Phoenix was another contact mag i recall, i had an accomodation address in those days to get this and porn vids sent to. I also did indirect contact which you might recall where you had to send the mag your contact info for them to pass on to the woman, it wasnt a quick process. I mainly located WGs from my local papers or newsagents cards in their windows. Then off to the phonebox to call them, if i could find one working, in my area they were either broken, burnt out, had piss or even shit in them a lot of the time.

I used small ads in the local paper and sometimes the Daily/Sunday Sport. I also used massage parlours much more back then.

This has been covered before. Phoenix, New Delilah and Jezebel (but not Rendezvous that was sort of indirect contact I think) were the three main ones for the Midlands and all came from the same source (there was a lonnnng discussion about where they came from - most likely was Nottingham although i insisted I had bumped into the bloke who was the contact for SPs putting in their adverts when he asked me where a house was that turned out to be his new base in Handsworth and Brum/Wolves/Walsall was the main location for meets.

I thought it all worked very well. I can't recall an awful attempt to book a lady or an awful meeting though my memory may have erased those.

Not many stars in each edition but lovely when you spotted one.

I once had three pics of different girls in the same edition after they asked me to take some for them.

They were £7 each then which seemed a lot and the last time I looked they were still £7, which seems a lot.

Way way back there were the Soho walk ups  and discreet cards in newsagents windows. The first modern day"contact mag" (the was Harris's list of Covent Garden Ladies published in 1757) was the Ladies Directory which was available under the counter in Soho. Shaw, the publisher was convicted of conspiracy to corrupt the public morals and living on the earnings of prostitution!  Getting the phone numbers was one challenge, ringing them was another. No mobile phones and the old fashioned push button A phone boxes.

Then local papers were my main source, although the terminology was confusing. The pimilico news was a good one for London. The evening standard/news carried escorts, yellow pages in hotels also.

The contact mags so much better as had pics otherwise pretty much a pig in a poke (or vice versa) until sighting the lady let the cat out the bag.

I remember my first holiday to London (I'm was still in America) and seeing all the cards in the phone boxes! They were fascinating to me. I took some back to show some of the WG's I worked with back in Berkeley.

Yep I too remember the phone box cards and built quite a collection of them at the time. I used to use these and the daily sport for my fun times

Often though in my experience the pictures were so bad i couldnt actually tell if the WG was attractive or not.

I must have been a viewer a little later than you as I could tell the cute ones (especially if I took the pics) but yes some views were not designed to be at all revealing, which while privacy is understandable, makes having a pic pretty pointless..

Given AW, nothing new there tho.

I knew a Wolverhampton girl who went to work in London for a while and the cards she brought back to show me had different completely random images none of which looked the slightest bit like the girl herself.

But as everyone except the complete newbies knew this, I suppose it made no odds.

Having been in MK for such a long time the citizen used to be the place for me, but I do recall some of the most awful punts ever and one I still recall today is when I came the girl said "you needed that" as if she really understood me.

When I found a good escort I stuck to her and recall escorts1 used to be an angel - Japanese called Chloe who was amazing, if only more of them gorgeous Asian girls were around.

All I can say is thank god for punternet, made life so much easier.

I have a copy of Harris's List and met Hallie Rubenhold who brought it to the public attention again, I introduced myself as Dollymopp and she knew who I was! We are twitter buddies now. Also, I have a copy of The Rangers Impartial List of the Ladies of Pleasure in Edinburgh (1775), though my copy is 1970, also...on loan...Ladies Directory! Mostly Soho flats, It's all in black and white with photos too. I'm going to do a blog post on it soon.

My first foray was the penpal section of the Sunday Sport which was new at the time. When I came to London, it was all newspaper ads, phone boxes and newsagents windows. I used to design and print the ads for the parlour I worked in, and printed out piles of them for the madam to distribute to shops etc. : )

It was all a bit hit and miss. I had a few dreadful punts going off phone box cards, but I discovered several real gems, too. Laura, a busty blonde in Waterloo, Jackie, pretty with heavy 'torpedo shaped' boobs, best tit-fucks I ever had. Both found through ads in newsagents windows. Looking back on it, I even has my first Oriental encounter with Mitsu, who used newsagents, too, advertising as 'Tropical Schoolgirl'. She was Malaysian or something, at the time a long way from the busty Brits I originally sought comfort with when I started punting. Ah, nostalgia, eh?

The local evening paper, had a section titled escorts, I remember looking at the ads for weeks and weeks before finally plucking up the courage to ring one of the numbers, I asked for details no services were mentioned but the description she gave herself pulled me right in.
