So if prostitution was taxed at 20% that's  at least £1bn they are loosing in tax.   How much is ths country in the red ?

I wonder if an occasional visit to a lady of the night will be included in the 'basket of goods' that the ONS use for calculating inflation ?

£5.2 bn

approx 12.6M  males between the ages of 25 and 70    (  60m population  x  50%  x 42% from uk demograpgics wiki)

Thats £413  per male per year aged 25 - 70

hmmm  not insignificant really

One little thing I find interesting in there. Prostitution they refer to as illegal. So the casual reader is drawn to believe there is this £5.3 billion untaxed income floating around. However I am led to believe that most Working girls do file a tax return and the government has for many years profited from their work. So does that make George Osborne and his predecessors pimps? More importantly we could consider ourselves as providing a public service by contributing to the exchequer by such a large amount. We get taxed on our earnings and then get taxed again for having fun. I wonder if one day they will make all the girls register for VAT?

I thought that the revenue rules forbade collecting tax from illegal activities, since to do so would be condoning the illegality.

It is amazing what the revenue will do and where they will take their money from. They still view the act of prostitution as legal, but the running of a brothel as illegal. So it is legal as a prostitute to earn, it is just illegal for others to profit from those earnings. However the conundrum is, does the revenue, by taking tax from a working girls earnings, then break the law as they themselves are claiming revenue. When you have five minutes to catch your breath, with the stunning lady you have just had the pleasure of exercising to exhaustion, you could ask her about her tax return. I think you will find most ladies do declare their income. Tax avoidance carries a bigger penalty than working in the sex trade, as you know those who do not pay their taxes are the new pariah. Does not affect me, I am on PAYE so just pay, pay and pay.

my understanding is the HMRC will look at any activity that generates income and will seek to tax it, legal or ilegal.  Even robbery and drug dealing.

and people in the country illegally are still liable for tax.

It's quite settled in law that income earned from prostitution is taxable  - CIR v Aken [1990]. So how can HMRC be breaking the law by taxing it?

I wouldn't dream about asking a prostitute whether she pays tax. It's none of my business.

I presume escorts are no more or less honest about their taxes than any other self employed person

I never ask about a person's personal affairs, but I have quoted based on information that was volunteered to me during post coital chats.
