they have left out 'say they' after people.

its what people say they do, not what they actually do.

not the same thing.

The corrected versions of the items in bold above:

  • 22% of British men admit they have visited a prostitute. The actual number is probably more like 80%.
  • Men aged 25-34 more readily admit they use prostitutes as they are less likely to be in committed relationships or married, as well as less likely to feel bound by outdated social mores. In fact, use of prostitutes is most common in the 40-60 age bracket.

Agree? Disagree?

I doubt it's as high as 80% but wouldn't be surprised if it was somewhere closer to 50%.

I'd agree on the age bracket, at a guess I'd say the average punter's age would be somewhere around the 48-52 mark...

All guesswork on my part really based on stuff I've read on forums etc., but in all honesty we're never likely to know for sure...

I guess the ladies on here would be able to give us the best idea.

I have noticed more younger clients coming to see me now probably thanks to alot of the tv shows that have been on lately it seems to be more socially acceptable to see wgs. However I would say its more the 40 to 65 age bracket that come to see me.

For the record, I'm not making any statement about the accuracy or phrasing of this survey.

The age range suggested by the article definitely doesn't match up with the users of this site or the impression I get from ladies I've visited, nor the stereotypical perception of the clientele of escorts.

I considered 22% to be quite a high proportion of men having admitted to visiting a prostitute, and supposedly it was conducted anonymously using an online survey tool - but either way it is totally impossible to ever get accurate statistics regarding this question.

Absolutely agree, Secret Diary of a Call Girl was on television in my late teens and I certainly would never have considered visiting an escort if I hadn't watched it - I suppose it generally made it seem a lot safer and less taboo.

I'd actually be surprised if more than one-third of British men had ever been to a prostitute, although I'm guessing in the Ryanair era of cheap flights and stag dos in e.g. Prague and Amsterdam more younger guys might have done so once.

Agree about the age being dodgy though - I'd say 45-55 is the most common, and many older than that. It always makes me laugh that punters complain about escorts lying about their age (though I'm sure plenty do), because in my own experience, most of them over 50 do too!

There are lies, damned lies and statistics surveys.  I think you would get a different answer to such a survey if the questions had included 'in the UK', especially about the age range. LSS in Edinburgh is the only place I have been to with more than one or two of the men visiting at the same time being under 30.

I have noticed a strange attitude among many guys. Many happily admit to paying for sex while abroad (laddish larks, they say) but to do so in this country is 'sad'. Can't say I fully understand that one but I'd like to know if the 'have you paid for sex' question referred to 'in this country only' or 'at all'.

With regards to the third statistic - prostitution is already legal

I'd say it's mainly guys over 40 for various reasons -  more disposable income ,  more time, wife has become disinterested in sex, ability or inclination to 'pull' rapidly declining, need for sex but status-quo of lifestyle otherwise ok   etc etc.

Indeed the percentage is closer to 75-80% and men aged 25-34 will admit to this.  The majority of men that see escorts though are between 35-55, followed by 55-65 years old and then 22-35.  It would have been interesting to learn about their background though and percentage they represent.  Would be a shocker for some establishments.

I should expect the reason for the 'decline' in sexual activity is because people are too busy, researching, writing and talking about it.

In the Observer survey 69% of men said they thought prostitution should be "legalised". I agree that, since 22% of British men admitted they had visited a prostitute, the percentage who have actually visited is almost certainly higher than that, but I doubt it would be higher than the 69% who thought it should be "legalised".

I'd describe myself as pretty straight morally but I have no issue at all about paying for sex. If the woman is willing what is the problem?

I've thought about it for years and if anything it is a relief to have finally had the bottle to step over the line. God bless the wonderful girls who take us on without judgement (hopefully) and we all have to eat don't we?

True and good for you for reaching the next level in brain development, ha ha

There are lots of guys out there who prefer to meet women under different circumstances and try to get them very drunk.  If she dares to say, 'hey, let's talk about this', they quickly say: 'what, you want money like an escort?'  Try telling them: 'no, I just want to meet you all the time and shag me whenever it suits you then go to your wife as if nothing happened'.  They will just look at you and then bitch around with their mates anyway.

You cannot win whatever you say so you learn to keep quiet.

Did the survey take the standpoint that prostitution is illegal in the UK? Prostitution in itself is legal. What is not legal is engaging in activities such as traffiking, pimping, running a brothel which are associated with prostitution

Maybe if guys in the UK were more aware of the legal status of prostitution then they wouldn't be so hung up about it as illustrated by the % of survey respondents who felt that prostitution should be "legalised" compared to the % admitting that they had visited a prostitute

What??? If I got that response to my chat-up lines, then the last thing I would do is run and tell my mates. Straight away I would be swapping phone numbers and taking her up on her offer

Its a strange old world <_<

If I had to get a girl drunk to have sex with me I wouldn't bother. Mind you if she was drunk already I might think about it! :D

I love the honesty of being with an escort and if she has a nice time and welcomes me back then that's way better than a 'free' shag with the chance of a trip to the pox clinic. The escort might even remember me too! :)

Regardless of the technicality of asking someone if they think something should be legalised that is already legal, what the question really means is that 'Its a grey area at the moment, would you like to see the status of it in society changed? It is this, or something like it, that the responders are saying yes to. For what its worth I think that 69% percent is a good indicator for user numbers.

No-one has mentioned the armed forces......
