Any Updates On The Sauna Scene In Edinburgh

I presume the council has withdrawn its licensing system, so what is the situation now?

So far nothing has changed.

Seriously, nothing at all has changed from the point of view of customer and sauna. Behind the scenes, the saunas may be operating as any other business such as a tattoo parlour or sandwich shop perhaps, paying their business taxes and bills correctly and on time, but not having the entertainment licences they had before.

There is a slight trend in more EU sexy workers and fewer UK sexy workers in a couple of these places, but this is not a trend related to the licensing changes, more a general trend in every town.

And there is a little frisson of excitement as a customer not knowing if this is the day they get raided ( the reception of Blair St assured me there is no risk for at least 4 more months, though I didn't question how he knew ).

To summarise, nothing has changed. Yet.

And now, we wait. Little comfort to those who have no idea when the door will next be kicked in.

I'm making a wild assumption that Gentle Rock is closed. I've tried to call and the love is dead. A bit of a dive but I've had 2/3 of my best oral experienced there and some really great times (and poor, it has to be said, but largely Great)

I went to Blair Street Sauna a couple of weeks ago,  three visits over two days.  The lady at the front is Russian and very pleasant. The place is clean and well run and a good choice of girls who sit in a 'waiting room' and you can just chat,  they are not pushy at all.  One was local and a couple of the others were Ukrainian or Russian.  The first day I went I chose a girl who called herself Jenny and said she was from Barcelona. She wasn't, and I'd guess from her accent that she is Colombian. Never quite sure why they lie about their nationality specially when they must know that anyone who speaks Spanish, which is not an unusual language, will pick up the accent, it's a bit like a Scot pretending he's from Cornwall.  She also knew virtually nothing about Barcelona.

Anyway she was pretty and had a good body and a sweet way about her and I had a good punt.  So good that I went back a couple of hours later for round two and enjoyed it even more.

Next day I went back and she wasn't there, a couple of others from the day before there. There was one particularly unpleasant girl who called herself Tiffany and said she was French (but wasn't, although she was unpleasant enough to have been French!) and was rude and sarcastic when I spoke to her in French. I complained about her attitude to the lady in the front who seemed to take it quite seriously, and I said if it hadn't been for my experiences with Jenny the day before I would have walked out then and there.

I chose a girl called Roberta who said she was Italian (but wasn't ...... I'd say 99% that she was Romanian or Moldovan.)  Quiet, sweet and stunning, very good English.  A great service too,  one of my best ever.  About the closest to a GFE I've enjoyed for a long time.  She is the jewel in the crown.  I thoroughly recommend Blair Street.

Steer clear of Tiffany though.  Nasty bit of work.

Was at the festival for the fringe, walked passed several of the Saunas  Alas was not able to visit any, I had company I could not get rid off.

The fringe, there were at least 4 sex work positive finge events on.  I was able to visit one, Coin Operated Girl.  5.00pm at the Liquid romm anex, was funny, though my wife did not think so.

There was another on stripping, and phone sex work.  The stripping one had a recomendation from Teela Saunders. Think these were at the Apex International hotel.

Finally there was one where two sisters described their sex life and feminism.  This was reviewed in the Guardian, with one line at the end which made the reviewers view of sex work very clear.

Walk into the room where Sister is playing and you could be forgiven for thinking that you have wandered into a lap-dancing club. Two women in red wigs are strutting provocatively around a silver pole. The women are real-life sisters, Rosana and Amy Cade. Rosana is a Glasgow-based lesbian performance artist and theatre-maker and Amy is a sex worker who lives in Berlin.

As they tell childhood stories and show family video footage, it becomes clear that these are two women who have always liked dressing-up and performing, even as kids. Being a woman often feels like a bit of a performance, and that's acknowledged as wigs and makeup are removed and Rosana's shaven head revealed.

There is so much that is fascinating, layered, difficult and joyous in a show that is full-frontal as it explores what it means to be a blood sister, and a sister in the feminist sense. There's some terrific stuff about the choices we make as women and how those choices are perceived by others, including those we love. There is a strong moment when Amy reads a letter she wrote to her mother.

The show's honesty is often compelling, but it sidesteps the fact that not all women sex workers have chosen their job, as Amy has done. There's no consistency of performance style, and while we hear a great deal from Amy, it would be nice to hear more about Rosana's life, too. The function of the childhood video snippets isn't always clear, sometimes creating a kind of nostalgia for lost innocence that I suspect is not intended. But it's a show with real potential and one that, in finally dismantling its own set, reminds us that how we present ourselves to the world can be a bit of an act.

Thank you for the review Elrond, excellent work

For anyone interested, the marvellous Union Kingdom's 3rd most famous punter ( after Rooney & Brand ) has a show on called

http://edinburghfestival.list.co.uk/event/408579-dangerfield-sex-with-children/

It's a shocking title. This has to be toned down surely as it's asking for trouble. But it's been playing to packed houses so far.

"Much more sensitive and deep than you'd ever imagine. Also hilarious. Still a wanker", to quote from one online review. I suspect few blokes in the national press will want to admit they've seen it.

I saw the personable Miranda Kane show 'Coin Operated Girl' show yesterday. This passive looking title doesn't really describe the show - about her 7 years as a full-figured escort in and around London where she seemed to be the one in control or at least doing mutually agreed weird stuff with her clients.

I loved it. There were quite a few couples in, so the crowd were a little quiet, so when asked if anyone knows what GFE or DFK mean, of course people know, but saladin can buy you a drink before you'll risk confessing this knowledge in a public arena with your beloved sat next to you. Fortunately there was a dude with what looked to be two girl-friends, happy to say he was a 'big internet fan' who chirped up the right answers, and got thoroughly ribbed for it.

He had a couple of failed guesses at the top answer to the 'what men really want top 10'. I liked the bit about the outcall hooker's suitcase ( from Wilko, where else ), the Yorkshire accent impression of a punter who writes reviews, the tip on how to retire, and also the big weird finish.

Earlier in the day I'd visited Blair Street Sauna and let the equally personable Daisy make me crazy for about the 20th time in 8 years. This sauna changed ownership earlier this year, and the uniforms have changed to tropical orange which the WGs have to take home and wash themselves. It's still business as usual with the worry that no-one really knows when they might be forcibly retired in the sense that the police could come calling at any time. The police have been once this year though, but it was an old style check-up to see if anyone was under-aged, getting any bother from punters, we are here if you need us type of thing.

That's what should be the real function of the police wrt the sex industry! Let's hope it continues like this!

Let's hope indeed ! If House has his way, I sincerely doubt it.

I visited Blair Street last week.

Lovely Roberta was away on 'long leave'.  Nasty Tiffany has apparently been thrown out although she was apparently very popular with customers and got a lot of repeat business.

So I saw a Bulgarian girl, Sandra, on two different days.  Lovely girl, I would have liked to have had a full hour with her but unfortunately both times I was on limited time.

The story continues . . .

Around 11 people have appeared in court in Edinburgh charged with managing a brothel and related offences

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-31718904

Almost all the saunas have some-one charged. London St and the two gay saunas are the best known ones not included.

Trials due to start from August 2015 onwards according to the piece.

At one level I expect it means the workers have 5 months in a safe practical working environment and not worrying about raids, though if guilty verdicts start to come in, I expect that would end in the autumn and they have to think about going solo ( more risks ) or getting other work. Perhaps the Lib Dems or Greens will be in government by then ( unlikely, but we can hope ).

I can't imagine there's been similar trials like these in the UK. It could go like this:

"You are charged with managing a brothel"

"Not guilty, I was managing a licensed sauna"

"Well that's the same thing is it not"

"Well that's for you to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. I can provide a reasonable doubt i.e. in the date period in question the council licensed it knowing what goes on there and never once said there is an equivalence between a licensed sauna and a brothel in the context of Edinburgh"

"Well what does go on there?"

"Are you old enough to be allowed out? Seriously, we provide a safe building, lighting, heating, showers, clean rooms, laundry service, kitchen, lockers, collect fees at the door, reception duties, pay local and national taxes, and much else"

"Well what goes on in the rooms?"

"That's between the workers and the customers"

It may depend on the make-up of the jury, some of whom may know what Edinburgh was like before licensing but I cannot imagine a conviction looking at the dates in question.

As of yesterday Scorpio was in operation with four ladies, Gemma, Tiffany, Lacey (who I think may have once been Bianca) and another whose name I didn't catch.

Mirabile dictu, both showers were working.

The other girl was probably Francesca. She's good fun in the room and has picked up a Scottish accent :)

All charges now dropped:

Police and taxpayers' time and money wasted, and workers operating under needlessly insecure conditions for over a year. For no net gain in public safety.

I was seriously chuffed when I read that article.  I've never worked in a sauna, but all the same, those Police Scotland raids seriously pissed me off when they happened.  Never would have happened under our old Lothian and Borders Police force.  Luckily, while Police Scotland may have officially taken over, it's still the same local lads (and lassies!) patrolling our streets - goddess bless them.  Love you lot!  xx

To answer the original question. I was back in Edinburgh for the festival for the first time in two years last week. Went to Blair Street and then for the first time to New Town. Nothing much had changed apart from a coat of paint at Blair Street and not all the girls being from Eastern Europe.

I pass Ambassadors several times a week and it looks very closed to me.The roller doors are always shut on the lothian rd entrance. So unless they are just using the rear doors then i think it has closed. The whole of lothian rd is getting gentrified now I don't think their is a single strip club left.
