Prostitution: What's The Harm? Bbc3 10Pm Tonight

6 posts in this topic

This programme tonight might be interesting. It's at 10pm repeated Tuesday morning at 1:35 am.

Documentary examining young people's attitudes to prostitution - from the men who pay for sex, to the women who sell it. The programme also looks at the changing nature of the industry, and examines the strength of politicians' arguments to ban it entirely. Presented by Billie JD Porter

I will be tuning in.

I was all set to be a part of that program too until I heard it was Billie Porter. Just, no.

I remembered the program on sex she did where she basically stood and sniggered at the participants and looked down her nose.

Let's hope she's grown up.

I've just watched this on catch up.

In the main I thought it good. There was far too much attention paid to young punters so it didn't capture quite the full flavour of the experience of 66 yo farts like me.

However, there was quite a lot said to reinforce the view many of us have that the brothel laws are unhelpful in terms of safety. And one of the girls painted a rather more charitable view of the likes of older punters like me who don't turn up pissed as a fart etc. etc.

It was actually quite fair. There was a clear divide between WGs who did it by choice and those who did from addiction as street walkers. I thought it was very important that there was a clear divide. They should also have had segment on highly informed punters like us and also the the issues of control/traffic

I rather felt the sex workers in Prague are earning their money the hard way. All those young drunk lads hunting in packs, and stag parties full of idiots trying to outdo each other in terms of alcohol consumption must be very tedious. One of the women, who has a 13 year old son to raise, may very well have done the job voluntarily, but loathed it all the same, and looked as though she needed valium to come in to work. Tattoo lady effectively used it for self promotion, therefore is unreliable in terms of having a measured contribution to make. The only interesting thing she said was that it's safer to not work alone. Who'd have thunk it, eh? Duh.

The very attractive mature blonde giving advice on how to run a brothel was hilarious, reassuring viewers that they were not likely to get busted running a brothel provided they stick to certain rules regarding drugs, under-age girls, not annoying the neighbours etc., having herself been busted 6 times and thrown in the towel. The toothsome young presenter was quite lazy, ever so slightly sneery, and the piece lacked any kind of intellectual rigour or intelligent analysis.Wheeling out a few potato faces who reckon it's ok to pay for sex over a slice of Domino's is hardly adding anything useful to the debate. The usual cheaply produced, insulting up-skirt peek at a few WGs, and a former junkie trying to scrape a living on the stand-up circuit by getting the men to admit to using porn and paying for sex. That's his act?? Sad, really - we deserve better.
