Moonfruit

20 posts in this topic

Hi

Asking on behalf of a friend:

A number of times the ability to create your own website using Moonfruit for free has been mentioned.

Are there tips that those with experience of this site are happy to pass on, please, to help make the friend's escort site as effective as possible from the start (without having access to any special programs or technical skills)?

Thanks for any help available and, yes, I will be passing them off as my own ideas in the hope of a texty kiss. :)

(Just woken up - mods please move to Techie stuff forum if more appropriate location)

Hi, moonfruit is fairly self explanatory. I did mine on moon fruit. Its a good idea to set up a 2nd site and just use it to fiddle around and try things out to see what happens, its free and you get it for two weeks before it has to go live or be deleted, bit like a rough book at school. pm me if you have any specific questions. Some of the bits can be a bit fiddly and I did have to ask one person to help me with something to complete mine.

Thanks a lot, Chloe. Would never have thought of the rough book idea for a start.

If this can be helpful, I've done mine on escortdesign.com without any help. Setup and display totally free, but you have an interesting paid option. I'm very happy with it so far :)

Thanks a lot, Chloe. Would never have thought of the rough book idea for a start.

If you look on moon fruit when you first log into it there is a "build my site" option. I never clicked it but I presume they will build your site for you if you opt for that. A lot of it is simply clicking, dragging, placing text boxes etc.

I think moonfruit has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years as a DIY website maker, but I personally prefer Wordpress. I think for what your friend might need it for, moonfruit would suffice.

Wordpress can be tricky to set up if you want your own unique domain name on a server, but the results i'd say are far more professional & flexible. I've built websites for clients who want their own domain name/server space & they can choose from a multitude of templates that can look amazing and relatively cheap to set up.

Any specific information on url would be helpful now that domain name has been mentioned.

Is there any issue about the url that can be a hiccup to numpty like me?

I think with Moonfruit's more premium packages from around £7 per month - you'll get a free domain name (which doesn't have a crappy yourwebsite.moonfruit.com suffix), plus some google extras for sales/advertising. Should be quite easy.

Oh I think she wants a free one rather than racking up payments for this site and that directory entry etc

Just double checked, with the free one, the website will be moonfruit branded (small badge & link to their site) - but I'm not sure how the domain name thing works. My guess would be that you'd have to buy a domain name and point it to the moonfruit URL.

The free package the website URL will be yourwebsite.moonfruit.com, unless you buy the higher package where they give you a proper domain name.

Hope that helps.

You can buy a domain name for as little as a few quid per year, under a tenner, then you can transfer them and link to the moon fruit site very easily.  I have the cheapest option with moon fruit, around £7 per month and its perfectly adequate for what I need. You can link blog, reviews, links to directories you are registered for free with as many offer a free reciprocal link option, aw, pretty much the full works. Don't forget to fill in the meta data though x

Buying a domain name from the same place as your website is a definite no no for me. If you want to change website provider then it can get nasty. ALWAYS buy you domain name yourself from someone different from your web provider. Its simple to link domain to website.

just wanted to clarify that for others.  a lot of people (not just in the sex industry) fall into that trap.

Would appreciate a heads up on buying a domain name.

Is there an idiot's guide and a steep by step explanation of dos and donts - sorry, completely new to me.

The separate provider point is again great and not something I would have thought about.

i have bought a few but for civvie use

You need to think of a memorable name. not too long either.

then consider what extensions you want

.com

.co.uk

loads of new ones.

then go and buy one

I use lcn.com

you type in your name in the search

i just put in ugly_tarts

it gives me a range of domain names and prices.  a .com is a lot more than a .co.uk

you tick the one you want and pay with plastic.  The longer you buy it for the cheaper per year it is.

once bought you enter the forwarding details.

your website will have a URL.  so you type this in the forwarding bit.  this means when someone types in ugly_tarts.co.uk, the forwarder then makes it as they had typed in ugly_tarts.moonfruit.com

then you can have some email addresses.  so you can make info@ugly_tarts.co.uk be forwarded to vivluvsme@warmmail.com

and sales@uglytarts.co.uk go to coventrypunter@warmmail.com.  but if you reply the person will then know your warmmail address.

You may want to buy .com and .co.uk to stop someone else getting the one you dont buy and affecting your business.  There is nothing to stop you buying loads of domain names and pointing them at one website except cost.

lastly you can make a short url by going to t i n y u r l.com.  you type in your shiny new url, and it gives you a short url. like t i n y u r l.com/jh36and6f  You can use that in twitter

If you have printed matter about your website consider putting a qr code on the printed stuff. http://www.qrstuff.com/ will let you make one for free that you can print. (QR code is those square barcodes)

Nominet - which is the UK comain name registry - will ask you for contact details. this is public data you can see with whois enquiry.  so think what data you want in public view.  I just ignored them.

you can do all this for £7.50

other domain name providers exist.

BTW make a note when it expires.  you need to renew and someone else may buy it.  so be on the ball there.  but lcn do send an email but remember to change your account if you change your email.

Thanks, CP!

Oddly I knew about tiny and QR but not much else.

It never occurred to me all the millions of sites of any kind involved people paying for them.

I will investigate.

In the end (or perhaps just a first attempt), I filled in the gaps on the escortgirlsfiles site.

All i wanted without the lady involved able to contribute (smashed her laptop in anger at AW mistreating her again) was to get a presence online.

It can be tinkered with by the lady when she can, it is very basic but it didn't involve any cost at all, including url, and for establishing and expanding her visibility outside Aw it is good enough for now.

Can't help her joining the Pnet directory as I would be using my PC to be another person and I am not going there...

Thanks for all the help - told me lots of things and enabled me to take a few tentative steps forward.
