Converting Tape To Cd

9 posts in this topic

Hi guys,

Okay my ex has a load of camcorder mini tapes and there is a lot of footage of my children on them when they were a lot younger. Its taken several years and i still have not received the copies of these he said he was going to convert to cd for me.

His excuse is the cost.

Are there cheap and easy ways to convert mini tape to CD?

It's DVD you probably want to use. If you have a copy of iDVD on your Mac (they've stopped including it on more recent versions of Mac OSX, but it is still possible to find a download) and a way of connecting your camcorder to the computer then there is a simple "One Shot" method of reading the footage off the tape and converting it to a DVD.

There are quite a few services about that will do it for you.If you want to do it yourself there used to be various machines you could buy/combination players, unfortunately they seem to be old hat nowdays with most relying on video capture software coupled with analogue to digital cables.

NUmber one thing to do is: get the tapes and store them somewhere safe! Then if the video camera still works and is available, play them on the camera plugged into a hard disk recorder, transfering them to the HDD and then to DVD. Make a few copies of each.

We're a little short on info here.

1  You say they are on mini-tapes.  Do you know if they are analogue (VHS-C) or digital (mini-DV or similar)?

2  What kind of computer are you intending to use?  (Windows or Mac)

3  There are 'a load of tapes'.  Do you have a rough idea of total time and/or number of tapes?

Your aim is to get a digital version of the tapes onto your computer.

If they are already digital it is just a question of getting a suitable cable to connect the camcorder to the computer and running a program (there are many to choose from) to make a copy of the data on your computer.

If they are analogue, as pollyp23 says, the easy way is to use a DVD recorder connected to the camcorder via a scart lead.  Beware - not all DVD recorders can record from a scart lead input.   It is possible, but more fiddly, to connect the camcorder direct to a computer.

You don't NEED to put the final output onto a DVD.  You can keep the digital version on your computer and play it back from there.  Keeping a copy on a removable hard drive (or 2) is also wise.  (Use as many different storage methods as you can - remember all those floppies you used to process?)

If you decide to write them to a DVD there are programs which will let you add headings, titles, menus etc.  DVD players can be a bit unforgiving if you don't get the format just right.

Or you can get some random guy on ebay to do it for under a fiver per tape.  If you do this I'd make sure the originals were returned.

No, seriously, its why I said get them copied in some way, then you can decide what/how/when to sort them out.

This is your past, whether its your kids, his kids, you shagging, it doesn't matter, just get ot backed up and safe. :-)

My Panasonic mini-DV camcorder has a small socket on it marked as i-DV.  (Sony call it i-Link).  This is just a smaller version of the Firewire socket which I assume your mac has got.  You should be able to get a cable to join them.

I'm not familiar enough with mac software to suggest what program to use but on windows you can run a prog to copy all the tape straight to the hard drive unaltered.  Then, as and when you get round to it, you can edit and save the results (which is the bit I still haven't finished).

There's a free program called vlc (https://www.videolan.org/vlc/#download) which is brilliant at playing pretty much any format of video on any platform (including tablets and phones).

Over to you now.  Get hold of the tapes and, if you can, the camcorder (and charger).
