Bbc3 10.00Pm Tonight 17Th Mar Prostitution:what's The Harm?

Could be worth watching, it may be the usual clichés of trafficked women etc, but you never know, miracles could happen...

I was quite impressed with it. I thought it a fairly balanced view aimed at the uninformed. Well done BBC.

Yes, I agree with that. For once, a reasonably-balanced and informative piece. :)

I was surprised how well balanced the programme was. I did expect a lot more focus on the negatives. Well done BBC.

Really well done and lots of pats on the back for Becky.   Seriously this is the first time I've actually seen any presenter put the safety and real interests of the sex worker first.  Good luck to the girl with the tat's, reckon her business will go through the roof.

I tuned in at the point Billie Porter was setting up her own brothel. However this ended up being nothing more than a practical demonstration for television :-(

Even without the offer of biscuits, I would have been there in a heartbeat.

I was expecting a same old same old programme on this subject  but I found it to be one of the better offerings.

Very brave of those guys to face the camera and admit to paying for sex..... and they weren't all drunk.

While the tattooed girl will not now be able to cope with her increase in business I feel it should also have showed a more mature escort who was not painted and pierced....but could pass in the street as anyone's mother or neighbour.... (me :) ) then it would have given a broader vision of who actually goes into this business.  We saw that some of those in the pub quiz were not sure of the legalities.... just as some viewers could think the average wg looks like Miss K.

The brothel issue....... perhaps the powers that be are so wary of legalising them because it could lead to houses with trollops hanging out of the windows and queues of men half way along the street.

Why on earth don't they just make the damn thing legal.... but with a limit of 2 or 3 girls at any one time within a premises.

Because they are blinkered and can't see the whole picture. The girl with the tat's was upfront with her earning capability. I mean this in the nicest possible way but *I'm trying to be nice here as I really can't see this lady as being up there with the highest earners in this industry*, she was openly boasting £1200+ a week earnings, that was pretty much off AW alone and if she isn't declaring, which she must be, because of the programme, then she is laughing all the way to the bank. Others will earn a hell of a lot more.

In my time I did declare my earnings and invested a hell of a lot of the money I earned, but have to say I get seriously, and I mean *seriously* pissed off, because lots of women in this business don't and/or are on benefits/drugs etc, and that in my mind is why those in this industry will never be taken seriously!!!

If the women are working to their optimum earning capability and paying their way legally, then surely they should and must have far more monetary respect/power. How many voting men have paid to see these ladies at the end of the day? Should that not be a question the powers that be that are looking for votes should be asking?

The £1200 was for a 3 day tour after expenses, she also mentioned earning £1k a week solely on camming, and more for escorting, they also stated she paid tax and had an accountant.

They didn't mention that Adultwork take 30% of those earnings, which from £89000 is quite a large sum.

Maybe I saw too many documentaries of this genre but I was not impressed.  I switched off at the point they concentrated on the street girls.  So depressing!!!!  I found Billie Porter's documentaries on South America more interesting though.

That is not a lot.  She could have easily made £400 a day if she stayed at home.  The lady also blogged that she gave up touring as too many time wasters and no shows.

1K a week on webcamming.... no way.  Impossible. She would have to be sitting glued to her seat for 24 hours a day to do that and she said she only did around 4 hours.

I recall she showed a balance on screen of her total earnings from AW ...... but over how long a period?  and as Strawberry says.... just over a third goes straight into AW's pocket.

I think there was a chunk of boasting/exaggeration going on.  Much like that programme a while ago on phone sex workers saying they made hundreds a week....

What you say makes perfect sense.  There were lots of documentaries in the last decade and not only, where the girls were hardly honest, so you have to read between the lines.

I made a rule of not trusting anything but always keeping an open eye.

She said something about it being over a 2 year period, so £45000 each year, £15000 to AW. I'm wondering if the screen figure was before or after the charges for advertising?

They said the 89 grand was over 2 years for camming.

I didn't think it was too bad in comparison to other things I have watched and it is important to remember that it is aimed at a younger generation and not more mature people.  The bit that let let it down in my eyes was the very end statement, where she stated that it didn't matter if you were working on the street or high class a sex worker had a high chance of suffering physically or emotionally.  I think that was unfair and not represented in the rest of the show, so why say it?

Well of course, it is a business for them. There is no such thing as free advertising on there! £1 a day to show your number, £1.50 to pay for local escorts, £5 a day to show as available today and 30% to withdraw anything you make on private galleries, movie clips or webcamming or marketplace sales. Very few directories for escorts are free.

Similarly, I was a tad disappointed that the young presenter concentrated on young punters. The fearsome looking tattooed WG trotted out the much used "older clients are more respectful" line, but apart from that, the more mature punter was not really represented.

Ah well, it doesn't detract from an overall positive impression though.

Thing is though, a documentary on prostitution that ignored the street scene would open itself to criticisms of bias and lack of balance. I think it was to the programmes benefit that it acknowledged the problematic end of the spectrum and disn't paint all prostitutes as "happy hookers". In total, the street scene only took up about 10 mins of the hour long programme, which seemed fair to me.
