I suspect quite a few of those "comedians" taking cheap shots at us because they think there's something hilarious about the clap, are punters themselves. We'll probably never shed the image of the disease riddled whore, simply because it's reassuring to think of us as "other" i.e. not normal. Plus, other targets of so-called humour are fighting back nowadays - comics can no longer joke about the disabled, homosexuals, women drivers - racist jokes and anti-muslim "jokes" are out, and boring mother-in-law jokes get you booed off the stage. So, let's laugh at diseased hookers instead...  cheap and lazy, but targeting the one group that won't fight back. Money for old rope, isn't it?

I have never come across a single person who has caught anything from another party re punting, but I hear stories from my children about their friends catching Chlamydia.

Society can go and fuck itself!

I live in an age where an Old Lady has to decide as to whether she should buy a loaf of bread and a tin of baked beans or have the Heating on for the Day in Winter. It's Obscene!

The Prime Minister of my country is the member of a club where the initiation ceremony is to burn a £50 in front of a Homeless person.

But hey lets target the Sex industry cos it's easy and were all a bit thick.

I have no stats to back up my point so this is just guesswork really, but id assume women who get laid regularly at week-end in civvie life and in Ibiza etc are almost certain to be riddled with STI's.

Ive never been to ibiza as it seems to be a haven for chavs (no offence to any of you who like going but just my view), but all my friends who have been (8 male, 3 female) have come back and been infected. They tell me as my father a chemist so they hope i can sort out antibiotics, which obviously i cant. But the thought of going to GUM clinic is very embarrassing for many people.

However, i think sti's is an increasing probleem in the sex industry. Ive noted over past two years that alot of escorts seem happy to go bareback, even if they do not advertise it. Persoanlly i never go bb and i always have condoms with me, but it does worry me this relaxation towards bareback. There are loads openly offering bareback.

The girls ive found to be the most relaxed are in fact the educated ones. Ive punted a few law students who escort to fund their degree and vocational course before they train to be lawyers and they never go to get a condom, which amazes me.

I find ladies who work for agencies are alot more professional.

I don't know which ladies you are going with but I can assure you plenty of independent ladies are professional and would not dream of going condomless.

I agree with you, but there are also an increasing number who go without. I dont understand why, maybe it is the influx of Romanians?

Ah yes, those pesky Romanians again! Difficult to know what we'd do without them when we need a spot of scapegoating and cultural stereotyping..

Every Romanian advert has clearly fake pictures and woeful English on their profiles unless their pimp has written it. I wont see them, but the chaps i know who have all have had awful experiences.

If anyone knows of a decent Romanian lady, im happy to be proven wrong!

I wonder if the BB thing is age-related? I ask because of the reference in Skybluefan'spost to students.  I have seen a similar development with young men in the gay community who seem to treat STDs with an insouciance that those of us who remember the advent of HIV and safe sex in the 80s find disturbing.  Their rationale, when challenged, was that the drugs are really good these days and widely available, so if you catch anything it can be easily sorted.

I also agree with the comments about the risks of civvie life, with its multiple, drunken/drugged contacts. I would far rather take my custom to those ethical providers who take care to understand the issues and not put themselves and their clients at risk. In my experience, an encounter with a carefully selected provider when both parties gel, physically and intellectually, is far more satisfying on many levels than the random outcome of a night getting drunk in a meat market.

Yes i agree completely. The days of pullin in clubs being fun have gone as a) as you say the risks are not worth it B) there is no challenge now, every woman out there seems to be gagging for it c) getting free time with an escort far more rewarding and harder to achieve

I was reading about Bug Chasers and found it to be very much disturbing. Not sure if it is true or not as it was on 4 chan.

My dear skybluefan,

There should be an apostrophe between the "n" and the "t" of "won't."

The first person singular pronoun should be routinely capitalised, not just at the start of a sentence.

And oh look, you managed to make both mistakes in the space of two letters in the last sentence, "im" is not only missing the capital "I" but the apostrophe as well.

Yours, etc,

Crowescu
