Is Bt Broadband Upgrade Worth It?

9 posts in this topic

I had a call from BT asking if I want to upgrade my router and line to BT Ultimate - or something like that - as an engineer visit was required I said no as I dont want one messing in my house.

But has anyone had this upgrade and did it make a difference? It seems to be that when you tube sticks (rarely happens )- it is not due to download speeds - but too many people plugged into youtube - so a faster line wouldnt make any difference.

As i dont watch films or download anything it would probably be a waste of time for me and I am satisfied with my speeds anyway.

Answered your own question there really; I do find the extra speed of BT Infinity very useful, as I am quite often downloading large files (not porn!). 1GB takes about a minute. We can now also watch iPlayer or other streaming services with no glitching, in fact it is now better for us than Freeview reception (very variable) or rented DVDs that are often scratched.

I got BT Infinity for the sport when that started. The first night it wouldn't work and when it did it would usually break down.

Then found I could watch BT, Sky etc on streaming sites and never used BT Sport itself again.

But with Infinity don't seem to get many glitches, just sometimes on the streaming.

YouTube always fine for me. I spent much of July watching tribute concerts on it by other artists in USA for top bands/artists like Led Zeppelin and Bruce Springsteen. Towards end of month got a warning I was nearly up to my limit so it is only Infinity up to a point....

Problems can depend how near your house is to the junction box where the fibre optic ends. The installer for me was a sub contractor and didn't have the cabling was told he would have to avoid the lead having to go across the hall under a carpet...

Also have Infinity + the latest BT Router.

My experience very positive, connections and speed (up and down) very good.

Can watch Sky via the internet on mobile devices and the latest WiFi TV's, would not go back to normal broadband now.

Only issue with Infinity is that you need a box that plugs into your telephone incoming cable, then a seperate cable to the Router, BT generally leave these together wherever your incoming cable is. If you need your router elsewhere in the house eg by a TV or PC then you have to run a seperate cable yourself

that is part of the reason we cancelled - did not want an engineer coming into the house and pissing about with the cabling etc - our bt homehub is fine - we watch youtube sometimes and it seems ok - or we can live with the occasional glitch

I got the upgrade 18 months ago. One thing you need to realise is the speed quoted is the speed to the router - if you wifi or use homeplugs you can experience a significant loss. I upgraded all my equipment and it was still slow at my machine. Three months into the new service I started experiencing random drop outs, this was at the router and effected both wireless and wired(ethernet cable) connections. I spent 12 months trying to get it fixed, eliminating interference from other electronics and gadgets, replacing router several times, 3 engineer visits and still no joy(there's nothing I haven't tried). In the end I gave up and now just cope with it, it can cut out at any time, for anything between 30 seconds and ten minutes, nothing I do seems to reconnect it and I just wait for it to get going again.

I have heard of other customers having issues but also have a friend in a different (and more remote) town who had the same upgrade without any problems.

One thing I have discovered are the homeplug wifi hotspots, just bought two this week and they are amazing. Their signal is actually stronger than the router at the main socket! If you have thick walls or a large property then I can't recommend these enough (they don't however stop the drop outs!)

You might be suffering from the dreaded REIN interference ?

If you suspect this, tune a MW radio to 612KHz and you will hear a loud hum over the background static, which will stop immediately if you unplug the offending device.

Suspecting this I asked the visiting engineer to run a REINS check, which he did on the last and final visit and found nothing.

This is one reason why I decided to cancel

our existing BB works fine

my o/h would kill me if I get a new service in and it stalls
